K. Beichhua is an Indian politician and retired surgeon. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is a former member of the Mizo National Front (MNF) [3] and served as the member of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly for Saiha before resigning to join the BJP. [4] He is former Minister of state in Government of Mizoram as Minister for Social Welfare, Excise & Narcotics & Sericulture department. [5] He resigned as MLA and later joined the BJP after getting expelled from the MNF for anti-party activities. [4] [6]

Early life

Beichhua was born on 19 December 1966 in the village of Thingsen in the Siaha district of Mizoram. [2] His father was K. Thachho. [7] Beichhua graduated with an MBBS from the Regional Medical College in Imphal, Manipur in 1991. He then began working as a general practitioner. Beichhua has stated that he has performed hundreds of operations in his career. [8]

Political career

Beichhua contested the 2008 state elections from Saiha constituency as an independent candidate. He placed third in the election with 23.30% of the vote, behind the Indian National Congress and MNF candidates. [9] He joined the MNF in 2013 and successfully contested the 2013 elections from Saiha. Beichhua received 49.62% of the votes, defeating the incumbent State Industries and Tourism Minister S. Hiato by a margin of 222 votes. [10] [11] [12] After winning the election, Beichhua quit his medical practice. He performed his last surgery in December 2013. [8] Beichhua was reelected from the Saiha constituency in the 2018 elections. [13]

Beichhua performed an emergency surgery on a female constituent at the Saiha Civil Hospital on 22 February 2017. Beichhua chose to perform the surgery himself after he was informed that the woman had developed complications, and the hospital's only surgeon was away attending a training programme in Imphal. Beichhua stated, "I was informed that a 35-year old woman was having severe abdominal pain and needed to be operated immediately. The woman's stomach had a large perforation and if the operation had not been performed, she may have died." [8]

Beichhua is married to Zochhuanawmin, who is also a doctor. [8]

Lalduhoma is an Indian politician and a former Indian Police Service officer who is serving as the 6th Chief Minister of Mizoram since 8 December 2023. Resigning from the security service to the Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he was elected as Member of Parliament to the Lok Sabha from Mizoram in 1984. He left the Indian National Congress, the party from which he was elected, for which he was disqualified from the parliament. He became the first MP to be discharged upon anti-defection law in India.

The legislative assembly election was held on 28 November 2018 to elect members of the 40 constituencies in Mizoram. Mizo National Front won 26 seats in the election. This was the first time that Congress does not have any government in any of the states in Northeast India.

The Mizoram Peace Accord, 1986 was an official agreement between the Government of India and the Mizo National Front (MNF) to end insurgency and violence in Mizoram, India, that started in 1966. The Mizo National Front was an organisation of Mizo secessionists led by Laldenga to fight for independence from India. The movement was basically due to lack of support from the government during the great famine in Mizoram in the late 1950s. Political insurgency and social unrest ensued in the next decades. After a number of negotiations, the document titled Mizoram Accord, 1986: Memorandum of Settlement was finally signed on 30 June 1986. It was signed by Laldenga for MNF, R.D. Pradhan, Home Secretary, Government of India, and Lalkhama, Chief Secretary, Government of Mizoram. It is remarked as the most and only successful peace agreement in India after its independence from British Empire in 1947.

The Zoram People's Movement is an alliance of six regional parties formed under the leadership of MLA and former IPS Officer Lalduhoma. The party believes in secularism and the protection of religious minorities in India. In 2023 Mizoram Assembly polls, the party won 27 seats out of 40 seats and Lalduhoma became the Chief Minister of Mizoram.

Hnahthial district is one of the eleven districts of Mizoram state in India. The creation of Hnahthial District was first notified on 12 September 2008 but until 2020, it remained non-functional despite a number of promises made by top political leaders and an all-out effort by Hnahthial District Function Demand Committee to let the state government make it functional. Hnahthial district was made functional only 12 years later on 3 June 2019 with the creation of the office of the Deputy Commissioner.

R Lalzirliana is a Mizo National Front politician from Mizoram. He was the minister for power and electricity, art and culture, land resources, soil and water conservation and district council affairs departments of Mizoram.

Rajkumar Imo Singh, also known as R.K. Imo Singh is an Indian politician from the State of Manipur and a former member of the Indian National Congress. He was elected as a member of the Manipur Legislative Assembly from Sagolband constituency in Imphal West District from the Indian National Congress in 2012 & 2017 Manipur Legislative Assembly election, and from Bharatiya Janata Party in 2022 Manipur Legislative Assembly election. He was expelled from Indian National Congress in 2020 for voting in favour of BJP Rajya Sabha Candidate Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba. He joined Bharatiya Janata Party in November 2021. He is the eldest son of Rajkumar Jaichandra Singh, the first Union Minister from Manipur in the erstwhile ministry of Rajiv Gandhi. He was subsequently deputed as the Chief Minister of the State. His grandfather R.K. Birchandra Singh was the first Congress President of the State of Manipur when Manipur attained statehood. R.K. Imo Singh is also the President of Manipur Cricket Association, affiliated to BCCI.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2023 Mizoram Legislative Assembly election</span>

Legislative Assembly elections were held in Mizoram on 7 November 2023 to elect all 40 members of Mizoram Legislative Assembly, which had 174 candidates and saw 80.66% voter turnout. The votes were counted on 4 December 2023 which showed the Zoram People's Movement's victory winning 27 seats out of 40.

H. Biakzaua is an Indian politician from Mizoram. He has been elected in Mizoram Legislative Assembly election in 2018 from Lawngtlai East as candidate of the Mizo National Front. He is the former deputy speaker of Mizoram Legislative Assembly.

Prova Chakma is an Indian politician in the Mizoram Legislative Assembly. She is currently serving as an MLA from West Tuipui constituency of Lunglei district.

Lalramliana Papuia is an Indian politician from the state of Mizoram. He is currently serving as an MLA from Lunglei South Constituency of Lunglei district in the 2023 Mizoram Legislative Assembly Elections. He defeated sitting MLA K. Pachhunga by a margin of 1,226 votes.
