Kenshi is a real-time strategy action role-playing game developed and published by Lo-Fi Games for Windows. The game focuses on sandbox gameplay features that give the player freedom to do what they want in its world instead of focusing on a linear story. Kenshi's development was primarily led by a single person over the course of twelve years, and it was released on December 6, 2018.

Kenshi is an open world role-playing video game with real-time strategy elements that has no linear narrative. [1] It takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting, where it is incredibly difficult for life to survive. [1] The player starts out with no skills and struggles to survive in the early stages of the game. [1] Skills are leveled up through doing actions, such as leveling up thievery by stealing items, various combat skills by fighting, and the player can recruit other units to grow their squad. [2] The player can recruit characters from numerous different factions and species to join their squad, and can eventually build a town themselves. [2] As part of the damage system, limbs can be severed or damaged individually, with the option to replace them with prosthetic limbs if available. [3] Kenshi has many non-player locations, of sizes ranging from a single building to large cities. The game includes a world states system which creates reactions to deaths of notable people. These reactions to power vacuums can result in new locations spawning or in towns being taken over by new factions. Zones in Kenshi are not just aesthetic, as they have specific qualities, such as soil types, terrain, and resource availability. These factors come into play when players are constructing outposts. Weather is a constant concern whether or not the player decides to construct an outpost, with some types (such as acid rain) causing ill effects.
Kenshi was primarily developed by a single person, Chris Hunt, who began development around 2006–2008 in Ogre Engine. [3] [4] [5] [6] Hunt worked as a part-time security guard in order to make ends meet for the first few years of the game's development. [5] After five or so years of working his security job, Hunt was able to leave his part-time job and work on the game full-time after finding initial success with the game. [5] [6] He worked by himself on the project until 2013, when he was able to hire a small team that helped him with the project. [6] Hunt has described the world as "sword-punk", and was specifically inspired by stories of wandering rōnin and the idea of a survivor travelling a wasteland. [6]
Hunt has described his impetus for creating the game as his dislike of the "hand-holding" that other RPGs have when starting out. [6] On his general mantra for designing the game, Hunt stated that he considered himself as the player's enemy. [3] The game's playable area is 870 square kilometres (340 sq mi), which was done to place dangerous and challenging areas in between rewards that players might seek out. [3] [7] Hunt wanted different areas of the map to have different themes or factions that would make them feel unique, such as one that treats female characters differently than males. [5]
The game was released in March 2013 as one of the initial games featured in Steam's early access program. [8] [9] It had its full release on December 6, 2018. [4] [10]

Kenshi received "generally favorable reviews", according to review aggregator Metacritic. [11] PC Gamer 's Robert Zak praised the game's giant size and scope, but noted that the game could get "grindy" and that the game's UI "can get cumbersome as your group's numbers grow." [1] Rock, Paper, Shotgun noted the game's depth and compared Kenshi positively to Dwarf Fortress . [2]
In September 2020, Lo-Fi Games announced that Kenshi had sold over a million copies. [12] By April 2024, this number had increased to 2.3 million units. [13]
In March 2019, a prequel built in Unreal Engine, Kenshi 2, was announced. [14] [15]

Dead State is a turn-based survival horror role-playing video game developed by DoubleBear Productions and Iron Tower Studio set in a zombie apocalypse scenario. Players are tasked with leading a group of survivors living in a shelter in the fictional town of Splendid, Texas. Dead State was released in December 2014 after having been in Early Access since spring of that year. DoubleBear Productions continued to work on the title and in May 2015 released an "enhanced edition" which changed the name to Dead State: Reanimated.
7 Days to Die is a survival horror video game set in an open world developed by The Fun Pimps. It was released through Early Access on Steam for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X on December 13, 2013, and for Linux on November 22, 2014. Versions for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were released in 2016 through Telltale Publishing, but are no longer being developed. In late 2022, The Fun Pimps announced that the game will be re-released on consoles targeting Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5.
Factorio is a construction and management simulation game developed and published by Czech studio Wube Software. The game was announced via an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign in 2013 and released for Windows, macOS, and Linux on 14 August 2020 following a four-year long early access phase to positive reviews. RimWorld is a construction and management simulation video game developed and published by Canadian-based developer Ludeon Studios. Planet Coaster is a construction and management simulation video game developed and published by Frontier Developments for Windows. It was released worldwide on 17 November 2016. Frontier had previously worked in the amusement park construction and management genre with RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, Thrillville, Thrillville: Off the Rails, and Zoo Tycoon. A version for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, known as Planet Coaster: Console Edition, was released worldwide on 10 November 2020. The PlayStation 5 version was released in North America and Australia on 12 November 2020 and in Europe on 19 November 2020. A macOS version, developed by Aspyr, was later released on 17 November 2020 on both Steam and Mac App Store.

Deep Rock Galactic was fully released on May 13, 2020 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One after its early access release in February 28, 2018. Foxhole is a cooperative sandbox massively-multiplayer action-strategy video game developed and published by Canadian video game company Siege Camp, who are based in Toronto, Ontario. The game uses Unreal Engine 4, utilizing an axonometric projection perspective, much like that of a conventional real-time strategy video game with a top-down view. Foxhole's setting is "inspired by early 20th century warfare". The game allows the user to join one of two factions as a soldier, having the choice of contributing to a persistent war by gathering, manufacturing, and transporting resources and supplies, providing manpower and vehicles in combat, and building and managing fortifications, with the end goal of annihilating the opposing faction. Teardown is a 2022 sandbox–puzzle video game developed and published by Tuxedo Labs. The game revolves around the owner of a financially stricken demolition company, who is caught undertaking a questionable job and becomes entangled between helping police investigations and taking on further dubious assignments. Teardown features levels made of destructible voxels, and the player follows the campaign through consecutive missions. In most missions, the player must collect or destroy objects connected to a security alarm that triggers a timer. The player has unlimited time to prepare and is given upgradable tools, vehicles, and explosives to create a path within the level that allows them to complete the objectives and reach a getaway vehicle before the timer runs out.
