James Diggle

James Diggle, CBE , FBA (born 1944) is a British classical scholar. He was Professor of Greek and Latin at the University of Cambridge between 1995 and 2011.

Early life and education

Born in 1944, Diggle was educated at St John’s College, Cambridge; he completed Part II of the Classical Tripos in 1965, and went on to complete his doctoral studies there; his PhD was awarded in 1969. [1]

Academic career

Diggle was appointed a research fellow at Queens' College, Cambridge, in 1966 and was elected to an official fellowship the following year. He was the college librarian from 1969 to 1977 and praelector from 1971 to 1973 and again from 1978 to 2015. [1] He was also an assistant lecturer in classics at the University (1970–75) and then lecturer until 1989, when he was appointed to a readership. [2] He was then Professor of Greek and Latin from 1995 until he retired in 2011. [1] Diggle also served as Public Orator between 1982 and 1993. [3]

He is editor of the Cambridge Greek Lexicon, published in 2021. [4] [5]

In 1985, Diggle was elected a Fellow of the British Academy, the United Kingdom's national academy for the humanities. [6] He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2022 New Year Honours for services to classical scholarship. [7]

Having taught at St Hugh's College, Oxford, the University of Reading, and Newnham College, Cambridge, she was Laurence Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Cambridge from 1951 to 1962.

Donald Andrew Frank Moore Russell, was a British classicist and academic. He was Professor of Classical Literature at the University of Oxford between 1985 and 1988, and a Fellow and tutor of classics at St John's College, Oxford, from 1948 to 1988: he was an Emeritus Professor and Emeritus Fellow. Russell died in February 2020 at the age of 99.

Sir Ian Archibald Richmond, was a British archaeologist and academic. He was Professor of the Archaeology of the Roman Empire at the University of Oxford. In addition, he was Director of the British School at Rome from 1930 to 1932, President of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies from 1958 to 1961, and Director of the Society of Antiquaries of London from 1959 to 1964.
