Jozef Chovanec (born 7 March 1960) [1] is a former professional footballer and manager. He took part in two major tournaments: the 1990 FIFA World Cup as a player for Czechoslovakia and UEFA Euro 2000 as manager of the Czech Republic.
As a footballer, Chovanec spent most of his career at Sparta Prague. [2] He moved to the Netherlands to play briefly for PSV Eindhoven in 1998. At international level, Chovanec represented Czechoslovakia 52 times, scoring four goals, and played at the 1990 FIFA World Cup. [3]
Chovanec coached Sparta Prague, with his first match as Sparta manager being on 6 September 1996, Sparta were bottom of the league after seven games but Chovanec oversaw a turnaround, culminating in Sparta winning the league title the same season. He stayed in his role until December 1997, [4] before leaving to become manager of the Czech Republic in 1998. The team qualified to the UEFA Euro 2000 through corresponding qualification with a perfect record of ten wins from ten matches to reach UEFA Euro 2000. [5] Chovanec did not lead the team to 2002 FIFA World Cup, being eliminated by Belgium in a play-off at the end of qualifying. [6] He resigned from his position in November 2001 having failed to qualify for the World Cup. His final record as Czech national team manager was 27 wins, seven draws, and 11 losses from 45 matches. Chovanec briefly led Sparta in May 2008 for the final league game of the 2007–08 season as well as the cup final, which he won. In October 2008, Chovanec returned to Sparta Prague for his third spell as manager, going on to finish the 2008–09 season in second place. [4] He parted from the club in December 2011. He was appointed head coach of UAE Pro-League side Baniyas SC on a one-year contract on 19 June 2012. [8] In March 2014, he became manager of Ružomberok of the Slovak First Football League until the end of the 2013–14 season. [9]
Chovanec was born in Dolné Kočkovce near Púchov. [10] He was married to a woman named Jitka, who died at only 53 years old in 2018. [10] They had two daughters and four grandchildren. [11]
Štěpán Vachoušek is a Czech former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He spent most of his career playing for FK Teplice, but also spent time abroad playing for clubs in France and Austria. He played internationally for the Czech Republic at youth and full level, winning the 2002 UEFA European Under-21 Championship with the under-21 team before making his way to the full team, for whom he played 23 times between 2002 and 2006, including at Euro 2004. He is a skillful left-wingback or playmaker.
Martin Frýdek is a Czech football coach and former player who played as midfielder. In a seven-year international career he made a combined total of 37 appearances for the national teams of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. As a player he won five national titles with Sparta Prague in the 1990s before moving to Germany, where he spent two seasons before returning to the Czech Republic, where he finished his top-flight career in 2001. He later became a football coach. He last managed Czech Fourth Division club Český Brod.
Edvard Lasota is a Czech former football player who played mostly as a midfielder. Spending most of his career in the Czech leagues, he had short spells in Italy with AC Reggiana and Salernitana. He also played for the Czech Republic, earning 15 caps and two goals.
Michal Bílek is a football manager and former player. He led the Czech Republic national football team for four years between 2009 and 2013. As a player, he represented Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic at international level. His playing position was right midfielder.
Milan Kerbr is a Czech former professional footballer who played as a forward for the Czech Republic, for whom he was part of the squad UEFA Euro 1996. Awards for young player, coach and Czech First League personality of the year are also awarded. The award was first presented in 1965, as an award for the whole of Czechoslovakia. It was won by Ján Popluhár.
The Czech Women's First League, known as the FORTUNA=LIGA for sponsorship reasons, is the top level women's football league of the Czech Republic. The league is dominated by teams of Prague. Slavia Prague won the last championships, Sparta Prague was runner-up. The winning team and runners-up of the league qualifies for the UEFA Women's Champions League.

Radim Holub is a Czech former football player. He played more than 300 games in the Czech First League for various clubs including Jablonec, Hradec Králové, Sparta Prague, Mladá Boleslav and Drnovice. He won the 2000–01 Czech First League with Sparta Prague.
Martin Barbarič was a Czech football player who made 135 top flight appearances across the end of the Czechoslovak First League and start of the Czech First League for Dukla Prague, Svit Zlín, Slovan Liberec, and Hradec Králové between 1991 and 2002. He was also a U-11 coach at FC Hradec Králové.
Miloslav Penner was a Czech football defender. He made over 200 appearances in the Czech First League. Penner was known for his unusual hairstyles.
Petr Kostelník is a former football goalkeeper who represented the Czechoslovakia national football team, making three appearances. He played club football in Prague for Sparta and Dukla. He also played for Lázně Bohdaneč. In the Czech First League, Kostelník played for Sparta, Bohdaneč, and Žižkov. In the 1980s he made 12 appearances for Czechoslovakia U21, playing club football for Dukla Prague in the Czechoslovak First League between 1984 and 1992.
Michal Šmarda is a Czech former football midfielder and current coach. A midfielder, Šmarda played in the Czech First League on over 300 occasions, winning the competition with Sparta Prague in 1999.
Petr Vrabec is a Czech football manager and former player. He won six Czechoslovak First League titles with Sparta Prague at club level. Vrabec also represented Czechoslovakia, playing three times and scoring once in 1993.
David Langer is a Czech football manager and former player, who played as a midfielder. He started his career with SK Uničov, where he played from 1997 to 1999. Langer played for FC Slovan Liberec in the Czech First League between 2000 and 2004, winning the national title in the 2001–02 season. He joined Mladá Boleslav in January 2005, before signing a two-year contract with Greek side Panionios ahead of the 2005–06 season. He then returned to the Czech Republic, signing for TJ Tatran Jakubčovice of the second league ahead of the 2006–07 season.
