Vaneta Becker (October 9,1949) is an American politician who serves as a Republican Senator in the Indiana Senate representing Senate District 50,which contains portions of Vanderburgh and Warrick County [3] in the southern part of the state. She sits on the Health and Provider Services Committee and chairs its Public Health Subcommittee [3] having moved on from the Chairmanship of the Provider Services Subcommittee. [4] She is the ranking member of the standing committee on Commerce,Public Policy and Interstate Cooperation. [3]
Becker graduated from North High School in Evansville and received her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Southern Indiana. She has been a real estate broker in Southwestern Indiana since 1975. Her husband,Andy Guarino, [3] was a principal with Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation. He retired in 2013.
Becker was first elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 1981 and served until 2005. [3] She replaced Greg Server who was elevated to the Indiana Senate. [5] She sits on numerous Interim Study Committees:the Evansville State Hospital Advisory Committee,Indiana Commission on Excellence in Health Care,Health and Child Care Issues Evaluation Committee,Health Finance Commission,Indiana Commission for Women,and the Prescription Drug Advisory Committee.
When Server was named to the Mitch Daniels administration,Becker was elected by a party caucus to replace him. Suzanne Crouch replaced her in the House.
When not in Indianapolis directly serving in the General Assembly,Senator Becker sits on the Board of Directors for the ARK Crisis Prevention Nursery and is involved with the Leadership Evansville Alumni.
She is a Co-Chair on the Advisory Board of the Office of Women's Health through the Indiana State Department of Health. Vaneta is also a member of the American Heart Association and the United Methodist Church.
In December 2011,Becker made headlines when she proposed legislation that set standards for the performance of the national anthem,including a fine of $25 to be levied against any individual that makes deliberate changes to the song. [6]
Rupert Vance Hartke was an American politician who served as a Democratic United States Senator from Indiana from 1959 until 1977. Hartke won election to the Senate after serving as the mayor of Evansville,Indiana. In the Senate,he supported the Great Society and became a prominent opponent of the Vietnam War. Hartke ran for president in the 1972 Democratic primaries but withdrew after the first set of primaries. He left the Senate after being defeated in his 1976 re-election campaign by Richard Lugar.
Julia May Carson was an American politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives for Indiana's 7th congressional district from 1997 until she died in 2007. Carson was the first woman and first African American to represent Indianapolis in the U.S. Congress. She was also the second African American woman elected to Congress from Indiana,after Katie Hall,and her grandson AndréCarson succeeded to her seat following her death.

Suzanne Crouch is an American politician who has served as the 52nd lieutenant governor of Indiana since 2017. She previously served as the 56th state auditor of Indiana from 2014 to 2017. In 2024 she ran for governor of Indiana,losing the primary election to U.S. Senator Mike Braun.

When Rokita was elected to office in 2002 at age 32,he became the youngest secretary of state in the United States at the time.
Sallie Wyatt Stewart was an American educator and a social services organizer for the black community in Evansville,Indiana,who is best known for her leadership in local,state,and national black women’s clubs. Stewart served as president of the Indiana Federation of Colored Women from 1921 to 1928 and succeeded Mary McLeod Bethune as president of the National Association of Colored Women from 1928 to 1933. During her term as the IFCW's president,Stewart launched "The Hoosier Woman",a monthly newsletter that served as the organization's official publication. Among her accomplishments as the NACW's president was the founding in 1930 of the National Association of Colored Girls. In addition,Stewart was a delegate in 1930 to the International Council of Women in Vienna,Austria,and fourth vice president of the National Council of Women of the United States. She also served a trustee and secretary of the Frederick Douglass Memorial and Historical Association,a member of the executive committee of the National Negro Business League,a member of the executive committee of the National Colored Merchants Association,and a teacher in the Evansville public schools for more than fifty years.

Arcada Stark Balz was an American educator,clubwoman,and politician in the state of Indiana who became the first woman elected to the Indiana Senate,serving two consecutive four-year terms from 1943 to 1950 and representing Johnson and Marion Counties.
