Keelavasal [1] (Keellhavaasal) is a neighborhood in Madurai [2] of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India.
It is located with the geographic coordinates of 9°55′08.0″N78°07′35.4″E / 9.918889°N 78.126500°E in Madurai.
To curb on-road parking at Keelavasal and its surrounding areas, Madurai Corporation has planned to initiate Public-private Partnership Program parking system [3] that will considerably reduce traffic jams.
Under Mass Rapid Transit system, Madurai Metrolite project that has been planned to connect Tirumangalam and Othakadai will have a station at Keelavasal. [4] [5]
There is an educational institution named St. Mary's Higher Secondary School for boys situated on East Veli street [6] at Keelavasal.
Keelavasal has a historical palace viz., Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal [7] built by King Thirumalai Nayakkar, the then ruler of Madurai.
There is a Hindu temple viz., Thenthiruvalavaya Swamy temple in Keelavasal, [8] which is maintained by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, Government of Tamil Nadu.
Also there is a Christian Catholic Church namely St. Mary's Cathedral, which was built in the year 1841, [9] on East Veli Street in Keelavasal.
Keelavasal area falls under the Madurai South Assembly constituency. [10] Also, this area belongs to Madurai Lok Sabha constituency.
Madurai, formerly known by its colonial name Madura is a major city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu and the administrative headquarters of Madurai District, which is governed by the Madurai Municipal Corporation established in 1 November 1866. Thirumalai Nayak Palace is a 17th-century palace erected in 1636 by King Tirumala Nayaka, a king of Madurai's Nayaka dynasty who ruled Madurai from 1623 to 1659, in the city of Madurai, India. The building, which can be seen today, was the main palace, in which the king lived. The original palace complex was four times bigger than the present structure. In its heyday, the palace was considered to be one of the wonders of the South. The palace is located two kilometres (1.2 mi) south east of the Meenakshi Amman Temple.

Simmakkal is a neighbourhood in Madurai district in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. Simmakkal as meant in the language of Tamil, 'Stone statue of Lion', has a statue at the heart of the neighbourhood. During the British period, out of the four giant walls on East Veli Street, West Street, North Veli Street and South Veli Street already existed, three of them except on West Veli Street were demolished by 'Marret', the then Collector of Madurai. The landmark at the entrance gate of North Veli Street was simply replaced by a 'Stone statue of Lion' found near Thirumalai Naicker Mahal. It is that area surrounding the statue is called as 'Simmakkal'.

Albert Victor Bridge which is more than 133 years old, that connects Nelpettai and Goripalayam, is constructed over river Vaigai. Nelpettai has a non-vegetarian market that sells fish, meat such as mutton, chicken, etc. On East Veli street, a famous non-vegetarian restaurant namely Amsavalli bhavan biryani restaurant that functions beyond decades, is located. A bridge 3.2 km long and 12 m wide, is planned to be constructed to reduce traffic congestion, in between Madurai Corporation Ecopark just opposite of Madurai Corporation building and Nelpettai Anna statue junction, at a project cost of about ₹175.80 crore.
