Limbe is a neighborhood located in the city of Blantyre, in Malawi. It is the operational headquarters and workshop for Malawi Railways.

Overview

Limbe is 11 kilometres (7 miles) east of center of Blantyre and was founded in 1909. Blantyre merged with Limbe in 1956. [1]

Economy

The first branch of the Commercial Bank of Malawi was opened in Limbe on 11 April 1970. [2] Limbe is home to Malawi Pharmacies Limited [3] and Illovo Sugar Malawi. Limbe is the site to many of the industries in Blantyre District. Limbe is known for Indian (East Asian) traders but there has also been an influx of Chinese owned businesses growing in the area. [4]

Culture

Limbe has a strong Asian Malawian culture and Yao culture. The town is home to a transport museum. [5]

Sports

Limbe is also the headquarter of Hockey Association of Malawi (HAM).

Blantyre is a district in the Southern Region of Malawi. The capital is Blantyre, a commercial city where most Malawian industrial and business offices are. The district covers an area of 2,012 km² and has a population of 809,397. It was named after Blantyre, the birth village of David Livingstone in Scotland, one of the first missionary explorers who came to Nyasaland, as Malawi was called before independence in 1964. It is also a main trading point besides the other large cities in Malawi. The other large cities are Lilongwe, which is located in the central region, and Mzuzu, which is in the northern part of Malawi.

The University of Malawi (UNIMA) is a public university established in 1965 and until 4 May 2021, when the university underwent a delinking, was composed of four constituent colleges located in Zomba, Blantyre, and Lilongwe. Of the four colleges, the largest is Chancellor College in Zomba. It is part of the Malawian government educational system. The last Vice-Chancellor was Professor John Kalenga Saka. UNIMA celebrated its golden jubilee from the 24 to the 26 September 2015.

The Shire Highlands Railway Company Ltd was a private railway company in colonial Nyasaland, incorporated in 1895 with the intention of constructing a railway from Blantyre to the effective head of navigation of the Shire River. After problems with routing and finance, a South African 3 ft 6 in gauge railway was constructed between 1903 and 1907, and extended in 1908 to a Nsanje, a distance of 113 miles (182 km) as water levels in the Shire River fell.
