Kantilal Vardichand "Kanti" Mardia OBE (born 1935) is an Indian-British statistician specialising in directional statistics, multivariate analysis, geostatistics, statistical bioinformatics and statistical shape analysis. [1] [2] He was born in Sirohi, Rajasthan, India in a Jain family and now resides and works in Leeds. [3] He is known for his series of tests of multivariate normality based measures of multivariate skewness and kurtosis [4] [5] [6] as well as work on the statistical measures of shape. [7]

Life and career

Mardia was educated at the Ismail Yusuf College at the University of Bombay (BSc 1955, MSc in statistics 1957), the University of Poona (MSc in pure mathematics 1961), the University of Rajasthan (PhD 1965) and the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne (PhD 1967, DSc 1973). [8] He held academic positions at the Institute of Science, Mumbai and the University of Hull.

Mardia was appointed professor of applied statistics and head of the Department of Statistics in the School of Mathematics at the University of Leeds in 1973. He retired in 2000 with the title emeritus professor and is currently senior research professor of applied statistics at Leeds, where he has held the Leverhulme Emeritus Fellowship since 2017. [9] [10] He has been a long-term visiting professor at the University of Oxford since 2013, and was adjunct faculty with the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad from 2012 to 2014. [1] [2]

He helped establish both the Centre of Medical Imaging Research (CoMIR) and the Centre of Statistical Bioinformatics (CoSB) at Leeds, and was initially the director of CoMIR. [2] He has written several books and edited conference proceedings.

In 1973, Mardia founded the annual University of Leeds Annual Statistics Research Workshops, designed to promote interdisciplinary research. These workshops attract an international audience and focus on applied statistical topics. [11]

Mardia has received a number of honours, including a 2003 Guy Medal in Silver from the Royal Statistical Society, which noted "his many path breaking contributions to statistical science ... and his lasting leadership role in interdisciplinary research"; [12] [13] the 2013 Wilks Memorial Award from the American Statistical Association, which noted his "seminal results in shape analysis, spatial statistics, multivariate analysis, directional data analysis, and bioinformatics"; [14] [15] the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Indian Statistical Association; [16] [17] the 2020 Mahatma Gandhi Medal of Honour from the NRI Institute; [18] [19] and the 2021 OneJAIN Life Achievement Award from the Jain All-Party Parliamentary Group. [20] He is the founding Vice-President of International Indian Statistical Association, and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the Royal Statistical Society. [16] [21] [22] [23] The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology's 2020 Virtual Symposium on Directional Statistics was dedicated to Mardia. [24] He gave the 40th Fisher Memorial Lecture on 18 November 2022 at the Oxford Mathematical Institute. [25] A festschrift honoring his work resulted in an edited volume, Geometry Driven Statistics. He is a practicing Jain and strict vegetarian. [3] His 1990 book The Scientific Foundations of Jainism introduced the Four Noble Truths of Jains. [26] [27] [28] He founded the Yorkshire Jain Foundation. [19] [29]

Mardia was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2023 New Year Honours for services to statistical science. [30] [19]

Mardia Prize

The Mardia Prize, awarded by the Royal Statistical Society, was founded by Mardia in 2015 to foster collaboration between statisticians and scientists via "workshops in emerging interdisciplinary areas". [31] [32] The first award was given in 2016 [33] (Topic: renewable natural resources management, food security, climate change and the illegal wildlife trade) with the second in 2018 [34] (Topic: extreme weather research) and the third in 2019 [35] (Topic: economics of mental health).

Hirotugu Akaike was a Japanese statistician. In the early 1970s, he formulated the Akaike information criterion (AIC). AIC is now widely used for model selection, which is commonly the most difficult aspect of statistical inference; additionally, AIC is the basis of a paradigm for the foundations of statistics. Akaike also made major contributions to the study of time series. As well, he had a large role in the general development of statistics in Japan.

In directional statistics, the Kent distribution, also known as the 5-parameter Fisher–Bingham distribution, is a probability distribution on the unit sphere. It is the analogue on S2 of the bivariate normal distribution with an unconstrained covariance matrix. The Kent distribution was proposed by John T. Kent in 1982, and is used in geology as well as bioinformatics.

In statistics, the term higher-order statistics (HOS) refers to functions which use the third or higher power of a sample, as opposed to more conventional techniques of lower-order statistics, which use constant, linear, and quadratic terms. The third and higher moments, as used in the skewness and kurtosis, are examples of HOS, whereas the first and second moments, as used in the arithmetic mean (first), and variance (second) are examples of low-order statistics. HOS are particularly used in the estimation of shape parameters, such as skewness and kurtosis, as when measuring the deviation of a distribution from the normal distribution.

The Wilks Memorial Award is awarded by the American Statistical Association to recognize outstanding contributions to statistics. It was established in 1964 and is awarded yearly. It is named in memory of the statistician Samuel S. Wilks. The award consists of a medal, a citation and a cash honorarium of US$1500.

In statistics, L-moments are a sequence of statistics used to summarize the shape of a probability distribution. They are linear combinations of order statistics (L-statistics) analogous to conventional moments, and can be used to calculate quantities analogous to standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis, termed the L-scale, L-skewness and L-kurtosis respectively. Standardised L-moments are called L-moment ratios and are analogous to standardized moments. Just as for conventional moments, a theoretical distribution has a set of population L-moments. Sample L-moments can be defined for a sample from the population, and can be used as estimators of the population L-moments.

Ramanathan Gnanadesikan was an Indian statistician, known for his work in multivariate data analysis and leadership in the field. He received his Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina and headed research groups in statistics at Bell Laboratories and Bellcore. He was a fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Statistical Association, Institute of Mathematical Statistics and Royal Statistical Society, and elected member of the International Statistical Institute. He served as President of Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the International Association for Statistical Computing, the latter of which he helped found.

In statistics, the Jarque–Bera test is a goodness-of-fit test of whether sample data have the skewness and kurtosis matching a normal distribution. The test is named after Carlos Jarque and Anil K. Bera. The test statistic is always nonnegative. If it is far from zero, it signals the data do not have a normal distribution.

Bani K. Mallick is a Distinguished Professor and Susan M. Arseven `75 Chair in Data Science and Computational Statistics in the Department of Statistics at Texas A&M University in College Station. He is the Director of the Center for Statistical Bioinformatics. Mallick is well known for his contribution to the theory and practice of Bayesian semiparametric methods and uncertainty quantification. Mallick is an elected fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Statistical Association, Institute of Mathematical Statistics, International Statistical Institute and the Royal Statistical Society. He received the Distinguished research award from Texas A&M University and the Young Researcher award from the International Indian Statistical Association.

Alan Enoch Gelfand is an American statistician, and is currently the James B. Duke Professor of Statistics and Decision Sciences at Duke University. Gelfand’s research includes substantial contributions to the fields of Bayesian statistics, spatial statistics and hierarchical modeling.

Dipak Kumar Dey is an Indian-American statistician best known for his work on Bayesian methodologies. He is currently the Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Connecticut. Dey has an international reputation as a statistician as well as a data scientist. Since he earned a Ph.D. degree in statistics from Purdue University in 1980, Dey has made tremendous contributions to the development of modern statistics, especially in Bayesian analysis, decision science and model selection. Dey has published more than 10 books and edited volumes, and over 260 research articles in peer-refereed national and international journals. In addition, the statistical methodologies that he has developed has found wide applications in a plethora of interdisciplinary and applied fields, such as biometry and bioinformatics, genetics, econometrics, environmental science, and social science. Dey has supervised 40 Ph.D. students, and presented more than 200 professional talks in colloquia, seminars and conferences all over the world. During his career, Dey has been a visiting professor or scholar at many institutions or research centers around the world, such as Macquarie University, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile,, University of São Paulo, University of British Columbia, Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute, etc. Dey is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the International Society for Bayesian Analysis and the International Statistical Institute.

Francesca Chiaromonte is an Italian statistician known for her work on statistical genetics and dimensionality reduction. She works at Pennsylvania State University as the Dorothy Foehr Huck and J. Lloyd Huck Chair in Statistics for the Life Sciences, professor of statistics, and director of the Genome Sciences Institute, and in the Institute of Economics of the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Italy as the scientific coordinator for Economics and Management in the era of Data Science.

Adelchi Azzalini is an Italian statistician and educator. He is known for research in likelihood inference and multivariate statistics including the development of skew normal distributions.
