Originally scheduled to be held in 2021, the championships were pushed back one year to be held from 13-29 May 2022 in response to the rescheduling of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo to 2021, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was then postponed a second time to year 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation like travel restrictions and the measures currently in place in Japan.
