Alex Dominique Kristensen Vanopslagh (born 17 October 1991) [1] is a French-born Danish politician. He is a member of the Folketing,and party leader of the Liberal Alliance. He is a former chairman of its youth wing,Liberal Alliance Youth.
Alex Vanopslagh,who was born in Épernay,France,moved to Denmark when he was five,and grew up in Struer. [2] In 2009 he moved to Herning and in 2011 he completed high school. He originally wanted to be a journalist,but applied and failed the entrance exam to the Danish Media and Journalism School in Aarhus after taking the wrong bus. [3] He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, [1] and a master's degree from the University of Copenhagen in 2016. [1]
In 2014,he was elected leader of Liberal Alliance Youth,succeeding Rasmus Brygger. He was reelected in 2015 and did not stand for reelection in 2016. [2]
In autumn 2016,he was selected as lead candidate for the Liberal Alliance in the 2017 Copenhagen Municipality elections,and won a seat in the Copenhagen Municipal Council with 3,563 votes. [4] [5]
In the 2019 general election,Vanopslagh was elected to the Folketing representing West Jutland constituency. [6] The election was catastrophic for the Liberal Alliance,which lost nine of thirteen seats and its leader Anders Samuelsen failing to be reelected. Following the defeat,Samuelsen resigned as leader of the party,and was succeeded by Vanopslagh. [7] [8] [9]
Vanopslagh has been a prominent critic of Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and her government,due to alleged attacks on fundamental institutions,rights and common sense. [10] He has referred to Frederiksen as "the worst news for our democracy and justice state since World War II". [11] [12] During the mink case,Vanopslagh called for Frederiksen to resign [13] and criticized the Social Liberal Party for supposedly letting Frederiksen off the hook. [14]
Under Vanopslagh,the Liberal Alliance has seen a major rise in popularity,especially during campaigning for the 2022 Danish general election. [15] Much of Vanopslagh's campaigning has occurred on social media,in particular TikTok;he has been referred to as "The King of TikTok". [16] This campaigning is targeted primarily towards young voters,among whom Liberal Alliance is one of the most popular parties. [17]
Vanopslagh led his party into the 2022 election,which resulted in the best result for the party ever. The party gained 10 new seats compared to the last election. In East Jutland Vanopslagh received 38,284 personal votes. [5] In March 2024 polls the party reached 2nd place.
There are three types of elections in Denmark:elections to the national parliament,local elections,and elections to the European Parliament. Referendums may also be called to consult the Danish citizenry directly on an issue of national concern.
The Liberal Alliance is a classical liberal and right-libertarian political party in Denmark. The party is a component of the centre-right bloc in Danish politics. Nye Borgerlige is a national-conservative and right-wing populist political party in Denmark. Formed by Pernille Vermund and Peter Seier Christensen in 2015,the party first entered the Danish Parliament,the Folketing,in 2019 with four seats and again in 2022 with six. After three defections in the first months after the election,by March 2023 the party's number of seats in the Folketing was reduced to three.
General elections were held in the Kingdom of Denmark on 1 November 2022,except in the Faroe Islands,where they were held on 31 October as 1 November was a national day of mourning for victims at sea. Of the 179 members of the Folketing,175 were elected in Denmark proper,two in the Faroes and two in Greenland. The elections were called on 5 October following an ultimatum to the government by the Social Liberals due to the outcome of a report on the 2020 Danish mink cull by the Mink Commission,which was critical of the government. Voter turnout was 84% in Denmark,48% in Greenland,and 71% in the Faroes,with a combined turnout of 84% for the realm as a whole.
Ann Pernille Vermund Bretton-Meyer is a Danish architect (MAA) and politician,being a member of the Folketing since 2019. She is known for co-founding and being the leader of the national-conservative political party Nye Borgerlige from its founding in 2015 until February 2023 and again from October 2023 to January 2024. On 10 January 2024,she surprisingly announced that she had left Nye Borgerlige,recommending its dissolution. A week later,she joined the parliamentary group of the Liberal Alliance.
The Frederiksen I Cabinet took office on 27 June 2019 and succeeded the Lars Løkke Rasmussen III Cabinet following the 2019 Danish general election. Headed by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen,it was a minority government consisting of the Social Democrats. Mette Thiesen is a Danish politician and former schoolteacher who has been a member of the Folketing since June 2019,at first representing the Nye Borgerlige political party,but from November 2022 being an independent,and from February 2023 representing the Danish People's Party.
The Moderates is a liberal political party in Denmark founded by former Prime Minister and current Minister of Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen. He announced the name in a foundational speech on 5 June 2021. At the same time,he said that his main scenario was that the party would be formed after the 2021 Danish local elections. The name was,according to Rasmussen,inspired by the fictitious Prime Minister Birgitte Nyborg's party Moderaterne in the hit political TV drama Borgen as well as the Swedish Moderate Party,the then–second largest party in the Swedish Riksdag. The Moderates' political position is referred to as centre to centre-right.
The Mink Commission formally the Commission of Inquiry into the Case of the Culling of Mink is a Danish investigative commission set up by a majority in the Folketing in 2020 to investigate The Mink Case;the culling of all minks in Denmark during the COVID-19 pandemic. It began its work on 23 April 2021. The commission consists of national judge Michael Kistrup,who is chairman,as well as law professor Helle Krunke from the University of Copenhagen and lawyer Ole Spiermann from the firm Bruun &Hjejle.
The 2020 Danish mink cull was the government-mandated slaughter of all roughly 17 million mink that were being raised on farms for their fur in Denmark. The cull started in September in response to the detection of Cluster 5,an outbreak of a novel variant of SARS-CoV-2,in the mink during the COVID-19 pandemic in Denmark. The cluster led to concerns that the potential of spillover to humans could reduce the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines. The cull was made nation-wide on 4 November 2020;however,two days later the government announced that the extension of the cull orders had been given without legal authority,causing a political scandal,also known as the "Mink Case". Around 150,000 mink were culled without authority before the problem was identified.
