Lawrence Langowski Mendoza (born June 11, 1985) is a former Olympic wrestler from Chicago. Langowski competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics for Mexico in freestyle wrestling at 120KG. [1]
Langowski was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. His father is Polish-American and his mother is from Mexico City. Lawrence attended Gordon Tech High School, where he graduated second in his class and earned varsity letters in football, wrestling, and track and field. While studying at Gordon Tech, Langowski received numerous academic honors and athletic awards, including wrestling achievements at the state and national levels. Larry received a B.A. in Psychology from Northwestern University.
After graduating from Gordon Tech High School, Langowski attended Northwestern University in Evanston, where he signed onto the wrestling team as a recruited walk-on. Larry wrestled at the Division I (NCAA) level from 2003-2006 and earned Academic All Big-Ten Conference and Dean's List Honors. While at Northwestern he suffered a potentially career-ending injury but recovered to compete at elite levels of international competition. [2]
In 2004 Lawrence was invited by the Mexican Olympic Committee to participate in international wrestling competition. He competed in the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio and is a 3X FILA Senior World Team Member. Langowski competed in the 120 kg freestyle division at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, after earning qualification at the 2008 FILA Pan American Wrestling Championships in Colorado Springs. He was the Mexico's sole representation in wrestling at the Olympics. He also became the first Mexican wrestler to compete at the Olympics since the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and one of three athletes to represent Mexico in freestyle wrestling at the Olympic level. Langowski lost to Iran's Fardin Masoumi, a World Silver and Bronze medalist. [2]
After the Olympics, Langowski volunteered for Chicago's 2016 Olympic bid as an athlete ambassador and liaison to the Hispanic community. After Chicago 2016 dissolved he worked with World Sport Chicago, Chicago 2016's legacy organization, to impact inner-city at-risk youth in the Chicago Public Schools system through sport.
In 2010 the U.S. State Department selected Lawrence to the Fulbright Program, a prestigious international fellowship. Langowski moved to Mexico City to serve as a fellow at Endeavor, a non-profit focused on developing entrepreneurship in emerging economies, and to study business at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM). Freestyle wrestling is a style of amateur wrestling that is practiced throughout the world. Along with Greco-Roman, it is one of the two styles of wrestling contested in the Olympic games. American high school and college wrestling is conducted under different rules and is termed scholastic and collegiate wrestling.
United World Wrestling (UWW) is the international governing body for the sport of amateur wrestling; its duties include overseeing wrestling at the Olympics. It presides over international competitions for various forms of wrestling, including Greco-Roman wrestling, freestyle wrestling for men and women, as well as others. The flagship event of UWW is the Wrestling World Championships. It was formerly known as the FILA, having assumed its current name in September 2014.
Wrestling competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, were held at the China Agricultural University Gymnasium from 12–21 August 2008. It was split into two disciplines, Freestyle and Greco-Roman which are further divided into different weight categories. Men competed in both disciplines whereas women only took part in the freestyle events with 18 gold medals being awarded. This was the second Olympics with women's wrestling as an event.
Larry Lee "Zeke" Jones is an American wrestler who won a silver medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, a world championship in Varna, Bulgaria, in 1991, and was the former freestyle head coach at USA Wrestling. He is currently the head coach of the Arizona State University Wrestling team as of April, 2014. He was a six-time national freestyle champion, four-time World Cup champion, Pan American Games champion, and received the "World's Most Technical Wrestler Award" awarded by FILA, the international governing body for the sport. In college, he was a three-time All-American for Arizona State University and competed on the 1988 NCAA Championship team, coached by famed Bobby Douglas. After college, he wrestled on two world championships teams with the United States wrestling team. In 2005, he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
USA Wrestling is the organization that currently governs freestyle wrestling and Greco-Roman wrestling in the United States. USA Wrestling is also the official representative to the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and to United World Wrestling (UWW) and is considered the national governing body of the sport at the amateur level. Their mission statement is, "USA Wrestling, guided by the Olympic Spirit, provides quality opportunities for its members to achieve their full human and athletic potential."
Sofia Magdalena Mattsson is a Swedish wrestler, who has won a World Championship, four European championships and an Olympic bronze medal.
Ali Bernard is a female wrestler, who competes in the women's freestyle heavyweight (72 kg) division.
Carol Huynh is a Canadian freestyle wrestler. Huynh was the first gold medallist for Canada in women's wrestling and was the first gold medallist for Canada at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She is also the 2010 Commonwealth Games and two time Pan American Games champion. Success was also achieved at the world championships where Huynh has totaled one silver and three bronze medals. Huynh is also an eleven time national champion.
Monika Ewa Michalik is a female freestyle wrestler from Poland. She participated in Women's freestyle 63 kg at 2008 Summer Olympics. In the last 16, she beat Volha Khilko from Belarus. In the quarter-finals Michalik lost to the French wrestler Lise Golliot-Legrand.
Sahit Prizreni is a freestyle wrestler from Albania who now competes for Australia. He participated in Men's freestyle 60 kg at 2008 Summer Olympics. He was eliminated in 1/8 of final losing with Bazar Bazarguruev from Kyrgyzstan.
Michael Najeeb Zadick is an American freestyle wrestler. He participated in Men's freestyle 60 kg at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He lost in the 1/8 finals to Vasyl Fedoryshyn
William Harold "Bill" Scherr is an American former wrestler who competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics, for the United States.
Cary Joseph Kolat is an American wrestler and wrestling coach who earned two NCAA championships in 1996 and 1997 for Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania and was a member of the United States Men's Freestyle Wrestling Team from 1997–2001. During that time he won silver and bronze medals at the 1997 Krasnoyarsk and 1998 Tehran FILA Wrestling World Championships as well as competing for the United States in freestyle wrestling at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, where he placed 9th. Kolat is currently the head wrestling coach at USNA.

Anastasija Grigorjeva is a Latvian freestyle wrestler of Russian origin, who won gold at the 2010, 2013 and 2016 European Championships. She has also won two bronze medals at World Championship level and won gold at the European Games. She has competed at two Olympics.
Jesse Prudente Ruíz Flores is an American-born wrestler, who represented Mexico, and competed in the men's freestyle 120 kg at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
Marcie Van Dusen is an amateur female American freestyle wrestler, who competed for the women's 55-kg category at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She is a two-time U.S national and world team trials champion, and a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She is also a silver medalist at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Kyle Frederick Snyder is an American freestyle wrestler. He has the distinctions of being the youngest Olympic gold medalist and the youngest World Champion in American wrestling history. Snyder is also the youngest wrestler ever to win the World, NCAA, and Olympic championships in the same year — a Triple Crown of American wrestling that had not been accomplished in a generation until he completed his sweep at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Joe Williams is a retired amateur American freestyle wrestler, who competed in the men's middleweight category. He won ten U.S. national, three consecutive NCAA (1996–1998) and two Pan American Games titles, scored two bronze medals in the 74 and 76-kg division at the World Championships, and finished fifth at the 2004 Summer Olympics, considering one of the most decorated wrestling athletes in United States sporting history.
Nathan Tomasello is an American freestyle and graduated folkstyle wrestler. In freestyle, he is a National runner-up and Junior National Champion. As a folkstyle wrestler, he is a 1-time NCAA champion, 4-time NCAA All-American and 4-time Big Ten Conference champion out of Ohio State University. He is also a 4-time OHSAA champion as a high schooler.
