Jorge Dubcovsky is a plant geneticist and biologist at the University of California,Davis. He is an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. [2] Dubcovsky's research focuses on wheat genomics. [3] In 2013,he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. [3] In 2014,Dubcovsky won the Wolf Prize in Agriculture alongside Leif Andersson. [2]
Dubcovsky graduated from the University of Buenos Aires in 1984 with a degree in biological sciences. [3] He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Buenos Aires and began studying wheat genetics at the University of California,Davis in 1992. [3] In 2004,research led by Dubcovsky culminated in the identification and cloning of the VRN2 gene in winter wheat. [4]
Trofim Denisovich Lysenko was a Soviet agronomist and pseudo-scientist. He was a strong proponent of Lamarckism, and rejected Mendelian genetics in favour of his own idiosyncratic, pseudoscientific ideas later termed Lysenkoism.
George Wells Beadle was an American geneticist. In 1958 he shared one-half of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Edward Tatum for their discovery of the role of genes in regulating biochemical events within cells. He also served as the 7th President of the University of Chicago.
Mary Frances Lyon was an English geneticist best known for her discovery of X-chromosome inactivation,an important biological phenomenon.
Don Grierson is a British geneticist, and Emeritus Professor at University of Nottingham.
Susan Randi Wessler,ForMemRS,is an American plant molecular biologist and geneticist. She is Distinguished Professor of Genetics at the University of California,Riverside (UCR).
Sir David Charles Baulcombe is a British plant scientist and geneticist. As of 2017 he is a Royal Society Research Professor. From 2007 to 2020 he was Regius Professor of Botany in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Cambridge.
Shang Fa Yang was a Taiwanese-American botanist. He was a professor at the University of California,Davis. He was awarded the 1991 Wolf Prize in Agriculture and was elected a member of the US National Academy of Sciences the year before.
Dame Caroline Dean is a British plant scientist working at the John Innes Centre. She is focused on understanding the molecular controls used by plants to seasonally judge when to flower. She is specifically interested in vernalisation —the acceleration of flowering in plants by exposure to periods of prolonged cold. She has also been on the Life Sciences jury for the Infosys Prize from 2018.
Joachim Wilhelm "Jo" Messing was a German-American biologist who was a professor of molecular biology and the fourth director of the Waksman Institute of Microbiology at Rutgers University.
Sir Ralph Riley was a British geneticist.
Gurdev Singh Khush is an Agronomist and Geneticist who, along with mentor Henry Beachell, received the 1996 World Food Prize for his achievements in enlarging and improving the global supply of rice during a time of exponential population growth.
Pamela Christine Ronald is an American plant pathologist and geneticist. She is a professor in the Department of Plant Pathology and the Genome Center at the University of California,Davis and a member of the Innovative Genomics Institute at the University of California,Berkeley. She also serves as Director of Grass Genetics at the Joint BioEnergy Institute in Emeryville,California. In 2018 she served as a visiting professor at Stanford University in the Center on Food Security and the Environment.
Robert Anthony Martienssen is a British plant biologist,Howard Hughes Medical Institute–Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation investigator, and professor at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory,US.
Leif Andersson is a Swedish animal geneticist and professor of functional genomics at Uppsala University. In 2014,he won the Wolf Prize in Agriculture alongside Jorge Dubcovsky. He was inducted into the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 2002 and is a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences. He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 2017.
Linda J. Saif is an American microbial scientist who works at Ohio State University. In 2015,she became the first female recipient of the Wolf Prize in Agriculture for her research in virology and immunology.
Catherine Feuillet is a French geneticist who is currently the Chief Scientific Officer of Inari Agriculture,a Cambridge MA based biotechnology company. Feuillet earned a PhD in plant molecular biology on the isolation and characterization of genes involved in wood formation in eucalyptus trees. She started to work on the genetics of disease resistance in wheat in 1994 during her post-doctoral studies at the Swiss Federal Institute for Agroecology. She then moved as a junior group leader to the University of Zurich where she investigated the molecular basis of fungal disease resistance in wheat and in barley and cloned the first leaf rust resistance gene from wheat. In 2004 she was hired as a research director at the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) in France to lead European and international projects on wheat genomics.
George Frederick Sprague was an American geneticist and maize researcher. He was a faculty member at the Iowa State University and the University of Illinois and a researcher at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He is credited with developing a genetically strong line of maize known as Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic. A recipient of the Wolf Prize in Agriculture,Sprague was also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
Sushil Kumar was an Indian geneticist and academic, known for his Plant and microbial genetical genomics, especially the studies on Escherichia coli and Lambda phage as well as on the mutants of Rhizobium. He was a former director of the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy,National Academy of Agricultural Sciences,National Academy of Sciences,India, and Indian Academy of Sciences.
