Lorenza Julia Álvarez Resano (10 August 1903 –19 May 1948) was a Spanish lawyer,teacher and politician. A member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party,she was a member of the Congress of Deputies of the Second Spanish Republic from 1936 to 1939. She was the first woman ever to assume the office of civil governor in Spain.
Born on 10 August 1903 in Villafranca,Navarre. [1] She earned a title in educational practice in the provincial capital Pamplona,later passing a public examination to the post of school teacher in 1923 in Zaragoza. [2] Initially close to the Radical Socialist Republican Party,she later joined the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). [3] She obtained a licentiate degree in Law at the University of Zaragoza in 1933. [1]
She married Amancio Muñoz Zafra ,also a lawyer and PSOE politician,in 1935. [1]
After unsuccessfully running as PSOE candidate at the 1933 election,she was elected as member of the Republican Cortes in the constituency of Madrid–province at the 1936 election. [3] In addition,she served as civil governor of the province of Ciudad Real during wartime (1937–1938). [4]
Exiled to France,she helped to organise the Spanish Refugee Evacuation Service (SERE) on behalf of Juan Negrín. [4] Adherent to the negrinista faction of the PSOE,fallen from grace after the end of the Civil War,she was expelled from the party in 1946 along Negrín and other followers. [5] She was to be symbolically reinstated as member of the PSOE in 2009. [5]
Ultimately exiled to Mexico in 1947,she died in Mexico City on 19 May 1948. [4]

He was President of the Council of Ministers of the Second Spanish Republic and the Spanish Republican government in exile between 1937 and 1945. He died in exile in Paris,France.

Women in the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party were few in number,mainly as a result of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE)'s resistance to women's rights. The party had opposed the women's rights movement,seeing it as a bourgeois endeavor that interfered with their ability to work for labor rights. Despite warnings from prominent women about the problems related to this position,they re-affirmed it several times in the period prior to the Dictatorship of Primo de Rivera.

The repression behind nationalist lines during the war and the immediate years that followed left many politically active women with few choices but to leave or face death. The exact totals of women who were murdered,fled or disappeared is unknown,as it was only possible to make estimates.
Women in PSOE in Francoist Spain had been involved in important socialist activism since the 1930s,including behind the scenes during the Asturian miners' strike of 1934,even as the party offered few leadership roles to women and address the issues of women. During the Civil War,the party was one of the few left wing actors to reject the idea of women on the front,believing women instead should take care of the home.
Women in Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT) in Francoist Spain played important roles in the union dating back to the Second Republic period,even as their specific needs like maternity leave,childcare provisions and equal pay were subverted for the improvement of better overall working conditions. Women UGT leaders in the Civil War period included María Lacrampe and Claudina García Perez.

The Government-in-exile of JoséGiral—also known by its supporters as el gobierno de la esperanza— was an executive branch created on 21 August 1945 by the institutions of the Second Spanish Republic in exile and headed by JoséGiral,the former prime minister during the first months of the Civil War. It tried to put up a united front before the United Nations and the international community with the aim of isolating General Francisco Franco's regime,as well as obtaining international recognition as the only legitimate government of Spain in order to reestablish the Republic.
