Lieutenant General Kayanja Muhanga (born 1965), is Ugandan army officer. He currently serves as Commander Of Land forces in UPDF . He was appointed to that position in October 2022 by the President of Uganda and Commander in chief of the UPDF, Yoweri Museveni. He previously served as commander of the Uganda People's Defence Force contingent in Eastern DRC under operation code named Operation Shujaa. He was appointed to that position in January 2021 by General Yoweri Museveni, the Commander in Chief of the UPDF and the President of Uganda. [1] Prior to that, Maj. General Muhanga served as the commandant of the military police within the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). [2]

History

Kayanja Muhanga was born in Fort Portal, Kabarole District, Western Uganda, circa 1964. [3] He is an older brother to journalist, Andrew Mwenda, the publisher and editor of The Independent (Uganda), newsmagazine. He also has a sister, Margaret Muhanga , a staffer in the Office of the President of Uganda. His father is Mzee Phillip Muhanga of Fort Portal. [4]

Formal education

He attended Duhaga Secondary School in Hoima district and later Mpanga Day School, in Fort Portal. In 1985, while still in S5, he joined Museveni's National Resistance Army (NRA).

Military education

He attended the Cadet Officers Course at the Uganda Military Academy in 1988. At that time, the school was located at Quaddafi Barracks in Jinja, Eastern Uganda, before it was relocated to Kabamba, in Mubende District.

Military career

He joined the NRA at the rank of Private, serving in that position until NRA captured power in 1986. He served in the military police unit based in Kasese. He served in the Presidential Protection Unit at the rank of private from 1986 until 1988. Following the Junior Cadet Officer Course, he served in the office of the Chief of Combat Operations, at the rank of second lieutenant. He was transferred to the Directorate of Military Intelligence in 1990, serving there until 1993. From 1993 until 1997, he served as the Intelligence Officer, attached to the UPDF barracks in Mubende. He was assigned to the Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce, at the rank of Captain. He was promoted through Major, Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel and was posted to Mogadishu, Somalia, as part of the UPDF contingent to AMISOM. While there, he commanded Uganda’s "Battle Group Eight" and concurrently served as the deputy commander for the Ugandan contingent in Somalia. [5]

After his tour of duty he served as the Chief of the Military Police in the UPDF, until January 2014. [6] In January 2014, Colonel Kayanja Muhanga was appointed Commander of the UPDF Operations in South Sudan. [7] In February 2014, he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier. [8]

Major General Elly Kayanja, is a Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). Effective September 2014, he is the Head of Operation Wealth Creation Programme, whose objective is to improve the standard of living of rural citizens, through farming. Previously, he served as the Deputy Director of National Intelligence, under General David Sejusa. Prior to that, he served as the Director General of the Internal Security Organisation.

Brigadier Patrick Kankiriho was a military officer in Uganda. He was a senior commander in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). At the time of his death, he was the commander of the 2nd Army Division in Mbarara, Western Uganda. In 2008, he served as the commander of Operation Lightning Thunder, the military operation that dislodged the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels out of Garamba National Forest, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Major General Richard Prit Olum, commonly known as Dick Olum, is a military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). Effective 13 May 2024, he serves as commander of the "South Sudan Stabilization Mechanism", an observer force to ensure adherence to the peace agreements. Before that, he served as the Ugandan commander of the UPDF forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo under the joint Uganda/DRC mission code named Operation Shujaa. He contemporaneously served as the commander of the UPDF Mountain Division, based in Fort Portal, Kabarole District at the base of the Rwenzori Mountains. His appointment was made on 12 October 2022.

Lieutenant General Sam Kavuma, whose full name is Samuel Kavuma, is a Ugandan senior military officer. He currently serves as the Commander of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), effective March 2024. Before that, from 24 June 2021 until 24 March 2024, he was the deputy coordinator of the Operation Wealth Creation, a presidential appointment by Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Immediately before that position, he served as the deputy commander of the Uganda People's Defence Force Air Force. Before that, Kavuma served as the Commander of the Uganda People's Defence Force Contingent in Somalia, as part of the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM). Paul L'Okech, was a senior military officer at the rank of Lieutenant General, in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF), who was appointed Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Uganda Police Force on 16 December 2020. Between November 2017 and December 2019, he served on special assignment "to monitor on behalf of the guarantors of the South Sudan peace process, the assembling, screening, demobilization and integration of the armed forces of South Sudan".

Brigadier General Francis Takirwa, is a Ugandan military officer who, effective December 2019, is the commanding officer of the Second Division of the Uganda People's Defence Forces, based in the city of Mbarara in the Western Region of Uganda.

Major General Abel Kandiho, is a Ugandan military officer. He serves as the Joint Chief of Staff in the Uganda Police Force, effective 9 February 2022.
