Kumar Suvarana Chandrak or the Kumar Gold Medal is a literary award given by Kumar Trust, Ahmedabad, India since 1944. The medal is annually conferred to a Gujarati author for his contribution in Kumar magazine published by Kumar Trust. In 1950, Chandravadan Mehta refused to accept Kumar Chandrak. [1] [2]

History

The medal was established in 1944, by Yashwant Pandya, an author contributing to Kumar. Initially, Gujarati authors Balwantray Thakore, Vishnuprasad Trivedi and Sundaram had served in a committee for the selection of awardee. Subsequently Ramnarayan V. Pathak and Anantrai Raval served on the committee. From 1983 to 2002, there is no expressed declaration of this medal, but from 2003 it has been started again. It was renamed from Kumar Chandrak (Kumar Medal) to Kumar Suvarna Chandrak (Kumar Gold Medal) in 2003. [1] [2] [3]

The Premanand Suvarna Chandrak or Premanand Gold Medal is a literary honour awarded every two years, though sometimes annually, to an established Gujarati writer in order to recognize and promote excellence in Gujarati writing. It is given by an institute of literature, the Premanand Sahitya Bhavan of Vadodara, in remembrance of the Gujarati poet with which it shares its name, Premanand Bhatt. Established in 1916 as the Gujarati Sahitya Sabha and renamed to be the Premanand Sahitya Bhavan in 1944, the organization and institute started this medal in 1983.

Each year, the medal is awarded to the author of the most outstanding book written in the Gujarati language.

His significant works include Avaajnu Ajavalu, Samudi, Motiba and Adhakhuli Baari. He was awarded the Narmad Suvarna Chandrak award for his book Motiba.

<i>Trun No Grah</i>

Trun No Grah is a collection of poems written in Gujarati by Natwarlal Kuberdas Pandya, better known by his pen name 'Ushnas.' The book received the Narmad Suvarna Chandrak in 1963. It is considered one of the finest works of poetry in Gujarati literature.

Radheshyam Sharma was a Gujarati language poet, novelist, short story writer, critic and compiler from the state of Gujarat, India. His other significant works include Aansu Ane Chandaranu (1963), and Gujarati Navalkatha, a work of literary criticism on Gujarati novels. Sharma was awarded the Gujarati literary honours Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak, in 2004, and Dhanji Kanji Gandhi Suvarna Chandrak, in 1995.

Jayant Himmatlal Pathak was a Gujarati poet and literary critic from Gujarat, India. He was the president of the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad from 1990 – 1991. He received several awards, including the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Kumar Suvarna Chandrak, the Narmad Suvarna Chandrak, the Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak and the Uma-Snehrashmi Prize. The Jayant Pathak Poetry Award is named after him.
