Alofa Dawn Latafale Auva'a, [1] better known as Latafale Auva'a (born June 8, 1993) is a Samoan-New Zealander beauty pageant titleholder. She is the first woman to hold four Pacific regional titles by winning Miss Samoa New Zealand 2014, Miss Samoa 2014, Miss Pacific Islands 2014 and Miss World Samoa 2015. [2]

Early life

Auva'a was born in Papakura, New Zealand to a Samoan father and English mother. [3] [4] She graduated from King's College as Deputy Head and also received the University of Auckland's Top Pacific Chancellor Award. [5] Auva'a opted to attend the University of Otago where she studied both Law and Music. [6]

Personal life

In 2018, Auva'a was bestowed a Samoan chief (Matai) title at a ceremony in Vaitele, Samoa. She is also a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand. [7]

New Zealand has contested 46 Miss World pageants since that pageant's inception in 1951. No New Zealander has won the Miss World title, although two have placed first runner-up.

Miss Island Queen is a faʻafafine pageant held annually in American Samoa. It is noted for being the longest standing pageant of its kind in the South Pacific. It was first held in 1979 before undergoing a series of changes. No pageant was held in 1980 and 1982 as it endured shifts in ownership and in 2020 and 2022 due to the covid pandemic. It was canceled in 1986 due to a tropical cyclone and failed to take place in both 1999 and 2002 when it struggled with funding. In 1996 It was held simultaneously on the same evening as another faʻafafine pageant Empress of Samoa. In 2008 the pageant coincided with the Festival of Pacific Arts and became the closing event of festivities. After undergoing extensive reestablishment in 2010 the pageant has since been held during Flag Day week and broadcast live on KVZK-2. It is now known as Miss SOFIAS and maintains yearly advocacy and charity programs.
