KPET (690 AM) is a radio station licensed to serve Lamesa, Texas, United States. The station is owned by Dawson County Broadcasting LLC/DCB License Sub LLC. The station's 280-foot tower is located at the south edge of the city of Lamesa.

Programming

KPET's plays country music, play-by-play sports and news. It operates 24 hours a day on 105.1 FM, 690 AM, and on Northland Cable across the area. The host of morning show is Mike Martini with Danny Moffat news.

Don Sitton worked at KPET for 29 years. He died October 13, 2018 of cancer.

KPET airs Lamesa High School sports, Texas Tech Red Raiders basketball and football, and Texas Rangers Major League baseball.

History

The call letters stand for "PET"roleum, found and pumped in nearby oil fields (Texas Permian Basin). The station was authorized by the FCC in 1946, and went on the air around May 10, 1947.^[1] The founders were Kermit S. Ashby, R. O. Parker, and R. A. Woodson doing business as Lamesa Broadcasting Company. Mr. Ashby was onetime owner or cofounder of several Texas stations, including KPET; 1400 AM KVOP Plainview, Texas; and 1050 AM KCAS Slaton, Texas. The studios were located on South First street, west of the town square and the tower sat/sits on a high knoll overlooking the city of Lamesa. Studios are now at the tower, directly above Sulphur Draw, which forms the headwaters of the Colorado River, one of the main rivers in Texas.^[2] The station has had the same call letters since it signed on in 1947.

The station was later owned by the Parkers and the Bradburys. In 1959, Thomas E. Conner and Bob Bradbury purchased KHEM and KFNE (FM) in Big Spring, Texas. In 1960, they bought KPET. They reorganized as The Cobra Corp. in 1963. Thomas E. Conner purchased the station on October 1, 1968, as The Conner Corporation. An FM station on 100.3 was added in 1966 (founded as KPET-FM, changed to KELE^[3] in early 1969, and voluntarily taken off air in 1972 or 1973); the station was sold in 1973 to a company headquartered in Dallas.

Don Sitton acquired the station in 1989 and was known as "The Voice of Lamesa." He remained with the station until his death in 2018.

It was acquired by the previous owners in January 2008.

The station founded and later spun off stations now known as KMMX (FM) Tahoka, Texas (Lubbock area) and KTXC Lamesa (Midland–Odessa area). KPET works with the schools in its home area, including the Lamesa Independent School District, Klondike schools, Odonnell School District, Sands schools, and Borden County schools. It has broadcast programs of the churches of Lamesa for more than 70 years. The station went off the air when the owner at the time unexpectedly passed away, and at the time of this writing, it is unknown if it will be resurrected.

The station carries the syndicated Bobby Bones Show on Monday through Saturday mornings, and After Midnight with Granger Smith overnight. The rest of the weekday schedule features local DJs. The studios and offices are on North Mesa Street in West Central El Paso.

KCLE is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Burleson, Texas, which serves the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. It is owned by Tron Dinh Do, through licensee Intelli, LLC., and broadcasts Vietnamese language music and talk from a network based in California. First licensed in July 1922, it is one of Texas' oldest radio stations.

KJIM is a commercial AM radio station in Sherman, Texas. The station is owned by Bob Mark Allen Productions. KJIM airs a primary adult standards radio format featuring programming from America's Best Music, a service of Westwood One, and also airs secondary classic hits and soft adult contemporary formats. World and national news is heard every hour from CBS Radio News as well as a broadcast cycle of NOAA Weather Radio station WXK22. KJIM's studios, offices, and the transmitter are on Woodlawn Road in Denison, Texas.

KGGF is a commercial AM radio station in Coffeyville, Kansas. It airs a talk radio format and is owned by Sek Media, LLC. The studios and offices are on West 8th Street in Coffeyville.

WJGL is a commercial FM radio station in Jacksonville, Florida. The station is owned by Cox Radio, a division of the Cox Media Group. WJGL airs a classic hits radio format that leans towards classic rock, playing primarily rock songs from the 1970s, 80s and some 90s, while avoiding pop/dance artists such as Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna.

KASI is a commercial AM radio station in Ames, Iowa, broadcasting a talk radio format. The station is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc., and is licensed to iHM Licenses, LLC. The studios and offices are on Main Street in Ames.

KTSM is a commercial AM radio station licensed to El Paso, Texas. It is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. and airs a talk radio format. The studios are on North Mesa Drive in west central El Paso.

KJJT (98.5 MHz) was an FM radio station licensed to Los Ybanez, Texas.

KGBC is a terrestrial American brokered time AM radio facility, paired with an FM relay translator. KGBC is licensed to serve the City of Galveston, Texas. K269GS is licensed to serve Houston, broadcasting from a location near Baytown, off of W Baker Road & Texas Highway 330. Established in 1947, KGBC Radio is wholly owned by SIGA Broadcasting, Inc., of Houston, Texas.

WDND was a radio station licensed to serve the South Bend, Indiana, United States, area. The WDND call letters were the last ones used before the station went silent. While silent, the station call sign was changed to WPNT, although these call letters were never used on-the-air before the station was deleted.

WDBF-FM is an American radio station, licensed to Mount Union, Pennsylvania. It broadcasts with an effective radiated power of 3,000 watts. The station is owned by Seven Mountains Media, through licensee Southern Belle, LLC. It is part of a simulcast of WIBF of Mexico. Although also owned by Seven Mountains Media, WIBF and WDBF do not feature the same programming as the network of Bigfoot Country stations based in Selinsgrove.

KVLM is a non-commercial FM radio station licensed to Lamesa, Texas, and serving the Midland-Big Spring-Odessa region of Texas. WMGM-FM was a radio station in New York City, broadcasting at 100.3 MHz. It was owned by Loew's, Inc., a subsidiary of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio alongside radio station WMGM, which was previously WHN. One of New York's earliest FM outlets, WMGM-FM broadcast from 1942 to 1955.
