The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a private research university in Henrietta,New York,a suburb of Rochester. It was founded in 1829. It is one of only two institutes of technology in New York state,the other being the New York Institute of Technology.
Lenna is a standard test image used in the field of digital image processing,starting in 1973. It is a picture of the Swedish model Lena Forsén,shot by photographer Dwight Hooker and cropped from the centerfold of the November 1972 issue of Playboy magazine. The image has attracted controversy in recent years because of its subject matter,and many journals have deemed it inappropriate and discouraged its use,while others have banned it from publication outright. Forsén herself has called for it to be retired,saying "It's time I retired from tech."
The B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences is one of the largest colleges at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT),and is home to the institute's computing education and research facilities. Golisano College is home to RIT's computer science,cybersecurity,information sciences and technologies,and software engineering departments,as well as the Ph.D. program in computing and information sciences,and the School of Interactive Games &Media,home to the college's game design and development and interactive development programs. Golisano College is housed in a 125,000 square foot facility,opened in 2003 on RIT's campus in Rochester,New York.
Samarjit singh is king John G. Webster was an American electrical engineer and a founding pioneer in the field of biomedical engineering. In 2008,Professor Webster was awarded the University of Wisconsin,College of Engineering,Polygon Engineering Council Outstanding Instructor Award. In 2019,the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers awarded him its James H. Mulligan Jr. Educational Medal for his career contributions. Professor Webster died on March 29,2023.
The Kate Gleason College of Engineering (KGCOE) is the engineering college at the Rochester Institute of Technology. The college is home to all of RIT's engineering programs except for software engineering,which is part of the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences. Entering the 2023-24 academic year,the student body consisted of 2,947 students,with 400 graduate students. About 23% of the students were female.
T. Alan Hurwitz is an American educator who served as the tenth President of Gallaudet University from 2010 to 2015. He is the first person born deaf,and first Jew,to hold this position. Previously,he served as President of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf and Vice President and Dean of Rochester Institute of Technology. He served in a variety of other roles for most of NTID's 40-year history.
Pramod P. Khargonekar is the Vice Chancellor for Research and Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California,Irvine. An expert in control systems engineering,Dr. Khargonekar has served in a variety of administrative roles in academia and federal funding agencies. Most recently,he served as assistant director for Engineering at the National Science Foundation (2013–2016),and as deputy director for Technology at the Advanced Research Projects Agency –Energy. From 2001 through 2009 he was the Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Florida.
William Wallace Destler is an American university professor and administrator. In 2017 he retired after having served for exactly 10 years as the 9th president of the Rochester Institute of Technology. He held the position from July 1,2007,succeeding Albert J. Simone.
David G. Messerschmitt is an engineer and professor emeritus at the University of California,Berkeley in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences in the UC Berkeley College of Engineering. He retired from UC Berkeley in 2005. At present he is conducting research at Berkeley,is a visiting professor in the Software Business Laboratory at the Helsinki University of Technology,and is doing research on interstellar communications at the SETI Institute. Messerschmitt also serves on the Advisory Council of METI International.
Martin Vetterli is a professor of engineering of École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland,and was the former president of EPFL between 2017 and 2024. He was also formerly the president of the National Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation.
Anastasios (Tas) Venetsanopoulos was a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Toronto Metropolitan University in Toronto,Ontario and a professor emeritus with the Edward S. Rogers Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto. In October 2006,Venetsanopoulos joined what was then Ryerson University and served as the founding vice-president of research and innovation. His portfolio included oversight of the university's international activities,research ethics,Office of Research Services,and Office of Innovation and Commercialization. He retired from that position in 2010,but remained a distinguished advisor to the role. Tas Venetsanopoulos continued to actively supervise his research group at the University of Toronto,and was a highly sought-after consultant throughout his career.
S. Shankar Sastry is the founding chancellor of the Plaksha University,Mohali and a former Dean of Engineering at University of California,Berkeley.
Leah H. Jamieson is an American engineering educator,currently the Ransburg Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University. Jamieson was a co-founder of the Engineering Projects in Community Service program (EPICS),a multi-university engineering design program that operates in a service-learning context. She is a recipient of the Gordon Prize. From 2006-2017,she served as the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering at Purdue.
Alan Conrad Bovik is an American engineer,vision scientist,and educator. He is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin),where he holds the Cockrell Family Regents Endowed Chair in the Cockrell School of Engineering and is Director of the Laboratory for Image and Video Engineering (LIVE). He is a faculty member in the UT-Austin Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering,the Machine Learning Laboratory,the Institute for Neuroscience,and the Wireless Networking and Communications Group.
David Albert Hodges (1937–2022) was an American electrical engineer,digital telephony pioneer,and professor of electrical engineering at the University of California,Berkeley.
Bernd Girod is a German-American engineer,the Robert L. and Audrey S. Hancock Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. Girod is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
Vishal Monga is an Indian American electrical engineer,researcher and academic. He is a professor of Electrical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University.
Ramalingam "Rama" Chellappa is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor,who works at Johns Hopkins University. At Johns Hopkins University,he is a member of the Center for Language and Speech Processing,the Center for Imaging Science,the Institute for Assured Autonomy,and the Mathematical Institute for Data Sciences. He joined Johns Hopkins University after 29 years at The University of Maryland. Before that,he was an assistant,associate professor,and later,director,of the University of Southern California's Signal and Image Processing institute.
William H. Sanders is currently Carnegie Mellon University's dean of engineering. On July 1,2025,Bill Sanders is set to become Rochester Institute of Technology's new president,and will be the successor to current RIT president David Munson.
