Andrew Patrick Lyons (born 2 August 2000) is an Irish professional footballer who plays as a defender for EFL League One club Blackpool.

Club career

Youth career

A native of Naas, County Kildare, Lyons originally played with Dublin club St Joseph's Boys until July 2016, when he signed for League of Ireland club Bray Wanderers under-17 side, although a month later he signed for the under-17 side of Bohemians. [2] In 2017 [3] and 2018, [4] Lyons helped his club to back-to-back League of Ireland U19 Division wins, an Enda McGuill Cup win in 2018, while he also featured in the UEFA Youth League against Midtjylland in 2018 and PAOK in 2019. [5] He was named League of Ireland U19 Division Player of the Year during his time with the club's under-19 team. [6]

Bohemians

Lyons was an unused substitute in three league fixtures during the 2017 season. [7] He made his debut in senior football on 5 June 2018 in a 3–1 defeat away to Dundalk in the Leinster Senior Cup. [8] Lyons scored the first goal of his senior career on 16 September 2019 in a 2–0 win over Crumlin United in the quarter-final of the FAI Cup at Richmond Park. [9] At the end of the 2020 season, he was named in the PFAI Team of the Year by his fellow professionals. [10] He signed a new one-year contract with the club on 25 January 2021. [5]

Shamrock Rovers

Lyons signed a multi-year contract with rivals Shamrock Rovers on 24 January 2022. [11] In doing so, he moved from a part-time contract with Bohemians to a full-time contract with Rovers. [12] Lyons scored the first European goal of his career on 25 August 2022 in a 1–0 win over Hungarian side Ferencváros in a UEFA Europa League playoff round tie at Tallaght Stadium. [13] On 6 September 2022, he was named League of Ireland Player of the Month for the previous month. [14] Lyons was named the PFAI Players' Young Player of the Year for the 2022 season. [15]

Blackpool

On 29 August 2022, it was announced that Lyons would join EFL Championship club Blackpool in January 2023 on a three-and-a-half-year deal, for a fee believed to be in the region of £300,000 plus add-ons. [16] [17] [18] [19] He made his debut for the club on 7 January 2023, playing the full 90 minutes in a 4–1 win over Premier League side Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup. [20] He scored his first goal for the club on 7 February 2023 in a 2–2 draw with Huddersfield Town at Bloomfield Road. [21] In February 2024, Lyons suffered a serious knee injury, ruling him out for an extended period. [22]

International career

Lyons has represented the Republic of Ireland at every level from under-15 up to under-21 level, including representing the under-19 side in the 2019 UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Armenia. [5] He made his debut for the under-21 team in a friendly against Australia U23 on 2 June 2021. [23]

The 2019 League of Ireland Premier Division is the 35th season of the League of Ireland Premier Division. The league began in February 2019 and concluded in October 2019. Fixtures were announced in December 2018.

The 2019 season was St. Patrick's Athletic F.C.'s 90th year in existence and was the Supersaint's 68th consecutive season in the top-flight of Irish football. It was the first season Harry Kenny took charge of the club, following Liam Buckley's spell in charge for the previous seven seasons. The fixtures were announced on 19 December 2018, with the Saints facing Cork City at home on the opening day of the season for the second year in a row, with the Inchicore side set to play champions Dundalk away from home on the final night of the season. Harry Kenny left his post on 24 August following a 3–1 loss away to bottom of the table UCD in the FAI Cup. He was replaced by Stephen O'Donnell on 31 August, his first managerial role. Pats finished 5th in the league and won the Leinster Senior Cup, playing the semi-final and final with their underage sides after the league season had ended for the senior team.

Dundalk entered the 2018 season as the League Cup holders from 2017, having won that competition and finished as runners-up in both league and FAI Cup. In January the club was taken over by United States–based investors, who had identified the club's European progress as a commercial opportunity. 2018 would turn out to be Stephen Kenny's sixth and final season as manager. He resigned one month after the end of the season to accept the Republic of Ireland U-21 manager's role, and was replaced by his assistant, Vinny Perth for 2019. It was Dundalk's seventh consecutive season in the top tier of Irish football, their 80th in all, and their 89th in the League of Ireland.

The 2020 League of Ireland season was Bohemian Football Club's 130th year in their history and their 36th consecutive season in the League of Ireland Premier Division since it became the top tier of Irish football. Bohemians were due to participate in both national domestic cup competitions this season, namely the FAI Cup and the EA Sports Cup. The latter was deferred indefinitely due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Bohemians competed in the UEFA Europa League for the first time in seven years as they qualified with a third-place finish the previous season.

Shamrock Rovers were the defending champions, having won their nineteenth Premier Division title the previous season. They retained the title on 24 October as a result of Derry City drawing 0-0 away to Sligo Rovers.
