Geography

Linden is bordered by the Withlacoochee State Forest to the south, Tarrytown to the west, Webster and Center Hill to the north, and Mabel to the east.

The Withlacoochee State Forest is 157,479-acre (637 km²) in the western central part in the U.S. state of Florida, near Lecanto, Inverness, Floral City, Brooksville, Ridge Manor, and Dade City.

Tarrytown is an unincorporated community in central Sumter County, Florida, United States. The ZIP Code for this community is 33597, which is shared by Webster, four miles to the north.

Center Hill is a city in Sumter County, Florida, United States. The population was 909 at the 2000 census. According to the U.S Census estimates of 2006, the city had a population of 996. The current mayor is Jim Walts.

Transportation and Economy

The main road through Linden is State Road 50. The abandoned Orange Belt Railway line spanning from Trilby in Pasco County to Sylvan Lake in Seminole County runs parallel to SR 50 throughout the community. Pavement markings approaching this line still exist on County Road 772.

State Road 50 runs across the center of the U.S. state of Florida through Orlando, with its termini at SR 55 at Weeki Wachee and SR 5 in Titusville.

The Orange Belt Railway was a 3 ft narrow gauge railroad established in 1885 by Russian exile Peter Demens in Florida. It was one of the longest narrow gauge railroads in the United States at the time of its completion in 1888, with a mainline 152 miles (245 km) in length between Sanford, Florida and St. Petersburg, Florida. It carried citrus, vegetables, and passengers; and it interchanged with two standard gauge lines: the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railway at Lake Monroe, Florida and the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad at Lacoochee, Florida.

Trilby is a census-designated place (CDP) in the northeast corner of Pasco County, Florida, United States. The population was 419 at the 2010 census.

The primary industry within Linden is farming. The only other businesses include a single store operating from a former gas station, an aggregate mine close to Mabel, three churches, and a cemetery dating back to 1842.

History

Linden has a very rich history, dating back to the mid-19th century. Linden was all owned by a family of farmers named Morgan. It went on that way for twenty years until John Morgan sold a large portion of land to unknown buyers. Over 230 acres (0.93 km²) are still owned by the Morgans. It is the largest land ownership in Linden. Four original Morgans live on the 230 acres (0.93 km²) that make up that homestead.
