Leighton Owen Clarkson (born 19 October 2001) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen. [5]

Career

Clarkson made his professional debut for Liverpool on 17 December 2019, coming on as a substitute in the away match against Aston Villa in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup. [5]

On 4 February 2020, he played in the FA Cup 4th Round replay against Shrewsbury Town, winning 1–0 in the youngest-ever Liverpool side in history. [6]

On 24 July 2020, Clarkson signed a long-term contract with Liverpool. [7]

On 9 December 2020, he was named in the starting eleven for a Champions League group stage game against Danish side FC Midtjylland. [8]

On 16 August 2021, it was announced that Clarkson would join hometown club Blackburn Rovers on a season-long loan deal. [9] His loan was cut short in January 2022. [10] Scored on his Aberdeen debut in a 4-1 win over St Mirren.The 21-year-old has scored five goals and provided eight assists across all competitions this season. [11]

On 15 June 2023, Aberdeen FC announced that Clarkson would join them on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee. [12]

On 12 May 2024 he scored in the 4-0 win for Aberdeen. [13]

International career

On 6 September 2021, Clarkson made his debut for the England U20s during a 6-1 victory over Romania U20s at St. George's Park. [14]

Liverpool were on course to winning a unique quadruple, as they won a record-breaking ninth EFL Cup and the FA Cup, beating Chelsea on penalties in both finals. However, they lost the Premier League title by one point to Manchester City, and – in a repeat of the 2018 final – lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid. This was the first season since 2015–16 without Georginio Wijnaldum, who departed to Paris Saint-Germain and the first since 2017-18 without Xherdan Shaqiri, who departed to Lyon.
