Mohan Rao Chintalagiri (born 19 January 1954, Huzurabad, Hyderabad State (now Telangana)) is an Indian molecular biologist renowned for his contributions to the fields of biophysics and molecular biology. [1] He has earned international recognition for his work on molecular chaperones as well as his contribution to the field of photoacoustic spectroscopy in health and disease. He is a former Director of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) and served as a CSIR-Distinguished Scientist. [2] He received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1999, the highest science honor in India. [3]

Early life and education

Ch. Mohan Rao pursued his academic journey at Osmania University, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in botany, zoology, and chemistry in 1975. Subsequently, in 1977, he completed his master's degree in chemistry from Osmania University PG Centre Warangal, presently known as Kakatiya University, Warangal. In 1984, he earned his PhD in chemistry from the University of Hyderabad, focussed on photoacoustic spectroscopy of chemical and biological systems. [4]

Career

Rao's distinguished career includes 30 years of service as a distinguished scientist and subsequently as the director of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology in Hyderabad, India, from 1984 to 2023. [5] Currently, he serves as a Senior Professor Emeritus at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, starting in 2024. [6] Throughout his career, he held prestigious positions globally, including visiting associate at the National Institutes of Health (1990–92), visiting professor at Tokyo Science University, Japan (1996), visiting professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch, and the Institute for Protein Research in Osaka University, Japan. Additionally, he served as an adjunct professor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Awards and honors

Rao's outstanding contributions to science have earned him numerous accolades. [7] [8]

In 1999, he was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, in the Medical Sciences category, the highest science award in India. Furthermore, he is an elected fellow of esteemed organizations such as the Indian National Science Academy, [9] National Academy of Sciences, India, Indian Academy of Sciences, and The World Academy of Sciences. [10] He was awarded honorary doctorate by the Kakatiya University and distinguished alumnus award by the University of Hyderabad.

Professional Affiliations

Beyond his research and academic achievements, Dr. Rao actively contributed to various scientific societies. He served as the President of the Society of Biological Chemists (India), Indian Biophysical Society, Andhra Pradesh Academy of Science, and the Telangana Academy of Sciences. [11] Additionally, he played a key role as an Executive Committee member for the Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics at Madurai Kamaraj University.

He was positioned as a Senior Scientist at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology in Hyderabad, India. He was awarded in June 2004 the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, the highest science award in India, in the Biological sciences category.

Jayaraman Gowrishankar is an Indian medical microbiologist. Gowrishankar received his M.B.B.S. degree from the Christian Medical College, Vellore. He holds Doctor of philosophy in bacterial genetics from the University of Melbourne.

Dipankar Chatterji is an Indian molecular biologist and the Honorary Professor at Molecular Biophysics Unit, Indian Institute of Science, a multidisciplinary research institute under the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India. He is known for his pioneering research on bacterial transcription. He is a recipient of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize and is an elected fellow of all the major Indian science academies. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to science and engineering.

Neelamraju Ganga Prasada Rao was an Indian geneticist and plant breeder, known for his efforts in developing hybrid varieties of sorghum, which earned him the moniker, the Father of Hybrid Sorghum. Rakesh Kumar Mishra is an Indian scientist specializing in genomics and epigenetics. Mishra retired as the 6th director of CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad, India, on the April 30th, 2021. He is currently the Director of TIGS, Bengaluru and holds J. C. Bose Fellowship at CCMB.

Madan Rao is an Indian condensed matter and biological physicist and a senior professor at National Centre for Biological Sciences. Known for his research on molecular dynamics on cell surface, Rao is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to physical sciences in 2004.

Thomas John Pucadyil is an Indian molecular biologist, biochemist and a professor and chair of biology at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune. Known for his studies on membrane biochemistry and vesicular transport, Pucadyil is an international research scholar of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute/Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a senior fellow of the Wellcome Trust- Department of Biotechnology. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to biological sciences in 2018.

Subhadeep Chatterjee is an Indian molecular biologist and a scientist at the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD). A member of Guha Research Conference, he is known for his studies on plant-microbe interactions and heads the Lab of Plant-Microbe Interactions at CDFD where he hosts several researchers.

Dr.Krishnarajanagar Nagappa Ganesh is an Indian Bio-Organic chemist and served as the (founding) director of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Tirupati since 2017 till 2023. He is also the founding Director of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, that was established in 2006 and served the office till 2017. He is a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in chemical sciences (1998) for "his outstanding contribution towards the understanding of the chemical principles of DNA molecular recognition and for his work on various facets of DNA structure and its interaction with drugs and proteins". He is also a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy since 2000.
