Karolina Urban is a Canadian ice hockey and street (ball) hockey player. Selected by the Toronto Furies in the 2012 CWHL Draft, she was also a member of the Canada women's national ball hockey team that won a gold medal at the International Street and Ball Hockey Federation (ISBHF) 2015 Women's World Championships in Zug, Switzerland. Urban also played with the Markham Thunder in the 2017–18 CWHL season, winning the Clarkson Cup with the team.

Playing career

Born in Poland, Urban’s family emigrated to Canada when she was four years old. Raised in Kamloops, British Columbia, Urban played both soccer and ice hockey during her high school years. Winning a gold medal in ice hockey at the 2006 British Columbia Winter Games, Urban was named to the provincial team that competed at the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, Yukon. [1]

CIS

Having joined the Toronto Varsity Blues women's ice hockey program in autumn 2007, Urban played for head coach (and former Winter Games gold medalist) Vicky Sunohara from 2010 to 2012. In her final three seasons, Urban served as team captain and finished top ten all time in points.

On January 4, 2010, Urban notched four points in one game versus the Guelph Gryphons. Urban was only the fifth player in Lady Blues history to be a three-time captain. In her rookie year, the Blues finished with Ontario University Athletics (OUA) silver falling to Laurier in a best-of-three OUA final. She helped the Varsity Blues jump from a sixth-place finish in the OUA in 2010–11 to a third-place finish the following year. In addition, the Blues finished tenth in the national rankings. Statistically, she recorded 41 goals and 46 assists, for a U Sports career total of 85 points.

In her final season with the Varsity Blues, Urban was a nominee for the 2012 University of Toronto Female Athlete of the Year Award. [2]

CWHL

Selected by the Toronto Furies in the 5th round of the 2012 CWHL Draft, Urban would play one season (2012–13) for the Furies. Wearing number 67, Urban made her debut on October 20, 2012 against the Brampton Thunder. [3]

A 4-1 home win on November 18, 2012 saw Urban log the first assist and goal in her CWHL career, subsequently logging the first multi-point game in her career. She would earn an assist on the first goal of the game, scored by Shannon Moulson. In the third period, Urban would score at the 18:19 mark, with Kristy Zamora gaining credit for the assist. [4]

The following season, Urban joined the Calgary Inferno, helping the squad qualify for the postseason for the first time in franchise history. With the Inferno, Urban registered an assist on January 19, 2014. Along with Laura Dostaler, the two assisted on Erin Duggan’s first-period goal, part of a 5–1 win against the Brampton Thunder. [5]

After taking a short break from the CWHL, Karolina was signed as a free agent with the Markham Thunder for the 2017-2018 inaugural season. The Markham Thunder went on to win the Clarkson Cup after upsetting the Montreal Les Cannadiennes in the first round and beating the Kunlun Red Star 2-1.

Europe

At the 2014 European Women’s Champions Cup, Urban competed with Kazakh team Aisulu Almaty. In the second round of Group G play, Urban accumulated three points. [6]

For the 2015–16 women’s ice hockey season, Urban joined the Aisulu Almaty women’s ice hockey team, competing in the European Women’s Hockey League. [7] She was one of three Canadians on the roster, joining Rayne Cruickshank and Chelsea Purcell. Urban and Purcell had previously been teammates on the Calgary Inferno during the 2013–14 CWHL season.

Ball hockey

As a member of the Canada women's national ball hockey team, Urban played in seven games. The Canadian team went on to capture the gold medal, posting an undefeated mark. [8]

Urban’s first appearance for Canada in the tournament was a 10-0 win against Italy on June 22. [9] A 9–1 win against Switzerland on June 24 saw Urban and Chelsea Purcell both gain the assist on a goal scored by April Drake. [10] In the semifinals, Urban and Drake would both log assists on a goal scored by Purcell, Canada's second of the game. [11]

Personal

In 2012, Urban graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Physical Health and Education in Kinesiology and Exercise Science. Urban would also earn a Master of Science (MSc) in Neuroscience at the University of Calgary in 2014. She completed her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Rehabilitation Science at the University of Toronto.

The 2013–14 CWHL season was the seventh in league history. The Montreal Stars finished as regular season champions while the top four leading scorers in the regular season are all Stars players . The Toronto Furies won the 2014 Clarkson Cup, making them the first team to finish in fourth place during the regular season to claim the Cup. The Calgary Inferno also qualified for their first-ever postseason berth while goaltender DeLayne Brian became the first Inferno goaltender with a winning record in the regular season.

The 2014–15 CWHL season was the eighth in league history. The Boston Blades captured the 2015 Clarkson Cup in a 3-2 overtime win against the Montreal Stars.

The 1st Canadian Women's Hockey League All-Star Game, took place on December 13, 2014 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Admission was free, and 6,850 people attended the game. The game aired live on Sportsnet One in Canada, as well as on the NHL Network in the United States. The event featured three 15-minute periods which aired on television, and had a Skills Competition following the game.

Sarah Davis is a Canadian women's ice hockey player who made her international debut competing for the Canadian National Women's Under-18 team at the 2010 IIHF World Women's U18 Championship. She was named to the roster of the Canada women's national ice hockey team that competed at the 2015 IIHF Women's World Championship. She is the first women's ice hockey player from Newfoundland to be selected for the national team. In addition, she is the first woman from the province to have won the Clarkson Cup, achieving the feat in 2016 with the Calgary Inferno.

Delayne Brian is a Canadian women's ice hockey player with the Calgary Inferno of the CWHL. Brian helped the Inferno capture the 2016 Clarkson Cup championship, where she was recognized as Playoff MVP.

The 2015–16 CWHL season is the ninth season of the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL).

The 2016 draft for the Canadian Women's Hockey League took place on August 21, 2016. Players must register before midnight on August 1, 2016, and pay an entry fee of CDN $150.

Alyssa Baldin is an elite women's ice hockey player who has also competed for the Canada women's national inline hockey team. With regards to Baldin's women's ice hockey career, she has competed at the university level in both the NCAA and CIS. Acquired by the Toronto Furies in the 2013 CWHL Draft, she was on the Clarkson Cup winning team in 2014.

The Italy women's national ball hockey team is the women's national ball hockey team of Italy, and a member of the International Street and Ball Hockey Federation (ISBHF). The current team captain is Canadian-born Christina D'Ambrogio, who is of Italian heritage and once competed in NCAA women's ice hockey with the Holy Cross Crusaders.

The 2016–17 CWHL season was the tenth in the history of the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL). Opening weekend took place on Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16, with a pair of series taking place in the Greater Toronto Area. The Toronto Furies hosted the Boston Blades in the first Heritage Game of the season. The 2016 Commissioners Trophy winning Canadiennes de Montreal took on the Brampton Thunder during opening weekend. The defending Clarkson Cup champion Calgary Inferno played their first game of the season on October 22, as they hosted the Brampton Thunder. Ottawa's Canadian Tire Centre was the host venue for the Clarkson Cup finals for the second consecutive year.

Alexandra "Lexie" Hoffmeyer is a former women's ice hockey player. Among her career accomplishments, she is a Clarkson Cup champion and earned a gold medal with Canada women's national ball hockey team at the 2015 ISBHF World Championships in Zug, Switzerland.

Chelsea Purcell is a former women's ice hockey player. Among her career accomplishments, she was the first captain in the history of the CWHL's Team Alberta franchise. In addition, she was the captain of the Canada women's national ball hockey team that won a gold medal at the 2015 ISBHF World Championships in Zug, Switzerland.

Jenny Brine is a former women’s ice hockey player. Having played at the NCAA level with the Harvard Crimson women's ice hockey program, she was also a member of the Toronto Furies from 2010-13. Brine would also appear with the Canada women's national ball hockey team at three ISBHF World Championships.

Kori Cheverie is a Canadian retired ice hockey player, currently serving as the head coach of PWHL Montreal of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL). She is also the assistant coach of the Canadian national women's ice hockey team. She was previously the assistant coach for TMU Bold men's ice hockey team. She was the first woman to be hired to a full-time coaching role in U Sports men's ice hockey history.

Katelyn Gosling is a Canadian women's ice hockey player. Having earned Canadian Interuniversity Sport All-Canadian honours while competing for the Western Mustangs women's ice hockey program, Gosling was claimed by the Calgary Inferno in the 2016 CWHL Draft. She also competed with Canada's national team at the Winter Universiade, serving as Canada's captain at the 2017 tournament.

The 2018–19 CWHL season was the 12th and final season of the Canadian Women's Hockey League.
