Krishna Balaji Sainis (born 2 October 1949) is an Indian immunologist. He is a former senior professor of Life Sciences at Homi Bhabha National Institute and an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India. Since 1999, he has served as the Indian representative on the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology for his contributions to medical sciences in 1994.

Born on 2 October 1949, K. B. Sainis earned a master's degree in biochemistry (MSc) from Savitribai Phule Pune University and did a one-year course in biology and radiobiology at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). [1] Upon completion of the course in 1972, he joined BARC as a Scientific Officer while continuing his doctoral studies at Pune University and secured a PhD in biophysics in 1980. Taking a sabbatical, he did his post-doctoral studies at the New England Medical Centre of Tufts University School of Medicine and, with the assistance of an IAEA fellowship, he completed his studies at University College London at its ICRF Tumor Immunology Unit. [2]

Returning to BARC, he served in many positions, heading the Immunology Section and the Cell Biology Division and serving as the associate director of the Bioscience Group. He became director of the Bio-Medical Group in 2006, with the responsibility of six divisions. [3] During his service at BARC, he has also been working as a faculty at the department of Life Sciences of the Homi Bhabha National Institute where he is a senior professor. [2]

Sainis is married to Jayashree Krishna Sainis, a biochemist, and the family lives in Navi Mumbai. [4]

Research

Sainis' studies in immunobiology have covered how T Cells and their receptors influence immune response to DNA in mycobacterial antigens and lupus nephritis, an autoimmune disease. [5] He headed a group of scientists at BARC who were involved in research on immunomodulators based on plants. [6] His studies have been documented and cited in texts and articles. [note 1] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] He has also written chapters in books published by others. [12] [13] [14]

Affiliations and memberships

Sainis has been associated with two international agencies. He served as president of the Standing Advisory Group on Nuclear Applications (SAGNA) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2012, and since 1999 has served as the Indian representative on the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation. Sainis is the president of the Mumbai Immunology Group at Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) of the Tata Memorial Centre [17] and a former vice president of the Maharashtra Academy of Sciences. [18] He is an honorary adviser to the Society for Free Radical Research India (SFRR-India); [19] [20] a member of the Advisory Committee of the National Training Program on Radiation Processing of Food for Food and Quarantine Inspectors & Quality Control Personnel organized by Department of Atomic Energy in association with BARC in February 2013; [21] and a member of the Indian Immunology Society. [22]

He was previously associated with ongoing education programs such as the XVII Training Workshop on Radiation Emergency Preparedness for Medical Officers, [23] the Refresher Course 2013 of the Indian Women Scientists Association, [24] and the AKRUTI Technology Package for Rural Deployment of BARC. [25] He has delivered several invited speeches or keynote addresses [26] [27] and is a reviewer for Hindawi journals. [28]

Awards and honors

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research awarded Sainis the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1994. [29] [30] The National Academy of Sciences, India elected him as a fellow in 2002. [31] He is also an elected fellow of the Maharashtra Academy of Sciences. [32]

He had also served as a DAE Homi Bhabha Chair Professor at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai. He was known as a great physical metallurgist.

Sachchida Nand Tripathi is an Indian scientist who works in the field of Atmospheric Sciences. He is a Higher Administrative Grade Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and also joint faculty at the Department of Sustainable Energy Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He currently holds the Arjun Dev Joneja Faculty Chair in the department. Council for Scientific and Industrial Research Government of India awarded him with Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for Science and Technology, the highest science award in India, for his outstanding contribution in the field of Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary sciences in 2014. Prof. Tripathi is an elected Fellow of major Sciences and Engineering academies of the country: Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Sciences, Indian National Academy of Engineering and also holds J. C. Bose Fellowship of Department of Science and Technology (India). He was awarded the Infosys Prize 2023 in Engineering and Computer Science for the deployment of large-scale sensor-based air quality network and mobile laboratory for hyper local measurements of pollution, data generation and analysis using AI+ML for effective air quality management and citizen awareness, and for the discovery of new pathways of aerosols formation and growth that provide mechanistic understanding of haze formation.

Dilip Devidas Bhawalkar is an Indian optical physicist and the founder director of the Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (CAT), an institute under the Department of Atomic Energy, serving as a centre for higher studies in the fields of lasers and particle accelerators. He is credited with pioneering research in optics and lasers in India and is reported to have contributed in making CAT a partner in the International Linear Collider and Large Hadron Collider experiments of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). He is a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the highest Indian award in science and technology. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri in 2000.

Prafullachandra Vishnu Sane is an Indian molecular biologist and plant physiologist, known for his pioneering studies on photosynthesis. He is a former director of National Botanical Research Institute and an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Sciences, India, National Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Maharashtra Academy of Sciences. Subhash Chandra Lakhotia is an Indian cytogeneticist, academic, Distinguished Professor of Zoology, and the Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB) Distinguished Fellow at the Banaras Hindu University. He is known for his pioneering research on Drosophila with regard to its chromosome organization and replication. A Raja Ramanna fellow of the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Atomic Energy, he is an elected fellow of all three major Indian science academies: Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Sciences, India. He is a Senior Fellow of the Cell Stress Society International (USA). Bhaskar Saha is an Indian immunologist, cell biologist and a senior scientist at National Centre for Cell Science, Pune. He is known for his contributions in the fields of immunology and cell signaling. He is an elected fellow of two of the major Indian science academies, National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 2009, for his contributions to biological sciences.

Sekharipuram Narayaniyer Seshadri (1937–1986) was an Indian control engineer and the head of the Reactor Control Division of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. He established the control systems for the Satellite Receiving Station at Arvi, near Pune and the Ooty Radio Telescope. Subsequent to the bombing of Air India Flight 182 in June 1985, he conducted the examination of the cockpit voice recorder and air traffic control tapes.

Satish Kumar Gupta is an Indian immunologist and an Emeritus Scientist at the National Institute of Immunology. Known for his research in reproductive immunology, Gupta is an elected fellow of all the three Indian science academies viz. Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian National Science Academy He is also a J. C. Bose Fellow of the Department of Biotechnology and an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. Sandip Basu is an Indian physician of Nuclear Medicine and the Head, Nuclear Medicine Academic Program at the Radiation Medicine Centre. He is also the Dean-Academic (Health-Sciences), BARC at Homi Bhabha National Institute and is known for his services and research in Nuclear Medicine, particularly on Positron emission tomography diagnostics and Targeted Radionuclide Therapy in Cancer. Virendra Singh is an Indian theoretical physicist and a former C. V. Raman chair professor and director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). Known for his research in high energy physics, Singh is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies - Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Sciences, India as well as The World Academy of Sciences. Nivrathi Suryanarayanashastry Satya Murthy was an Indian physicist and the head of the Nuclear Physics Division of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. Known for his research in molecular reaction dynamics, Murthy was an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to physical sciences in 1980.

Shyam Sunder Kapoor is an Indian nuclear physicist and a former director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. Kinshuk Dasgupta is an Indian research scientist at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. He also holds a professorship at the Homi Bhabha National Institute. He earned his Bachelor in Engineering from Jadavpur University in metallurgy and PhD from the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai in chemical engineering. His research expertise mainly includes work on carbon based nano materials and composite synthesis of the use of nano materials.
