Jonathan Jakob Jørgen Otto Motzfeldt was a Greenlandic priest and politician. He is considered one of the leading figures in the establishment of Greenland Home Rule. Jonathan Motzfeldt was the first prime minister of Greenland. He was Greenland's prime minister from 1979 until 1991 and again from 1997 until 2002. He was Greenland's longest serving prime minister and won the most elections of any prime minister of Greenland. He is considered a Centre-left politician and Greenland became a recognized country during his tenure.

The West Nordic Council is a cooperation forum of the parliaments and governments of Greenland,the Faroe Islands,and Iceland. It was initially founded in 1985 as the West Nordic Parliamentarian Council of Cooperation but the name was changed in 1997. The council comprises six MPs from each nation appointed by their respective parliaments. The annual general meeting of the council rotates between the members and is its highest authority. The work and activities of the Council are organized by a three-member presidium of which the president of the council is a member. The August 2017 to September 2018 president was Kári P. Højgaard.
Greenland Medal for Meritorious Service,is awarded by the Greenland Home Rule government. It is the highest award based in Greenland. The medal was instituted on 1 May 1989 in connection with the ten-year anniversary of the Greenlandic home rule. The medal is awarded for meritorious service for Greenland in fields such as public service,business,art,or science. The medal is worn in a ribbon of the Greenlandic colours;red symbolising the sun and white symbolising the snow. The medal is awarded in two grades:gold and silver.

In January 2008,she became the first female speaker of the Inatsisartut or Parliament of Greenland. The Parliament honoured her in April 2016 with the Nersornaat (gold),a medal for meritorious service,for a political career lasting over 20 years.
