Anil Kumar Mandal is an Indian ophthalmologist and a consultant at L. V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. Known for his research on glaucoma, Mandal is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to Medical Sciences in 2003. Anil K. Mandal was born in a village named Ghanashyambati, South 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal to Jayalaxmi and Manik Chandra Mandal.He did his primary education in Parvati FP School under guidance of his father who was Headmaster of the same school. His secondary education was in Bawali Higher Seconadry School. [2] He graduated in medicine in 1981 from Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital of the University of Calcutta and moved to Dr R.P. Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi from where he secured an MD in 1986. [3] Subsequently, he did his senior residency at Dr. R. P. Centre itself and earned a Diplomate of National Board from the National Board of Examinations in 1987. Later, he joined L. V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad where he is a consultant specializing in cataract, glaucoma and pediatric ophthalmology. [4] In between, he had two sabbaticals as a visiting research fellow at Kellogg Eye Centre, Michigan, and Doheny Eye Institute. [5] He also serves as a faculty of the Indian Association of Community Ophthalmology (INACO). [6]

Mandal has done extensive studies on glaucoma [7] and is credited with the development of an alternative surgical protocol for treating pediatric glaucoma. [8] He developed an integrated approach for treating glaucoma which incorporated choosing the right surgical method, preservation of residual vision, studying genetic aspects and imparting genetic counselling. His studies assisted in widening the understanding of glaucoma, particularly developmental glaucoma and pediatric glaucoma. His studies have been documented by way of over 75 articles [9] [note 2] and he also serves as a reviewer for the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology . [3]

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research awarded him Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, one of the highest Indian science awards in 2003, [10] making him the first ophthalmologist to receive the honor. [4] The National Academy of Medical Sciences elected him as a fellow in 2009. [11] He is also a recipient of the Medical Research Prize of the Indian Council of Medical Research (2000 ), Achievement Award of American Academy of Ophthalmology (2000) and Col. Rangachari Award of All India Ophthalmological Society (2003) and the award orations delivered by him include the 1977 Dr. P. Siva Reddy Gold Medal Oration of All India Ophthalmological Society. [3]

Ajit Kumar Basu (1912–1986) was an Indian cardiac surgeon. He was a recipient of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the highest Indian science award in 1967. He was honoured by the Government of India in 1970 with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award. He qualified for his FRCS in 1946. He was the first Indian to be appointed examiner of the Royal College and served as its Hunterian Professor.

Tiruchirappalli Chelvaraj Anand Kumar (1936–2010) was an Indian biologist and reproductive biologist and the creator of the second scientifically documented test tube baby in India. He was the founder of Hope Infertility Clinic, Bangalore and the director of the National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health. He was an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medical Sciences and a recipient of the Sanjay Gandhi National Award. Santosh Gajanan Honavar is an Indian ophthalmologist and is currently the editor of the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology and Indian Journal of Ophthalmology - Case Reports, the official journals of the All India Ophthalmological Society; Director, Medical Services ; Director, Department of Ocular Oncology and Oculoplasty at Centre for Sight, Hyderabad; and Director, National Retinoblastoma Foundation.

Ganesh Nagaraju is an Indian biochemist, geneticist, cancer biologist and a full professor at the Department of Biochemistry of the Indian Institute of Science. He has been studying DNA damage responses in mammalian cells, and mechanisms underlying chromosome instability genetic diseases and cancer. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, for his contributions to biosciences, in 2015. In 2018, Nagaraju received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in Biological Sciences from CSIR. This award is given in recognition of outstanding contributions to Science and Technology, and is considered one of the highest awards for science in India.

Swadhin Kumar Mandal is a Bengali Indian organometallic chemist and a professor at the department of chemical sciences of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata. Mandal, an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow, is known for his studies in the fields of catalysis, new drug development and material chemistry. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to chemical sciences in 2018.. In 2020, he was awarded the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award by Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Foundation, Germany in recognition of his outstanding research accomplishments. In 2022, he was awarded the Erna and Jakob Michael visiting professorship at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel.
