Kristian Thulesen Dahl (born 30 July 1969) is a Danish director and former politician who served as Leader of the Danish People's Party (DPP) from 2012 to 2022. He was a Member of the Folketing (MF) from September 1994 until July 2022, [1] [2] first representing Fremskridtspartiet until 6 October 1995 and then the DPP from that date until 29 June 2022, [3] [4] when he became an independent. [5]
He became leader of the Danish People's Party in 2012,following Pia Kjærsgaard's retirement from the post. He is a Knight of the Dannebrog. [3]
Kristian Thulesen Dahl is also the brother of fellow MF Jens Henrik Thulesen Dahl.
Thulesen Dahl's first period in parliament was as a temporary member from 7 October 1993 to 24 October 1993. Following this he ran in the 1994 Danish general election for the Progress Party. He was elected into parliament,but switched to the Danish People's Party during the term,on 6 October 1995. Thuelsen Dahl also entered the municipal council of Give Municipality from 1997 to 2006,and Vejle Municipality from 2006 to 2010. [3] [6]
In 2012,after Pia Kjærsgaard's resignment,he was elected chairman of the Danish People's Party. In 2014,a poll of Danish right wing voters showed that Thulesen Dahl was more popular as a possible candidate for Prime Minister than any other leader of the Danish right wing parties,including current Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. He,however,did not consider himself a candidate for that post. [7]
In the 2015 Danish general elections,Thulesen's first election as party leader,his party won 37 of 179 seats in parliament becoming the second largest party. Thulesen Dahl received more than 57,000 personal votes. While his party became the largest in the right wing bloc,and he was much more popular than Venstre's candidate for Prime Minister,Lars Løkke Rasmussen,he refused that he was in play as a possible Prime Minister of Denmark. Thulesen did not stand in the 2022 Danish general election as he had gotten a job as the director of the port of Aalborg,his first job outside politics in 28 years. [10]
In 2013,Thulesen Dahl argued that Denmark to a larger extent should accept more refugees coming from non-Muslim countries and fewer from Muslim countries. In the same interview,he declared himself a supporter of freedom of religion,thus a Dane who wishes to convert to Islam is free to do so,however,he also stated that he believes that there is no room in Denmark for more people with a Muslim background. Lars Løkke Rasmussen is a Danish politician who has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2022. He previously served as the 25th Prime Minister of Denmark from 2009 to 2011 and again from 2015 to 2019. He was the leader of the liberal Venstre party from 2009 to 2019.Rasmussen has been a member of the Folketing since 21 September 1994. He also served as County Mayor of Frederiksborg County from 1998 to 2001. Subsequently,he was the Interior and Health Minister from 27 November 2001 to 23 November 2007 as part of Anders Fogh Rasmussen's first and second cabinets,and then Minister of Finance from 23 November 2007 to April 2009 as part of Anders Fogh Rasmussen's third cabinet. On 5 April 2009,he succeeded Anders Fogh Rasmussen as prime minister following the latter's appointment as Secretary General of NATO.In the 2011 general election,the government lost its parliamentary majority and Rasmussen tendered the government's resignation to Queen Margrethe II. He was succeeded by Helle Thorning-Schmidt of the Social Democrats on 3 October 2011. In the 2015 general election,the right-wing parties regained a majority in the Folketing. Rasmussen again became prime minister and formed his second cabinet in the same month. This cabinet was made up exclusively of Venstre members,but in November 2016 he was pressured to also include members of Liberal Alliance and Conservative People's Party,forming his third cabinet.On 6 June 2019,he resigned from his position as prime minister after a general election,in which his government was defeated. However,he continued to lead a caretaker government until a new government was formed and sworn in. This was completed on 27 June 2019 and Rasmussen was succeeded as prime minister by Mette Frederiksen. He resigned as the chairman of Venstre in August 2019,and left the party in January 2021. He subsequently formed the Moderates,which campaigned on ending bloc politics,and won 16 seats in the 2022 Danish general election.

Of the 179 members of the Folketing,175 were elected in Denmark proper,two in the Faroes and two in Greenland. The elections were called on 5 October following an ultimatum to the government by the Social Liberals due to the outcome of a report on the 2020 Danish mink cull by the Mink Commission,which was critical of the government. Voter turnout was 84% in Denmark,48% in Greenland,and 71% in the Faroes,with a combined turnout of 84% for the realm as a whole.

The Moderates is a liberal political party in Denmark founded by former Prime Minister and current Minister of Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen. He announced the name in a foundational speech on 5 June 2021. At the same time,he said that his main scenario was that the party would be formed after the 2021 Danish local elections. The name was,according to Rasmussen,inspired by the fictitious Prime Minister Birgitte Nyborg's party Moderaterne in the hit political TV drama Borgen as well as the Swedish Moderate Party,the then–second largest party in the Swedish Riksdag. In November 2022,he became a member of the Folketing for the Nye Borgerlige (NB) party,but in January 2023 changed his party allegiance to the Danish People's Party (DF).
