James Francis Barker (1872 – 10 December 1950) was the second president of the Rochester Athenæum and Mechanics Institute,succeeding Carleton B. Gibson,from 1916–1919. [1]
He was born in 1872 in Keokuk,Iowa, [2] the son of a railroad ticketing agent and a New Orleanian of Spanish and French extraction. [3] His ancestors on his father's side included 11 of the 15 families who settled Nantucket in 1659. [2] He graduated from Cornell University in 1893 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and spent another year studying Architecture at the graduate level. He briefly worked at D. H. Burnham &Company and Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. before switching to education,becoming Superintendent of the Manual Training Department at East Division High School in Milwaukee,Wisconsin in 1897. He left in 1904 to pursue similar positions at Grand Rapids High School and the Hackley School in Muskegon,Michigan. In 1906,he participated in the formation of East Technical High School in Cleveland,Ohio and served as its first principal.
He married the former Kate Spooner in 1897 and raised one daughter. After being widowed in the late 1930s,he married Josephine M. Edmonds,a home economics teacher and half sister of International House of New York founder Harry Edmonds, [4] in 1941.
He came to the Rochester Athenæum and Mechanics Institute after his predecessor resigned to continue his work in the war relief effort. He oversaw the Institute during World War I,but subsequently left to become Superintendent of Junior and Technical Education in the Rochester City School District. [5] : 115 He also served as general supervisor of evening,summer,and continuation programs for the District.
After he retired in 1936,he operated a photographic studio called "The Eagle's Wing" on Nantucket Island during the summer months. He named the studio after an island steamboat his grandfather had commanded on Nantucket Sound. He also pursued painting, [6] pottery,metal working,and cabinet making.
He died in his Rochester home at the age of 78 and is interred on Nantucket. [7]

Mechanics' institutes,also known as mechanics' institutions,sometimes simply known as institutes,and also called schools of arts,were educational establishments originally formed to provide adult education,particularly in technical subjects,to working men in Victorian-era Britain and its colonies. They were often funded by local industrialists on the grounds that they would ultimately benefit from having more knowledgeable and skilled employees. The mechanics' institutes often included libraries for the adult working class,and were said to provide them with an alternative pastime to gambling and drinking in pubs.
The National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) is the first and largest technological college in the world for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. As one of nine colleges within the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester,New York,NTID provides academic programs,access,ASL in-class interpreters and support services—including on-site audiological,speech-language,and cochlear implant support .As of fall quarter 2012,NTID encompasses just under 10% of RIT's enrollment,1259 students. Roughly 775 deaf and hard of hearing students are cross-registered into another RIT college's program with support from NTID.
The Frank Ritter Memorial Ice Arena,known colloquially as "The Ritter",is an arena on the campus of the Rochester Institute of Technology in Henrietta,a suburb of Rochester,New York,United States. The Kate Gleason College of Engineering (KGCOE) is the engineering college at the Rochester Institute of Technology. The college is home to all of RIT's engineering programs except for software engineering,which is part of the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences. Entering the 2023-24 academic year,the student body consisted of 2,947 students,with 400 graduate students. About 23% of the students were female.
Carleton Bartlett Gibson was a 19th–and 20th-century American industrial educator and university president. He notably served as the third president of Jacksonville State Normal School from 1886 until 1892;followed by serving as the first president of the Rochester Athenæum and Mechanics Institute from 1910 until 1916.

Mark Ellingson was the 5th president of the Rochester Institute of Technology,succeeding John A. Randall,from 1936–1969. During Ellingson's tenure in office from 1936 to 1969,enrollment in day and evening classes rose from 2,250 to 16,000. He also oversaw a major expansion of the RIT endowment;a 1937 merger with the Empire School of Printing;the 1944 renaming to "Rochester Institute of Technology";the planning,construction,and 1968 transfer to the current campus in Henrietta. He also spearheaded the drive to have RIT selected as the location for the National Technical Institute for the Deaf,which admitted its first students in 1968.

He has works in the collections of the Library of Congress,the Metropolitan Museum,the Albright-Knox Art Gallery,the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester,and Strong National Museum of Play. A founding member of the Print Club of Rochester,Havens designed its logo which is still in use.

The Tigers compete in the NCAA Division III and are members of the Liberty League for all sports except ice hockey,which competes in NCAA Division I.
