Lewis Sound ( 66°20′S67°0′W / 66.333°S 67.000°W / -66.333; -67.000 Coordinates: 66°20′S67°0′W / 66.333°S 67.000°W / -66.333; -67.000 ) is a body of water running northwest–southeast between Lavoisier Island and Krogh Island to the northeast and Watkins Island to the southwest, in the Biscoe Islands of Antarctica. It was mapped from aerial photographs taken by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition, 1956–57. In association with the names of pioneers in cold climate physiology grouped in this area, it was named "Lewis Passage" by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee (1960) after Sir Thomas Lewis, an English physiologist who investigated the responses of the blood vessels of the skin to environmental temperature. The feature was later renamed as Lewis Sound as it does not provide safe passage for a ship. [1]

Lavoisier Island

Lavoisier Island is an island 29 km (18 mi) long and 8 km (5 mi) wide, lying between Rabot and Watkins Islands in the Biscoe Islands, Antarctica. It is separated from Renaud Island and Rabot Island to the northeast by Pendleton Strait, from Watkins Island to the southwest by Lewis Sound, and from Krogh Island to the west-southwest by Vladigerov Passage.

Krogh Island

Krogh Island is an ice-covered island about 5 nautical miles (9 km) long lying close west of the southern part of Lavoisier Island in Biscoe Islands, Antarctica. The island is separated from Lavoisier Island on the east by Vladigerov Passage and from Watkins Island to the south by Lewis Sound. Its north coast is indented by Transmarisca Bay and Suregetes Cove.

Discovered and partially photographed on January 13, 1956 in the course of a transcontinental nonstop plane flight by personnel of U.S. Navy Operation Deep Freeze I from McMurdo Sound to Weddell Sea and return.

Mill Inlet is an ice-filled inlet which recedes 8 nautical miles (15 km) in a northwesterly direction and is some 20 nautical miles (37 km) wide at its entrance between Cape Robinson and Monnier Point, along the east coast of Graham Land, Antarctica. It was charted by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1947 and named for Hugh Robert Mill. It was photographed from the air during 1947 by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition under Finn Ronne.

Hanusse Bay is a broad bay, 37 kilometres (20 nmi) long in a general north-south direction, lying between the northern portions of Adelaide Island and Arrowsmith Peninsula, Antarctica. The bay was discovered and first charted by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1908–10, under Jean-Baptiste Charcot, and named by him for the director of the Hydrographic Service of the French Navy Ferdinand Isidore Hanusse (1848–1921).

Shambles Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Shambles Glacier is a steep glacier 4 miles long and 6 miles wide, with very prominent hummocks and crevasses, flowing east between Mount Bouvier and Mount Mangin into Stonehouse Bay on the east side of Adelaide Island. It is the island's largest glacier, and provides an eastern outlet from the giant Fuchs Ice Piedmont which covers the entire western two-thirds of the island. In doing so, Shambles Glacier provides the largest 'gap' in Adelaide Island's north-south running mountain chain.

Decazes Island is an island 0.8 km (0.5 mi) long, lying 2.4 km (1.5 mi) southwest of Belding Island at the southwestern extremity of the Biscoe Islands. The island is one of the largest of many small islets and rocks that fringe the northern side of Matha Strait. The vicinity was charted by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1908–10, under Jean-Baptiste Charcot, who applied the name "Pointe Decazes" to the south end of an island in this approximate position. The original application has been altered in recent years, and the name Decazes is now established in usage for the entire island described.

Finsterwalder Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Finsterwalder Glacier is a glacier on the northwest side of Hemimont Plateau, 2 nautical miles wide and 10 nautical miles long, flowing southwest from the central plateau of Graham Land, Antarctica, toward the head of Lallemand Fjord. Its mouth lies between the mouths of Haefeli Glacier and Klebelsberg Glacier, the three glaciers merging with Sharp Glacier where the latter enters the fjord. It was first surveyed from the plateau in 1946–47 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, and named by them for Sebastian Finsterwalder and his son, Richard Finsterwalder, German glaciologists.

Wilkinson Glacier

Wilkinson Glacier is a glacier on the south side of Protector Heights on Pernik Peninsula, Loubet Coast in Graham Land, flowing westward into Lallemand Fjord to the south of Holdfast Point. Mapped from air photos taken by Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (FIDASE) (1956–57). Named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Captain John V. Wilkinson, Royal Navy, captain of HMS Protector in these waters, 1955–56 and 1956-57.

Belding Island is an island 3 nautical miles (6 km) long, lying west of the south end of Watkins Island, Biscoe Islands. It was mapped from air photos taken by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (1956–57), and named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Harwood S. Belding, an American physiologist who was Director of the Quartermaster at the Climatic Research Laboratory, Department of the Army, Lawrence, Massachusetts, and initiated considerable research on cold climate clothing.

Kuno Point is the southwestern extremity of Watkins Island in the Biscoe Islands, Antarctica. It was mapped from air photos taken by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (1956–57), and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Yasau Kuno, a Japanese physiologist who has specialized in the study of human sweating and its effect as a temperature regulator.

Field Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Field Glacier is a glacier on Pernik Peninsula, Loubet Coast in Graham Land, situated south of Salmon Cove, and flowing west into Lallemand Fjord just south of Kanchov Peak. It was mapped from air photos taken by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition, 1956–57. In association with the names of glaciologists grouped in this area, it was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after William B.O. Field, an American glaciologist and surveyor, sometime Research Fellow of the American Geographical Society.

Flint Glacier is a glacier which flows south into Whirlwind Inlet between Demorest Glacier and Cape Northrop, on the east coast of Graham Land, Antarctica. It was discovered by Sir Hubert Wilkins on his flight of December 20, 1928, and photographed from the air by the United States Antarctic Service in 1940. It was charted in 1947 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, who named it for glaciologist Richard F. Flint, professor of geology at Yale University.

Gagge Point is the southern extremity of Lavoisier Island, Biscoe Islands. It was mapped from air photos obtained by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (1956–57), and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Adolph P. Gagge, an American physiologist who has specialized in the reactions of the human body to cold environments.

Mott Snowfield

Mott Snowfield is a snowfield in the northeast of Trinity Peninsula, Antarctica, between Laclavère Plateau and Antarctic Sound. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Peter G. Mott, leader of the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition, 1955–57.

Hariot Glacier is a glacier flowing northwest along the south side of Morgan Upland before turning west into the northern portion of the Wordie Ice Shelf, along the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was roughly surveyed by the British Graham Land Expedition, 1936–37, and the upper reaches were photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947. The glacier was surveyed from the ground by members of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey who travelled along it in December 1958, and it was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Thomas Hariot, an English mathematician who pioneered new methods of navigation under the patronage of Sir Walter Raleigh.

McArthur Glacier is a glacier between the Christie Peaks and Swine Hill, flowing west from Palmer Land, Antarctica, into George VI Sound. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Alistair H. McArthur, a British Antarctic Survey geophysicist at Stonington Island, 1967–68.

Sölch Glacier

Sölch Glacier is a glacier on the Pernik Peninsula of the Loubet Coast in Graham Land, flowing west to Salmon Cove just north of Kanchov Peak on the east side of Lallemand Fjord. It was mapped from air photos taken by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition, 1956–57, and named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Johann Sölch (1883–1951), an Austrian glacial geologist and glaciologist.

Levy Island is an isolated snow-covered island in Crystal Sound, Antarctica, about 7.5 nautical miles (14 km) east of Gagge Point, Lavoisier Island. It was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947–48) and surveys by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (1958–59). The island was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Henri A. Levy, an American physical chemist who, with S.W. Peterson, determined the location of the hydrogen atoms in ice by neutron diffraction, in 1957.

Lidke Ice Stream is an ice stream about 25 nautical miles (50 km) long flowing north into Stange Sound, east of Mount Benkert, on the English Coast of Palmer Land, Antarctica. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy aerial photographs, 1961–66, and was first visited by a USGS field party in January 1985. The ice stream was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after USGS geologist David J. Lidke, a member of the field party.
