Jeju Strait is a strait between the Korean Peninsula (South Jeolla Province) and Jeju Island (Jeju Province). The strait is the boundary between the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea as defined by the International Hydrographic Organization, and is considered part of the East China Sea in Korea.
The Kuroshio current,a north-flowing ocean current, results in warm water all year round. [1]
South Korea is located in East Asia,on the southern portion of the Korean Peninsula located out from the far east of the Asian landmass. The only country with a land border to South Korea is North Korea, lying to the north with 238 kilometres (148 mi) of the border running along the Korean Demilitarized Zone. South Korea is mostly surrounded by water and has 2,413 kilometres (1,499 mi) of coast line along three seas;to the west is the Yellow Sea,to the south is the East China Sea,and to the east is the Sea of Japan. Geographically,South Korea's landmass is approximately 100,032 square kilometres (38,623 sq mi). 290 square kilometres (110 sq mi) of South Korea are occupied by water. The approximate coordinates are 37°North,128°East.
The Yellow Sea,also known as North Sea,is a marginal sea of the Western Pacific Ocean located between mainland China and the Korean Peninsula, and can be considered the northwestern part of the East China Sea.
The Sea of Japan
is the marginal sea between the Japanese archipelago,Sakhalin, the Korean Peninsula, and the mainland of the Russian Far East. The Japanese archipelago separates the sea from the Pacific Ocean. Like the Mediterranean Sea,it has almost no tides due to its nearly complete enclosure from the Pacific Ocean. This isolation also affects faunal diversity and salinity, both of which are lower than in the open ocean. The sea has no large islands, bays or capes. Its water balance is mostly determined by the inflow and outflow through the straits connecting it to the neighboring seas and the Pacific Ocean. Few rivers discharge into the sea and their total contribution to the water exchange is within 1%.The Luzon Strait is the strait between Luzon and Taiwan. The strait thereby connects the Philippine Sea to the South China Sea in the western Pacific Ocean.
The East China Sea is a marginal sea of the Western Pacific Ocean, located directly offshore from East China. China names the body of water along its eastern coast as "East Sea" due to direction, the name of "East China Sea" is otherwise designated as a formal name by International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and used internationally.
A dispute exists over the international name for the body of water which is bordered by Japan,Korea and Russia. In 1992,objections to the name Sea of Japan were first raised by North Korea and South Korea at the Sixth United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names. The Japanese government supports the exclusive use of the name "Sea of Japan",while South Korea supports the alternative name "East Sea",and North Korea supports the name "Korean East Sea". Currently, most international maps and documents use either the name Sea of Japan by itself,or include both the name Sea of Japan and East Sea,often with East Sea listed in parentheses or otherwise marked as a secondary name. The International Hydrographic Organization, the governing body for the naming of bodies of water around the world,in 2012 decided it was still unable to revise the 1953 version of its publication S-23 –Limits of Oceans and Seas, which includes only the single name "Sea of Japan",to include "East Sea" together with "Sea of Japan".
Jeju Province, officially Jeju Special Self-Governing Province,is the southernmost province of South Korea, consisting of eight inhabited and 55 uninhabited islands, including Mara Island,Udo Island, the Chuja Archipelago, and the country's largest island,Jeju Island. The province is located in the Korea Strait, with the Korean Peninsula to the northwest,Japan to the east, and China to the west. The province has two cities:the capital Jeju City,on the northern half of the island and Seogwipo,on the southern half of the island. The island is home to the shield volcano Hallasan, the highest point in South Korea. Jeju and Korean are the official languages of the province, and the vast majority of residents are bilingual.
The Korea Strait is a sea passage in East Asia between Korea and Japan, connecting the East China Sea,the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan in the northwest Pacific Ocean. The strait is split by the Tsushima Island into the Western Channel and the Tsushima Strait or Eastern Channel. It is economically important,as many shipping lanes pass through the strait, and both Japan and Korea permit free passage through it. In ancient times, both Buddhism and Mongol invaders passed over the strait to reach Japan. More recently,it was the site of the Battle of Korea Strait in the Korean War. A tunnel running underneath the strait connecting Japan and Korea, the Japan–Korea Undersea Tunnel, has been proposed to connect the two countries.
South Jeolla Province, also known as Jeonnam,is a province in the Honam region,South Korea, and the southernmost province in mainland Korea. South Jeolla borders the provinces of North Jeolla to the north,South Gyeongsang to the northeast, and Jeju to the southwest in the Korea Strait.
Jeolla Province was one of the historical Eight Provinces of Korea during the Kingdom of Joseon in southwestern Korea. It consisted of the modern South Korean provinces of North Jeolla,South Jeolla and Gwangju Metropolitan City as well as Jeju Province. The provincial capital was Jeonju, the current capital of North Jeolla. The entire inland region was called Honam, which is still commonly used today.
Tsushima Strait or Eastern Channel is a channel of the Korea Strait, which lies between Korea and Japan, connecting the Sea of Japan, the Yellow Sea,and the East China Sea.
Jeju City is the capital of the Jeju Province in South Korea and the largest city on Jeju Island. The city is served by Jeju International Airport.
South Korea is made up of 22 first-tier administrative divisions:6 metropolitan cities,1 special city,1 special self-governing city, and 14 provinces, including three special self-governing provinces and five claimed by the ROK government. These are further subdivided into a variety of smaller entities, including cities, counties, districts, towns, townships, neighborhoods and villages.
Tsushima Island is an island of the Japanese archipelago situated in-between the Tsushima Strait and Korea Strait, approximately halfway between Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula. The main island of Tsushima, once a single island, was divided into two in 1671 by the Ōfunakoshiseto canal and into three in 1900 by the Manzekiseto canal. These canals were driven through isthmuses in the center of the island, forming "North Tsushima Island" (Kamino-shima) and "South Tsushima Island" (Shimono-shima). Tsushima also incorporates over 100 smaller islands, many tiny. The name Tsushima generally refers to all the islands of the Tsushima archipelago collectively. Administratively,Tsushima Island is in Nagasaki Prefecture.
Jeju Island is South Korea's largest island, covering an area of 1,833.2 km2 (707.8 sq mi),which is 1.83% of the total area of the country. Alongside outlying islands,it is part of Jeju Province.
Korea comprises the Korean Peninsula and 3,960 nearby islands. The peninsula is located in Northeast Asia, between China and Japan. To the northwest, the Amnok River separates Korea from China and to the northeast, the Duman River separates Korea from China and Russia. The Yellow Sea lies to the west, the East China Sea and Korea Strait to the south, and the Korean East Sea to the east. Notable islands include Jeju Island (Jejudo),Ulleung Island (Ulleungdo),and the Liancourt Rocks.
Haenyeo are female divers in the South Korean province of Jeju, whose livelihood consists of harvesting a variety of mollusks, seaweed, and other sea life from the ocean. Known for their independent spirit and determination, haenyeo are representative of the semi-matriarchal family structure of Jeju.
The Namhae,or Choson Namhae refers to the sea in the south of the Korean Peninsula in Korea. It generally refers to the sea between Jindo,Jeollanam-do in the west and Haeundae-gu,Busan in the east. In North Korea,is the region of ocean near Korea that is bounded by the southwestern part of the Sea of Japan and by the southeastern part of the Yellow Sea. The name is not known and used outside Korea.
