Joerg Peninsula ( 68°11′S65°10′W / 68.183°S 65.167°W ) is a rugged, mountainous peninsula, 22 nautical miles (41 km) long in a northeast–southwest direction and from 3 to 10 nautical miles (6 to 19 km) wide, lying between Trail Inlet and Solberg Inlet on the Bowman Coast of Graham Land, Antarctica. Its tip is indented by Hondius Inlet. The peninsula lies in the area explored from the air by Sir Hubert Wilkins in 1928 and Lincoln Ellsworth in 1935, and its south coast was mapped by W.L.G. Joerg from air photographs taken by Ellsworth. It was further mapped and photographed from the air by the United States Antarctic Service in 1940, and was surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1947. The peninsula was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after W.L.G. Joerg (1885–1952), who was an American geographer, polar cartographer, and archivist, and who made important contributions to Antarctic cartography, nomenclature and history. Joerg was Chairman of the United States Board on Geographic Names Special Committee on Antarctic Names, 1943–47, and was a member of the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names, 1947–52. [1]
The Scaife Mountains is a group of mountains rising west of Prehn Peninsula and between the Ketchum Glacier and Ueda Glacier, at the base of the Antarctic Peninsula.
The Bermel Peninsula is a rugged, mountainous peninsula, approximately 15 nautical miles long and 7 nautical miles ) wide, between Solberg Inlet and Mobiloil Inlet on the Bowman Coast, Graham Land, Antarctica. The feature rises to 1,670 metres (5,480 ft) in Bowditch Crests and includes Yule Peak, Mount Wilson, Campbell Crest, Vesconte Point, Wilson Pass, Rock Pile Peaks, Miyoda Cliff, and Rock Pile Point.
Gardner Inlet is a large, ice-filled inlet at the southwest side of Bowman Peninsula, on the east coast of Palmer Land, Antarctica.
The Hollick-Kenyon Peninsula(68°35′S63°50′W) is an ice-covered spur from the main mountain mass of the Antarctic Peninsula. It projects over 40 nautical miles in a northeasterly arc from its base between Mobiloil Inlet and Casey Inlet.
Bowman Inlet is an ice-filled inlet between Kay Nunatak and Platt Point on the Hollick-Kenyon Peninsula, on the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Carroll Inlet is an inlet, 40 nautical miles long and 6 nautical miles wide, trending southeast along the coast of Ellsworth Land, Antarctica, between the Rydberg Peninsula and Smyley Island. The head of the inlet is divided into two arms by the presence of Case Island and is bounded to the east by Stange Ice Shelf.
Casey Inlet is an ice-filled inlet at the terminus of Casey Glacier, between Miller Point and Cape Walcott, on the east coast of Palmer Land, Antarctica.
Neptune Glacier is a glacier on the east coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica, 12 nautical miles (22 km) long and 4 nautical miles (7 km) wide, flowing east into George VI Sound and the George VI Ice Shelf to the south of Triton Point. Although Neptune Glacier is not located within the mountain range Planet Heights, the glaciers name derives from the mountain range along with many other nearby glaciers named after planets of the Solar System. There are also other nearby landforms named in association with these glaciers. The glacier was first sighted from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth on November 23, 1935, and roughly mapped from photos obtained on that flight by W.L.G. Joerg. The mouth of the glacier was positioned in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE). Named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for the planet Neptune following a Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) survey in 1949. The head of the glacier was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, by Searle of the FIDS in 1960.
Curran Bluff is a bluff, 2 nautical miles (4 km) long, forming a part of the south coast of Joerg Peninsula, Bowman Coast, south of Reichle Mesa. The bluff rises to 910 metres (3,000 ft) at the west end and is the most prominent feature on the north side of Solberg Inlet. It was photographed from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth, 21 November 1935, and was mapped from these photographs by W.L.G. Joerg. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Martin P. Curran, a member of the Pine Island Bay reconnaissance survey in USCGC Burton Island, 1974–75, and Project Manager, RV Hero – Palmer Station Research System, 1976.
Jupiter Glacier is a glacier on the east coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica, 10 nautical miles (19 km) long and 5 nautical miles (9 km) wide at its mouth, which flows east into George VI Sound to the south of Ablation Valley. It was first photographed from the air on November 23, 1935, by Lincoln Ellsworth and mapped from these photos by W.L.G. Joerg. It was roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition, and was named for the planet Jupiter by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey following their surveys in 1948 and 1949.
Transition Glacier is a glacier extending along the east coast of Alexander Island, 8 nautical miles (15 km) long and 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) wide, which flows east into the George VI Ice Shelf that occupies George VI Sound along the north side of Block Mountain and Tilt Rock. The glacier was first photographed from the air on November 23, 1935, by Lincoln Ellsworth and mapped from these photos by W.L.G. Joerg. Surveyed in 1949 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, and so named by them because this glacier marks the transition between igneous rocks to the north and sedimentary rocks to the south.
Trench Glacier is a deeply entrenched glacier extending along the east coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica, 6 nautical miles (11 km) long and 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) wide, which flows east into the George VI Ice Shelf that occupies George VI Sound immediately south of Mount Athelstan. The mouth of this glacier was first photographed from the air on November 23, 1935, by Lincoln Ellsworth, and it was mapped from these photos by W.L.G. Joerg. Trench Glacier was surveyed in 1948 and 1949 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, who applied this descriptive name.
Pluto Glacier is a glacier on the east coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica, 10 nautical miles (18 km) long and 4 nautical miles (7 km) wide, which flows east into George VI Sound to the north of Succession Cliffs. Although Pluto Glacier is not located within nearby Planet Heights, the glacier was named in association with the mountain range along with many other nearby glaciers that are named after planets of the Solar System. The glacier was first photographed from the air on November 23, 1935, by Lincoln Ellsworth and mapped from these photos by W.L.G. Joerg. Roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE). Named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Pluto, then considered the ninth planet of the Solar System, following Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) surveys in 1948 and 1949.
Mobiloil Inlet is an ice-filled inlet, nurtured by several northeast and east flowing glaciers, lying between the Rock Pile Peaks and Hollick-Kenyon Peninsula along the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.
The Mahalak Bluffs are a discontinuous line of bluffs, 2 nautical miles (4 km) long, on the north side of Solberg Inlet, Bowman Coast, Antarctica. The bluffs rise to about 500 metres (1,600 ft), east of Robillard Glacier, forming part of the southwest coast of Joerg Peninsula. The feature was photographed from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth, 21 November 1935, and was mapped from these photographs by W.L.G. Joerg. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1977 for Lieutenant Lawrence W. Mahalak, Jr., U.S. Navy, Medical Officer at Palmer Station for Operation Deep Freeze, 1971.
Saturn Glacier is a glacier lying in southeast Alexander Island, Antarctica. The glacier is 15 nautical miles (28 km) long and 6 nautical miles (11 km) wide, flowing southeast into the George VI Ice Shelf of George VI Sound north of Corner Cliffs. Although the glacier is not situated within Planet Heights, its name derives from the nearby mountain range along with many other glaciers named after planets of the Solar System. The nunataks at the head of the glacier are also named after solar system features, for example the Enceladus Nunataks named for a moon of Saturn. The coast in this vicinity was first seen from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth on November 23, 1935, and roughly mapped from photos obtained on that flight by W.L.G. Joerg. The glacier was surveyed in 1949 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) and named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for the planet Saturn, the sixth planet of the Solar System.
Stefansson Strait is an ice-filled strait 35 nautical miles long and 3 to 10 nautical miles wide, between the east coast of Palmer Land and Hearst Island, Antarctica.
The Smith Peninsula is an ice-covered, "dog-legged" peninsula 25 nautical miles long and 10 nautical miles wide, extending in an easterly direction between Keller Inlet and Nantucket Inlet from the east coast of Palmer Land, Antarctica.
Venus Glacier is a glacier on the east coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica, 10 nautical miles (18 km) long and 6 nautical miles (11 km) wide at its mouth flowing east into George VI Sound lying between Keystone Cliffs and Triton Point. The coast in this vicinity was first seen from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth on November 23, 1935 and roughly mapped from photos obtained on that flight by W.L.G. Joerg. The glacier was first surveyed in 1949 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey and named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee for the planet Venus, the second planet of the Solar System.
Rowe Bluff is a bluff rising to 1,200 m on the north side of Trail Inlet, Bowman Coast, 5 nautical miles (9 km) northeast of Williamson Bluff. The bluff was photographed from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth, November 21, 1935, and was mapped from these photographs by W.L.G. Joerg. It appears in subsequent American photographs from United States Antarctic Service (USAS), 1940, and was surveyed by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), 1946–48. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) in 1977 for Lieutenant Commander Gary L. Rowe, USCG, Engineer Officer on USCGC Burton Island, U.S. Navy Operation Deep Freeze, 1975.
