"Lifeline" was released on November 27, 2023 through Gamma Records as the second single from the soundtrack album of the 2023 film The Color Purple . [1] The song is performed by american singer-songwriter Alicia Keys. [2]

Background and composition

After the announcing of The Color Purple directed by Blitz Bazawule, the second film adaptation of the 1982 novel of the same name by Alice Walker after Steven Spielberg's 1985 film, Kris Bowers was named as the composer of the score. [3] On November 27, 2023 the soundtrack's musicians and performers were revealed alongside the publication of "Lifeline" as the second single after "Keep It Movin". [4]

The song is co-written, co-produced by Alicia Keys with Marshmello, Tricky Stewart and production team TMS. [5] [6] It was described by Keys as a "heartfelt ode to the unequivocal comfort emanating from friends, family, and community that holds us up as we face life's challenging moments." [7]

Promotion and live performances

Keys performed the song at The Diary of Alicia Keys 20th anniversary concert at Webster Hall in New York City on December 1, 2023. [8] On December 11, Keys performed the song during a surprise concert at St Pancras railway station in London, United Kingdom. [9] Keys also performed the song live at the 2023 Jingle Bell Ball in London. [10]

Music video

The official music video of the song was published on December 21, 2023. [11] The video, directed by Diane Martel and executive produced by Ashley Greyson, featured scenes with Keys herself and cameo form the film. [12]

"Keep It Movin'" was released on November 11, 2023 through Gamma Records as the first promotional single from the soundtrack album of the 2023 film The Color Purple. The song is performed by the film actresses Halle Bailey and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi as the younger versions of Nettie and Celie.

The Color Purple is the 2023 film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name, which in turn was based on Alice Walker's 1982 novel. Three soundtrack albums were released for the film.

Phylicia Pearl Mpasi is an American actress and writer. She began her career by performing in the broadway production of The Lion King (2015-2020). Mpasi made her film debut as Celie Harris-Johnson in the 2023 version of The Color Purple, being recognized with a NAACP Image Awards for her performance and being nominated with the cast at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Critics' Choice Movie Awards.
