Judith Peck is an American artist (born 1957 in Brooklyn, New York) currently residing in the Greater Washington, D.C. area who is predominantly known for her allegorical figurative oil paintings.
Peck was born in 1957 in Brooklyn, New York. [1] [2] She studied art at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., [2] [3] and received a BFA in 1979.
Judith Peck was described by Professional Artist magazine as an "allegorical figurative artist who has made her life’s work to paint about history and healing, using a variety of methods and experimental techniques to achieve a diverse range of visual and tactile results that validate a strong narrative." [4]
Her paintings have been exhibited nationwide and internationally including at the Alexandria Museum of Art in Alexandria, Louisiana, the Masur Museum of Art in Monroe, Louisiana, the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Hagerstown, Maryland, the Koehnline Museum of Art, Des Plaines, Illinois, Fresno Art Museum, in Fresno, California, the Portsmouth Museum, in Portsmouth, Virginia, New Britain Museum of American Art, CT, Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, and others. Her artwork has also been selected for multiple awards, including the 2019 Best in Show at the Washington County Museum of Art exhibition, the 2018 Phil Desind Award during the Midyear Exhibition at the Butler Institute of American Art and the 2016 Best in Show award at the Pinnacle Exhibition at Florida A&M University Foster-Tanner Fine Arts Gallery. She has also been awarded a Strauss Fellowship Grant from Fairfax County, Virginia. [4] [5]
Her work has been described as "ethereal portrait paintings" by The Washington Post, [6] and in writing about her work Penn State News noted that "She portrays the broken yet beautiful human experience in her oil paintings." [2] In highlighting her work in a 1997 five person show at the Platt Gallery in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Times art critic noted that Peck's works in the show were "the most emotionally charged art here, portraying 'persecuted Jews from the diaspora.' In her paintings, Hebrew characters appear, like an omniscient force, atop portraits of melancholic faces. In 'Last Covenant,' the letters drip blood over the sunken-eyed face of a woman." [7]
In 2019, for her most recent show at The Gallery at the Pennsylvania College of Technology, [3] she stated that "I’m not painting the other, I’m painting everyone and we all live in the world together and we are responsible for everyone, each other..." [3] In 2021 she was one of the artists invited to The Phillips Collection's juried invitational, Inside Outside, Upside Down exhibition, a show that was described by The Washington City Paper art critic as forcing "us to remember a time that left us 'confused, battered, and disoriented' through the eyes of 64 D.C.-area artists." Lois Mailou Jones (1905–1998) was an artist and educator. Her work can be found in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Muscarelle Museum of Art, and The Phillips Collection. She is often associated with the Harlem Renaissance.
Daniel Garber was an American Impressionist landscape painter and member of the art colony at New Hope, Pennsylvania. He is best known today for his large impressionist scenes of the New Hope area, in which he often depicted the Delaware River. He also painted figurative interior works and excelled at etching. In addition to his painting career, Garber taught art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for over forty years.
The Washington Color School, also known as the Washington, D.C., Color School, was an art movement starting during the 1950s–1970s in Washington, D.C., in the United States, built of abstract expressionist artists. The movement emerged during a time when society, the arts, and people were changing quickly. The founders of this movement are Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland, however four more artists were part of the initial art exhibition in 1965.

Tim Okamura is a Japanese Canadian artist known for his contemporary realist portraits that combine graffiti and realism. His work has been on the cover of Time Magazine and has been featured in several major motion pictures. Lester Johnson was an American artist and educator. Johnson was a member of the Second Generation of the New York School during the late 1950s. The subject of much of his work is the human figure. His style is considered by critics and art historians to be in the figurative expressionist mode.
Judith E. Stein is a Philadelphia-based art historian and curator, whose academic career has focused on the postwar New York art world. She has written a biography of the art dealer Richard Bellamy, as well as feature articles regarding artists including Jo Baer, Red Grooms, Lester Johnson, Alfred Leslie and Jay Milder.
Judith Bernstein is a New York artist best known for her phallic drawings and paintings. Bernstein uses her art as a vehicle for her outspoken feminist and anti-war activism, provocatively drawing psychological links between the two. Her best-known work features her iconic motif of an anthropomorphized screw, which has become the basis for a number of allegories and visual puns. During the beginning of the Feminist Art Movement, Bernstein was a founding member of the all-women's cooperative A.I.R. Gallery in New York.

Judy Takács is a contemporary figurative painter, known for her realistic paintings from her ongoing, traveling portrait series, Chicks with Balls: Judy Takács paints unsung female heroes. “Takács is a figurative artist who tells stories about people who have something uplifting to share.” She is an elected member of, and past Social Media Chair for Allied Artists of America. She is past Social Media Chair and Literature Committee writer for the Cecilia Beaux Forum of the Portrait Society of America. In 2018, Takács was elected to membership in the Salmagundi Art Club and the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club in New York City. She holds Signature Status with Portrait Society of America, American Women Artists and Akron Society of Artists. She lives and works in Solon, Ohio.
Sidney Goodman was an American figurative painter and draftsman from Philadelphia, PA who explored the human form. Goodman received public notice in the early 1960s for his oil paintings, leading to his inclusion in the 1973 Whitney Biennial. In 1996, the Philadelphia Museum of Art presented a retrospective show of Goodman's paintings and drawings.
Chawky Frenn is a Lebanese-born American artist, author, and art professor. He currently teaches art at George Mason University in northern Virginia. His highly realistic paintings have strong narrative social and political elements. Frenn is a former Fulbright scholar, and currently resides in the Greater Washington, D.C. area.
Tanya Davis is an American artist predominantly known for her hyper-realistic representational watercolors which are often on the subject of reflections and transparency. She is a past President of the Torpedo Factory Artists' Association, one of the largest artists associations in the US. In 1999 she was selected as the Torpedo Factory Artist of the Year.
Allen Dester Carter, known as 'Big Al' Carter, was an Alexandria, Virginia artist and public school art teacher in Washington, D.C.
Joan Belmar is an American artist. He is a painter who uses a three dimensional technique using painting and collage processes with both painted and untreated Mylar/paper strips in circles and curvilinear shapes variations which then produced different and changes degrees of transparency, as light and the viewer move in relation to the work. He was a Washington, DC Mayor's Art Award Finalist in 2007 as an outstanding emerging artist. The DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities has also awarded him with an Artist Fellowship Program grant in 2009, and in 2011 he was awarded an Individual Artist Grant by the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, MD. He is a two-time recipient of the Maryland Arts Council Individual Artist Grant in Visual Arts: Painting, in 2010and 2013.
Linda Tracey Brandon is an American representational painter who paints portraits and the human figure in addition to creating works in other genres, such as still life and landscape.
