Line 4 of the Athens Metro is a future line that will run from Alsos Veikou to Goudi. Construction of the line started in mid to late-2021 and is scheduled to be completed in 2030. [2] [4]
Line 4 had been under consideration for many years. Its exact route was changed multiple times. One of the most famous routes was the U-shaped line from Perissos to Katechaki (which are current stations of lines 1 and 3 respectively), including a branch to Vyronas. However, the route from Alsos Veikou to Goudi was chosen, as it has the benefit of being the one passing from the densely populated areas of central Athens, such as Galatsi, Exarheia, Kolonaki, Kaisariani and Zografou. [5]
In the distant future, it will be extended further north to Lykovrysi and to other important suburbs of Athens, like Marousi.
Plans for Line 4 of the Athens originated from the Metro Development Study for the period between 1996 and 2000, which proposed branch lines for Lines 2 and 3. The Line 2 branch would have run between Panepistimio and Alsos Veikou, with intermediate stations at Exarcheia, Alexandras, Dikastiria, Kypseli, and Galatsi. The Line 3 branch would have run between Panormou and Marousi, with intermediate stations at Faros, Filothei, Sidera, OAKA (Athens Olympic Sports Complex), and Paradissos (for Suburban Railway trains at Kifisias). [6]
On 1 December 2005, Georgios Souflias, then the Minister of the Environment, Urban Planning and Public Works, announced that the two branches would combine to form the U-shaped Line 4. Souflias stated that the original branches, if built, would have caused "significant structural and operational weaknesses" for Lines 2 and 3. [7] The original proposal for Line 4 is similar to what is currently proposed between Alsos Veikou and Marousi (without the Line 5 branch), but it did not include stations at Elikonos, Panepistimioupoli, and OTE. [7] [8]
There has been significant opposition to a metro station at Exarcheia Square, in a neighborhood known for its radical political and intellectual activism. [9] Some local residents have even gone to protest against the building of a metro station at Exarcheia Square, as they claim that the square has historic value to the community. Locals claim that the "station is part of gentrification scheme aimed at altering historically leftwing [and anarchist] area". 16 people were detained as a result of these protests. [10] [11] Regardless of the protests, construction of the metro station has resumed since the protests ended.
In March 2017, Elliniko Metro (the infrastructure manager of the Athens Metro) split the implementation of Line 4 into five phases, of which Phase A is now under construction: proposals for Phases 3, 4 and 5 first appeared in the Souflias plan in April 2009. [12] [13]
If Elliniko Metro builds all sections as planned, the line will be about 38.2 km (23.7 mi) long, with 35 stations: [3] However, the expected length of the completed project may change due to the ongoing review of the alignment of Phases 3, 4 and 5.
Phase 2 may consist of a 9.6 km (6.0 mi) line from Goudi to Line 1 at Marousi, [3] with intermediate stations at Katechaki (for Line 3), Faros, Filothei, Sidera, Olympic Stadium, Paradissos (for Suburban Railway trains at Kifisias), and OTE. [14]

Phase 3, as of November 2021 [update] , may consist of a branch from Evangelismos to the new Government Park near Dafni, [15] with intermediate stations at Pangrati and Vyronas: Elliniko Metro previously planned to build the terminus at Ano Ilioupoli. [3] [16]
The extension may form part of Line 5, with trains initially terminating at Akadimia. Elliniko Metro also announced the possibility of a further southern extension from Dafni towards Kalamaki. [15] A western extension of Line 5 from Akadimia to Koumoundourou Square was also briefly considered in 2014: the alignment of the first phase of Line 4 allows for the construction of such extension. [16] However, the September 2022 Athens Metro Development Plan reroutes Line 4 via Pefkakia instead of Perissos, resulting in the relocation of the station for Nea Filadelfeia. [14]

Elikonos | Ελικώνος | Galatsi | 2030 | Elikonos was a late addition to the first stage of Line 4: the residents of the area petitioned Elliniko Metro to add a second station in Kypseli, because of the long distance between Galatsi and Kypseli. Elliniko Metro struggled to find an appropriate location for the extra station because they feared that the elevation of the platforms would be around 50 metres (160 feet) deep. [34] In 16 December 2017, [35] Elliniko Metro agreed to build Elikonos: according to the April 2018 technical drawing, the station will still be one of the deepest on the Metro, at around 35 metres (115 feet). The Athens Metro is a rapid transit system serving the Athens urban area in Greece. Line 1 opened as a single-track conventional steam railway in 1869 and was electrified in 1904. Beginning in 1991, Elliniko Metro S.A. constructed and extended Lines 2 and 3. It has significantly changed Athens by providing a much-needed solution to the city's traffic and air pollution problem, as well as revitalising many of the areas it serves. Extensions of existing lines are under development or tender, like the Line 2 extension to Ilion where tender started in 2023, as well as a new Line 4, whose central section began construction in October 2021. The Athens Metro is actively connected with the other means of public transport, such as buses, trolleys, the Athens Tram and the Athens Suburban Railway. The Athens Metro is hailed for its modernity, and many of its stations feature works of art, exhibitions and displays of the archaeological remains found during its construction. Photography and video-taking is permitted across the whole network and street photographers often work in Athens Metro. This was the only metro system in Greece, before the Thessaloniki Metro began operations on 30th November 2024.
The Thessaloniki Metro is an underground rapid-transit system in Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest city. The system consists of a single line with 13 stations; a further 5 stations are under construction for Line 2. It is fully automated and driverless, the first system of its kind in Greece, and is operated by Thessaloniki Metro Automatic (THEMA), a Franco-Italian consortium.
Marousi, also known as Maroussi, is an Athens Metro station in Marousi, a northern suburb in Athens. The station is served by Line 1, and is 23.46 kilometres down the line from the southern terminus of Piraeus, between Nerantziotissa to the south and KAT to the north.
Elliniko Metro, formerly Attiko Metro until May 2023, is a Greek State-owned company who is responsible for the development and construction of the Athens Metro and the Thessaloniki Metro, as well as the Athens Tram.
Agios Dimitrios–Alexandros Panagoulis, commonly known as Agios Dimitrios, and also known as Aghios Dimitrios on signage, is a station on line 2 of the Athens Metro. It served as the line's terminus from 5 June 2004, when it was inaugurated, until the extension to Elliniko opened on 26 July 2013. The station took its name from the municipality of Agios Dimitrios (Brahami), which is the area it serves, also the station has the name of Alexandros Panagoulis, a fighter against the dictatorial regime of 1967-1974 and later Member of Parliament, who was killed in a car crash at the point where the station is situated on 1 May 1976. The station is located beneath the Vouliagmenis Avenue. It is entirely underground and has a central island style platform, at the ends of which are the stairways, escalators & lifts up to the concourse level from which there are 4 exits to street level. The station is attached to Athens Metro Mall, one of Athens' major shopping centers.
Line 2 of the Athens Metro runs entirely underground from Anthoupoli in the northwest to Elliniko in the south, via Syntagma. It first opened, between Sepolia and Syntagma, on 28 January 2000, with Line 3.
Line 3 of the Athens Metro is a rapid transit line that runs from Dimotiko Theatro in the west to Doukissis Plakentias or Athens Airport in the east, via Syntagma. Most Line 3 trains start or terminate at Doukissis Plakentias: a through service to the Airport leaves once every 36 minutes, and shares most of the extended route with the Athens Suburban Railway. It runs for 47.3 kilometres (29.4 mi), making it the system's longest line.
Panepistimio is a station on Athens Metro Line 2. It opened on 28 January 2000, and is adjacent to the National Library of Greece, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Academy of Athens. "Panepistimio" means "university" in Greek.
The Athens Suburban Railway, officially the Athens Suburban and Regional Railway, is a commuter rail service that connects the city of Athens and its metropolitan area with other places in Attica, Boeotia, Corinthia and the city of Chalcis in Euboea.
Line 2 of the Thessaloniki Metro, also known as the Kalamaria Extension, is a deep-level underground rapid transit line in Thessaloniki, Greece, connecting New Railway Station in the west with Mikra in the south-east. The section of the line between New Railway Station and 25 Martiou stations was set to open in 2023, with the rest of the line becoming operational in 2024. This was delayed to opening in 2025, after inauguration of Line 1 the prior year. Of the line's 16 stations, 11 are also stops for Thessaloniki Metro's Line 1, as they will share tunnels.
New Railway Station metro station, abbreviated on signage as Neos Sid. Stathmos, is a metro station at the Thessaloniki railway station, serving Thessaloniki Metro's Line 1 and Line 2. It serves as the western terminus of both lines and entered service in 2024. Construction of this station has been held back by major archaeological finds, and it is designated as a mid-importance archaeological site by Attiko Metro, the company overseeing its construction.
Nea Elvetia is a metro station serving Thessaloniki Metro's Line 1. It serves as the eastern terminus of the line and entered service in 2024. The Pylaia depot lies east of Nea Elvetia station.
Dimokratias is a metro station serving Thessaloniki Metro's Line 1 and Line 2. It entered service in 2024. Construction of this station has been held back by major archaeological finds, and it is designated as a high-importance archaeological site by Attiko Metro, the company overseeing its construction. At this station, an ancient and early Christian cemetery & church were found, as well as Ottoman inns and warehouses. The station was initially located further west, but was moved eastward so that it falls outside of the medieval Walls of Thessaloniki, thus reducing the chance of major archaeological works.
Panepistimio is a metro station serving Thessaloniki Metro's Line 1 and Line 2. The station is named after the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the adjacent University of Macedonia; it also serves the University of Macedonia. Construction of the station was delayed by major archaeological finds, and it is designated as a mid-importance archaeological site by Attiko Metro, the company overseeing its construction. It entered service in 2024.
Venizelou is a metro station serving Thessaloniki Metro's Line 1 and Line 2. The station is named after Eleftherios Venizelos, Liberal Prime Minister of Greece. It entered service in 2024. Construction of this station has been held back by major archaeological finds, and it is designated as a high-importance archaeological site by Attiko Metro, the company overseeing its construction. At this station, Roman Thessaloniki's marble-clad and column-lined Decumanus Maximus, along with shops and houses, was found running along the route of the Via Egnatia at 5.4 metres (18 ft) below ground level. The design of the station interiors was kept a secret until a day before its opening, and it was revealed in a ceremony attended by both Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and President Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

The station is named after the Ioannis Papafis, a Thessaloniki-born merchant, entrepreneur, and national benefactor of Greece. The station is built within the grounds of the Papafio Orphanage, a male-only orphanage financed by Papafis and operated by the Metropolis of Thessaloniki. Construction of this station was held back by conflicts between the Metropolis and Attiko Metro, the company overseeing its construction. The Metropolis challenged the company's right to the compulsory purchase of 907 square metres (9,760 sq ft) of the orphanage's garden grounds, resulting in a legal battle which reached Greece's Council of State. It entered service in 2024.
Fleming is a metro station serving Thessaloniki Metro's Line 1 and Line 2. The station is named after the Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming. During construction, a Roman cemetery and a small settlement were found, and it is designated as a low-importance archaeological site by Attiko Metro, the company overseeing its construction.
