Kim Kielsen (born 30 November 1966) is a Greenlandic politician,who served as leader of the Siumut party and sixth prime minister of Greenland between 2014 and 2021.
Kielsen was originally a mariner,and then a police officer with Rigspolitiet from 1996 to 2003 in Upernavik and Paamiut.
Kielsen entered politics in 2005 when he was elected to the Greenlandic parliament for Siumut and to the municipal government of Paamiut. In the government of Aleqa Hammond,he was the minister for housing,nature and the environment. He became acting premier in October 2014 when Hammond stepped down and the Siumut party subsequently elected Kielsen as its leader, [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] awarding him 44 of the 65 votes. [7] [8] [9] On 4 December 2014 his party,Atassut,and Demokraatit formed a new coalition. On 10 December 2014 the new ministers were represented. [10]
In response to U.S. President Donald Trump's August 2019 interest in purchasing Greenland,Kielsen said the proposal was "not something to joke about",and "Greenland is not Danish. Greenland is Greenlandic. I persistently hope that this is not something that is seriously meant." [11] [12]
On November 29,2020,Kielsen lost reelection to the chairmanship of the Siumut Party to Erik Jensen. [13] [14]
Kim Kielsen is married to Judithe Kielsen,and they have two children. [15]
The Inatsisartut,also known as the Parliament of Greenland in English,is the unicameral parliament of Greenland,an autonomous territory in the Danish Realm. Established in 1979,it meets in Inatsisartut,on the islet of Nuuk Center in central Nuuk.
The Football Association of Greenland (KAK) is the governing body of association football in the island country of Greenland. The KAK was founded on 4 July 1971. Aleqa Hammond is a Greenlandic politician and former member of the Danish Folketing (parliament). Formerly the leader of the Siumut party,she became Greenland's first female prime minister after her party emerged as the largest parliamentary faction in the 2013 elections. In 2014 she stepped down as prime minister and leader of Siumut,following a case of misuse of public funds. She was expelled from Siumut on 23 August 2016 after yet another case of misuse of public funds and became an independent. On 31 March 2018 she announced that she would be running in the 2018 Greenlandic parliamentary election for the Siumut breakaway Nunatta Qitornai.
The Inuit Party was a separatist party in Greenland,formed by dissidents from the then-governing Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA). The party was opposed to the so-called big-scale law,and wanted a referendum on the law. Mette Lynge represented the party in the Naalakkersuisut (Government) and was minister for dwellings,nature and environment. At the 2014 Greenlandic general election,the party did not win any seats in parliament.
General elections were held in the Kingdom of Denmark on 5 June 2019 to elect all 179 members of the Folketing;175 in Denmark proper,two in the Faroe Islands and two in Greenland. The elections took place ten days after the European Parliament elections.
Atassut is a liberal-conservative and unionist political party in Greenland. Founded on 29 April 1978,Atassut is an established partner of the Liberal Party of Denmark.
General elections were held in Greenland on 24 April 2018,electing all 31 members of Parliament. The elections were required to be held no later than 26 November 2018,four years after the previous elections on 27 November 2014,but Prime Minister Kim Kielsen chose to call the elections seven months early. His Siumut party remained the largest in Parliament,but lost two seats,whilst Inuit Ataqatigiit,the second-largest party,lost three seats. The smaller Democrats and Partii Naleraq gained seats,with the newly formed Cooperation Party and Nunatta Qitornai parties both entering Parliament.
Nunatta Qitornai is a separatist political party in Greenland advocating independence. It was founded in September 2017 by former Minister of Business,Labour,Trade and Foreign Affairs Vittus Qujaukitsoq,who had previously been in Siumut and who was subsequently elected in the 2018 Greenlandic parliamentary elections. In the 2021 elections the party lost its seat.
Doris J. Jensen,also Doris Jakobsen,is a Greenlandic politician in the Siumut or Forward party. A former member of the Danish Folketing (2011–2015),she became an elected member of the Parliament of Greenland in 2002. In April 2018,she was appointed Minister of Health and Research in the Naalakkersuisut.
Aki-Matilda Tilia Ditte Høegh-Dam is a Danish-Greenlandic politician,who is a member of the Folketing for the Siumut political party. She was elected into parliament at the 2019 Danish general election,entering parliament at 22 years old,becoming its youngest member.
Vittus Qujaukitsoq is a Greenlandic politician. Qujaukitsoq was appointed as Minister of Finance and Interior of Aleqa Hammond cabinet from May 2013 to November 2014. After November 2014 to 2017 Qujaukitsoq was Minister of Industry,Labour,Trade and Foreign Affairs of Kim Kielsen cabinet. After disagreements on complaint to United Nations for environmental restoration of former U.S. Military installations in Greenland. He was previously a member of Siumut,and served as Minister of Industry,Labour,Trade and Foreign Affairs,caretaker as Minister of Finance and Foreign Affairs on two occasions during 2014-2017 in the Kielsen government.
The seventh Cabinet of Kim Kielsen was the Government of Greenland in office from 29 May 2020 to 8 February 2021. It was a coalition minority government consisting of Siumut,the Democrats and Nunatta Qitornai.
Múte Inequnaaluk Bourup Egede is a Greenlandic politician serving as the seventh prime minister of Greenland,a position he has held since April 2021. He has served as a member of the Inatsisartut,the parliament of Greenland,since 2015,and furthermore as chairman of the Inuit Ataqatigiit party since 2018.
Erik Jensen is a Greenlandic politician currently serving as the leader of Siumut and the former Minister of Mineral Resources and Labor. He is a strong proponent of the Greenland independence movement.
Snap general elections were held in Greenland on 6 April 2021 alongside local elections. Inuit Ataqatigiit emerged as the largest party,winning 12 of the 31 seats in the Inatsisartut. The governing Siumut party finished second with 10 seats.
Pele Broberg is a Greenlandic politician (Naleraq),entrepreneur and pilot. He became minister of foreign affairs,trade,climate and business in April 2021,but foreign affairs and climate were transferred to the premier of Greenland Múte Bourup Egede in September 2021 after a controversy. Broberg was minister for finance in 2018.
