Karen Ann Thole [1] (born July 11, 1960) is an American mechanical engineer who has been serving as the 16th dean of the University of Michigan College of Engineering since August 2024. She previously served as the head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Pennsylvania State University from 2006 to 2021. Thole was first promoted to professor in 2003 at Virginia Tech.
Thole was born on July 11, 1960, in Breese, Illinois [2] to an army veteran father. [3] She was raised on a dairy farm and by fifth grade was driving a tractor around the field. [4] She graduated from Central Community High School. [5] She enrolled at Eastern Illinois University for two years before transferring to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. During her undergraduate career, she received the University of Illinois' Caterpillar Scholarship. [5]
She received a Bachelor of Science with a major in mechanical engineering in 1982 and a Master of Science in mechanical engineering in 1984, both from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She received a Doctor of Philosophy in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1994. [6] [2]
After receiving the docorate, Thole spent one year as a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute for Thermal Turbomachinery at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany. [7] She soon returned to North America and accepted an assistant professor position at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. [2] During her short tenure at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Thole received a 1996 National Science Foundation CAREER Award. [8] Thole left the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1999 to join the faculty at Virginia Tech, where her husband Michael Alley also worked. [9] In 1999, she accepted a position in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where she was promoted to professor in 2003, and was recognized as the William S. Cross Professor of Mechanical Engineering in 2005. While there, she focused on heat transfer and fluid mechanics while specializing in turbulent boundary layers, convective heat transfer, and high freestream turbulence effects. As a result of her research success, Thole became the first woman at Virginia Tech to be awarded an endowed engineering professorship in 2005. [10]
Shortly following her promotion, Thole left Virginia Tech to become the head of the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) in July 2006. [11] In this role, she advocated, recruited, and retained girls and women in science, technology, engineering, and math fields. As such, she was honored by the White House as a "Champion of Change" in 2011. [12] Thole also established the Steady Thermal Aero Research Turbine Laboratory which was "focused on gas turbine heat transfer during continuous operation at realistic engine conditions." [13] A few years later, Thole was also named the Society of Women Engineers’ 2014 Distinguished Engineering Educator. [14]
During her tenure at Penn State, Thole established the Engineering Ambassadors Network, a program that provided undergraduate students with professional skills. As such, she received the 2016 Edwin F. Church Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. [15] She also made significant technical contributions in "pioneering new cooling strategies for airfoils in gas turbine engines, which allows for higher operating temperatures and reduced fuel consumption." [16] Thole then collaborated with other engineers to find ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from turbines. As a result of her research, Thole testified in front of the United States Congress. [4] In 2017, Thole was appointed a Penn State Distinguished Professor [13] and appointed to American Society of Mechanical Engineers Board of Governors. [17] She also received the 2017 Claire L. Felbinger Award for Diversity for "extraordinary success in achieving or facilitating diversity and inclusiveness in the technological segments of our society." [18]
In 2019, John J. Brennan established the Professor Karen A. Thole Annual Scholarship for Diversity in Engineering. [19] Thole was also awarded the Air Breathing Propulsion Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. [16] In 2021 she stepped down as department chair, and was succeeded by Mary Frecker. [20]
In May 2024, Thole was announced as the University of Michigan College of Engineering's first female Robert J. Vlasic Dean. Her term began on August 1, 2024. [21] [22]

Before engineering was recognized as a formal profession, women with engineering skills often sought recognition as inventors. During the Islamic Golden Period from the 8th century until the 15th century there were many Muslim women who were inventors and engineers, such as the 10th-century astrolabe maker Al-ʻIjliyyah.

Nancy Burr Deloye Fitzroy was an American engineer specializing in heat transfer and fluid dynamics. She was one of the first female helicopter pilots.
Betty Lou Bailey was a General Electric Company mechanical engineer from the United States. She held a patent for an aircraft variable exhaust nozzle. The invention operated so that one would vary both the throat and the exit diameters for the hot gas flows. In honor of her legacy, the Society of Women Engineers named a scholarship after her. To date, that scholarship is still being distributed to eligible female graduate students who pursue a career in engineering.
Dame Karen Margaret Holford is a Welsh-domiciled engineer, professor of mechanical engineering and vice-chancellor and chief executive of Cranfield University. She was formerly deputy vice-chancellor at Cardiff University. She is also a former pro vice-chancellor of the College of Physical Sciences and Engineering and head of the School of Engineering. She is an active researcher of acoustic emission and her work has been applied to damage assessment inspections on industrial components.

She is the director of AVIATE Center of flying cars at UIUC, funded through a NASA University Leadership Initiative. She was the inaugural director of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory during 2015–2017, associated with the Coordinated Science Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Sam Yusuf Zamrik is a Syrian/American mechanical and consulting engineer, and Emeritus Professor at Pennsylvania State University and expert in the field of high pressure technology, and fracture mechanics. He is more generally known as former president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2007-08.

She specialized in program evaluation, and conducted some of the first research on the administration and evaluation of public works initiatives. She was the chair of the Department of Public Administration at American University, a program officer at the Transportation Research Board, and a senior research associate at the Japan International Transport Institute.
Francine Battaglia is an American aerospace engineer specializing in computational fluid dynamics, including the study of fluidized beds and of fire, fire whirls, and flame spread. Her other research interests include ventilation and energy usage in architectural design, and alternative and renewable energy systems. She is professor and chair in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of the University at Buffalo, where she directs the Computational Research for Energy Systems and Transport Laboratory.
Laura Lynn Pauley is an American mechanical engineer specializing in computational fluid dynamics, including the simulation of cavitation, flow separation, and large eddy simulation, with applications including the design of airfoils, boat propellers, and centrifugal pumps. She is a professor of mechanical engineering in the Penn State College of Engineering, the former Arthur L. Glenn Professor of Engineering Education at Penn State, and the interim executive director of the Penn State faculty senate.
Kathryn W. Jablokow is an American engineer focused on engineering education, the engineering design process, and the cognitive psychology of engineering creativity. Grace D. O'Connell is an American biomechanical engineer known for her research on the biomechanics of the human spine, on the degeneration and regeneration of spinal tissue, and on the comparison of its properties with the spines of animals used in the study of lumbar disc disease. She is an associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, where she also held the Don M. Cunningham Chair in Mechanical Engineering.
Zoubeida Ounaies is a Tunisian mechanical engineer, whose research involves nanocomposites, smart materials, and piezoelectricity in polymers. Jacqueline O'Connor is an American mechanical engineer whose research concerns the fluid dynamics in combustion, including the experimental observation of reacting flows using high-speed lasers, and decarbonization of carbon-intensive industries. She is a professor of mechanical engineer at Pennsylvania State University, where she heads the Reacting Flow Dynamics Laboratory.
