Lalla Rookh was a clipper/brig variously recorded as 184 tons [1] and 147 tons, [2] built in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland in 1848. She was described as one of the "new Aberdeen clippers". [3]
She took settlers to the colony of Natal (now part of South Africa) in 65 days, the fastest passage thus far achieved. [3] She was used for trading among the Australian colonies, including several journeys between Port Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastle, New South Wales. [4]
She left Deal, Kent under Captain Henderson for Port Natal on 24 February 1849. [5]
Lalla Rookh, described as a 155/6-ton brig, was recorded under Captain P. Milner arriving from Mauritius in January 1850, [6] is subsequently mentioned in several shipping reports in New South Wales and Victoria until late 1852 [7] [8] [9] and in 1853 under Captain Twomey (one to Wellington, New Zealand). [10] [11] A few passengers are listed for all of these voyages.
In October 1856 she sailed from Sydney in ballast (empty of cargo) to Calcutta under Captain Orr, [12] and is shown arriving from Calcutta on 2 March 1857, [13] with goods including patna rice. [14] She traded the East Indies, Mauritius and West Coast(?) for a period, the ship was advertised for sale in the Geelong Advertiser in May 1859, after having been overhauled, refitted and recoppered. Her tonnage at this time was "184 tons register, 270 burden". [1]
She departed for Fiji in October 1859, [15] and is recorded as arriving in Hobson's Bay, Melbourne, in April 1860. [16] On 19 November 1860 the brig, sailing under a New Zealand flag, was driven ashore and damaged at Port Albert, Victoria, on a voyage from Wellington to Melbourne, but was able to be refloated. In May 1865 she left Sydney for the South Sea Islands, [18] and in December 1868 for New Caledonia. [19]
According to the Australasian Underwater Cultural Heritage Database (AUCHD), after catching fire on 30 November 1897, Lalla Rookh (then registered in Sydney) was broken up in 1898 at Kerosene Bay (now Balls Head Bay) in Sydney Harbour. The AUCHD record describes her as a 147-ton brig, 29.9 metres (98 ft) long. [2] However, in April 1898 Lalla Rookh was reported as having sunk in 25 feet (7.6 m) of water after striking a dolphin near the head of Darling Harbour. Before this she had been used as a lighter in the coal trade up and down the coast, owned by a Mr Byrnes. Her tonnage was reported as 220 tons in this report. [20]
His Majesty's colonial brig Elizabeth Henrietta was completed in 1816 for New South Wales service, but capsized on the Hunter River, Australia later that year with the loss of two lives. The ship was wrecked in 1825.
Elizabeth Reef, located at 29°57′25″S159°4′32″E, is a coral reef in the Coral Sea. The reef is separated by a deep oceanic pass, some 47 km wide, from nearby Middleton Reef, both of which are part of the underwater plateau known as the Lord Howe Rise. It is around 150 km from Lord Howe Island and 600 km from the New South Wales coast of Australia. The Environment, Sport and Territories Legislation Amendment Act 1997 included Elizabeth Reef in Australia's Coral Sea Islands Territory.
Balls Head Bay, formerly known as Oyster Cove, Wollstonecraft Bay,Sugarworks Bay, Powder Works Bay and Kerosene Bay, is a bay located to the west of the Waverton Peninsula, west of Balls Head and to the east of Berry Island, on the north of Sydney Harbour, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
Marchioness was a brigantine built at Waterford, Ireland in 1851 and registered at Melbourne that sailed between Nelson, New Zealand and Melbourne, Australia in the 1850s. It foundered on rocks off the Taranaki coast in 1864 and was lost with no loss of life, having previously grounded twice, once off the coast of Victoria, Australia, and once in Cook Strait.

Lalla Rookh was a barque of 372 tons built by Edward Allen in St Helier, Jersey, in 1939. Her dimensions were 99.9 x 24.0 x 16.8 ft.
Lalla Rookh was an iron three-masted barque, 841 tons, built in 1876 by R & J Evans and Co. in Liverpool and originally owned by E. C. Friend and Co. In 1905 she was sold to Norwegian owners, and in 1916 her name was changed to Effendi. From March 1923 or 1924 she was based in Finland, renamed Karhu, before reverting to her original name in 1926. She was broken up in Bruges, Belgium, in 1928.
Lalla Rookh was an Australian wooden two-masted ketch, also sometimes referred to as a schooner, 59 tons. She was built on the Bellinger River in New South Wales in 1875, and named after Lalla Rookh, the first sizeable ship to visit Brisbane. The ketch Lalla Rookh was first registered in Townsville, Queensland, by Aplin Brown & Company.
Louis Australia Whyte was an Australian amateur tennis player and golfer. He won the Intercolonial Lawn Tennis Championships twice, in 1881 and 1883. In golf he won the Victorian Golf Cup in 1894 and the Australian Amateur in 1900.
Lalla Rookh was a square-rigged, iron-hulled tea clipper of 869 tons, built in 1856 in Liverpool, Lancashire, owned by William Prowse & Co. and said to travel fast. She was used for trade with India and China, and was advertised in 1871 as a packet ship to take passengers to Australia. She was completely wrecked at Prawle Point, Devon on 3 March 1873, with the loss of one crew member and all of her cargo of tea and tobacco.
Lalla Rookh was a 380-ton sailing vessel, possibly a brig and most likely built in 1823. She traded in North and South America, and transported a steam engine to New South Wales and a detachment of troops to Brisbane in 1825. She later traded and carried passengers between the East Indies, India and Britain. She was under the command of Captain Green until November 1827, when she came under the command of Captain McCallum, and was wrecked at Pondicherry on 6 March 1828.
Lalla Rookh was a wooden sailing vessel, 333 tons, built by Thomas Metcalfe & Son in South Shields, "rigged as a Snow", meaning that, unlike a normal brig, she had an extra lower square sail on the main mast, which provided additional power. She was completed in March 1825 and owned by Thomas & John Fenwick of North Shields.
