Kyle Walker is an American politician serving as a member of the Indiana Senate from Senate District 31. He assumed office on November 17,2020.
A native of Indianapolis,Walker graduated from Lawrence North High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business management from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2005. [1]
In 2007 and 2008,Walker worked as executive director of the Marion County Republican Central Committee. In 2008 and 2009,he worked as deputy director of the Indianapolis Department of Public Works for policy and planning. He also worked as the business development manager of Commonwealth Engineers,an engineering consulting firm. He served as chair of the Marion County Republican Central Committee from 2010 to 2015 and founded his own consulting company in 2010.
Walker was elected to the Indiana Senate by a caucus of Precinct Committee representatives to fill a vacancy in November 2020. [2]
During the 2021 legislative session,Walker sponsored legislation creating the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force to allow regional law enforcement agencies to work together to track guns used to commit crimes across Central Indiana and help bring more violent criminals to justice. [3] Since its creation,the Task Force has seized 369 illegal firearms leading to the arrests of 397 violent criminals. [4]
During the 2022 legislative session,Walker supported a $1.1 billion income tax cut for Hoosiers. [5] He authored several bills to improve public safety,including legislation to strengthen electronic monitoring of offenders so they can't go on to commit additional crimes. [6] He also authored economic development legislation to help Indiana communities attract sports,tourism and convention events. [7] Walker also led a bipartisan effort to help Indiana foster youth access and afford a driver's license and car insurance. [8]
In his campaign for re-election,Walker has been endorsed by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce [9] and the Indy Chamber BAC for his support of pro-business policies. [10] Walker has also been endorsed by several state and local law enforcement and first responder organizations,including the Indiana State Fraternal Order of Police,the Indiana Fire Chiefs Association and the Indiana Professional Firefighters PAC [11] as well as the Fishers Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 199 and the Lawrence Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 159. [12] Walker has also received endorsements from labor unions including the Indiana AFL-CIO and the Indiana State Pipe Trades Association. [13]
In March 2022,he voted against a bill that would repeal Indiana's requirement for a permit to carry a handgun in public places. [14] In August 2022,Walker voted against a near total abortion ban in Indiana, [15] after he expressed his opposition in July to a first trimester ban without reasonable exceptions for rape,incest,health of the mother and cases of fatal fetal anomaly. [16]
During the 2023 legislative session,Walker authored a bill that extended the Foster Care Support Tax Credit to those who made donations to the Foster Youth Trust Fund. [17] The bill also allows foster families to visit state parks at no cost,an idea proposed by a Girl Scout troop in Senate District 31. [18] That same year,Walker authored a bill that directed the Statewide 911 Board to conduct a feasibility study on ways to improve Indiana’s computer aided dispatch (CAD) systems and ensure that the closest first responders are reached during an emergency regardless of county lines. [19]
Walker also led the effort to secure funding for the Sports and Tourism Bid Fund included in the biennial budget. The fund aids Indiana communities by providing additional resources to apply for and host major sports,tourism and convention events. [20]
During the 2024 legislative session,Walker authored a bill that extended eligibility for Medicare supplement insurance for Indiana residents suffering from ALS or end stage renal disease and offers additional cost savings for these individuals,many of whom are in or are nearing end-of-life care. [21]
Walker also sponsored a bill that brought back happy hours after a nearly 40-year ban. He claimed that the legislation would help restaurants attract more patrons and assist an industry that is still struggling with the losses of the global pandemic. [22]
Theodore Edward Rokita is an American lawyer and politician serving as the 44th and current Attorney General of Indiana. He served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from Indiana's 4th congressional district from 2011 to 2019. A member of the Republican Party,he served two terms as Secretary of State of Indiana from 2002 to 2010. When Rokita was elected to office in 2002 at age 32,he became the youngest secretary of state in the United States at the time.

In February 2011,a series of public employee protests began in the United States against proposed legislation which would weaken the power of labor unions. By March,eighteen states had proposed legislation which would remove some collective bargaining powers from unions,along with another five states which proposed legislation which would negatively affect unions. The protests occurred when public employee unions mounted protests against legislation proposed by Republican governors such as Scott Walker (Wisconsin),Rick Scott (Florida),Mitch Daniels (Indiana),Sean Parnell (Alaska),Rick Snyder (Michigan),John Kasich (Ohio),Paul LePage (Maine) and Jan Brewer (Arizona) which,among other things,would strip public employees of some collective bargaining rights as well as require higher employee contributions to pension and health care plans. The governors stated they needed these changes in order to cut state spending and balance the states' budgets. The protests began in Wisconsin,then spread to Indiana and Ohio,with unions around the country rallying to show their opposition to the proposed legislation. Several other states considered similar legislation. Virginia,North Carolina,and Texas prohibit formal collective bargaining with public employees.
Katrina Frye Shealy is an American politician,and a member of the South Carolina State Senate. She is a Republican but was elected as a petition candidate from District 23 in Lexington County. At the time of her election in 2012,she was the only woman in the South Carolina Senate and in May of 2023,was one of six women serving in the South Carolina State Senate. She was defeated in a runoff in 2024.

General Ordinance 34 of the Indianapolis-Marion County City-County Council is a local ordinance,passed in July 2023,that would enact various gun control measures within Indianapolis and Marion County if permitted by the Indiana state legislature. The ordinance's measures were proposed by Mayor Joe Hogsett's administration,and it was passed by the Democratic-controlled council. The passage took place during a mayoral election season,in which rising violent crime rates were a key election issue,and crime and gun control were a source of considerable debate locally and beyond.
