The Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka is a member of the Cabinet in the Government of Karnataka. Not technically a constitutional office, [1] it seldom carries any specific powers. A deputy Chief minister usually also holds a key cabinet portfolio such as home minister or finance minister. In the parliamentary system of government, According to the Constitution of India, the Governor is Karnataka's de jure head, but de facto executive authority rests with its Chief Minister; [2] [3] the position of Deputy Chief Minister is used to bring political stability and strength within a coalition government or in times of Hung Parliament, when a proper chain of command is necessary [4]

The Government of Karnataka is a democratically elected body with the governor as the constitutional head. The governor who is appointed for five years appoints the chief minister and on the advice of the chief minister appoints his council of ministers. Even though the governor remains the ceremonial head of the state, the day-to-day running of the government is taken care of by the chief minister and his council of ministers in whom a great amount of legislative powers are vested.

Minister of Finance (India) Indian minister

The Minister of Finance is the head of the Ministry of Finance of the Government of India. One of the senior-most offices in the Union Cabinet, the finance minister is responsible for the fiscal policy of the government. As part of this, a key duty of the Finance Minister is to present the annual Union Budget in Parliament, which details the government's plan for taxation and spending in the coming financial year. Through the Budget, the finance minister also outlines the allocations to different ministries and departments. The first Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka was S. M. Krishna, [5] in M. Veerappa Moily's cabinet in 1992. The office has since been only intermittently occupied. The former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is the Longest serving Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, who held the Post on Two Occasions. Once during the Chief Minister-ship of J. H. Patel and another time when Dharam Singh was the Chief Minister. R. Ashoka and Eshwarappa were last Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, who took on the role when Jagadish Shettar was the Chief Minister. [6]

S. M. Krishna Indian politician

Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna is an Indian politician who served as Minister of External Affairs of India from 2009 to October 2012. He was the 16th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004 and the 19th Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008. SM Krishna had served as the Speaker of the Karnataka Vidhan Sabha from December 1989 to January 1993. He was also a member of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha at various times from 1971 to 2014.

Siddaramaiah 22nd Chief Minister of Karnataka state in South India

Siddaramaiah is an Indian politician and was the 22nd Chief Minister of Karnataka from 2013 to 2018. He is a member of Congress Working Committee. Currently a leader of the Indian National Congress party, Siddaramaiah was a member of various Janata Parivar factions for several years. Earlier, as a Janata Dal (Secular) leader, he was Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka on two occasions. On 13 May 2013 he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka.

Jayadevappa Halappa Patel was the 15th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 31 May 1996 to 7 October 1999.

Many times there arose a proposal to make this post permanent, but nothing happened.

So far, Karnataka has witnessed 8 Deputy Chief Ministers in 9 Terms; meanwhile, Siddaramaiah held the position twice.

Devaragunda Venkappa Sadananda Gowda is an Indian politician serving as the Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers in the Government of India in the Second Modi Ministry representing the Bangalore North constituency. He had also served as the 20th Chief Minister of Karnataka.

Krishna Byre Gowda is the current Minister of Rural Development, Law and Parliamentary Affairs in the cabinet of H D Kumaraswamy,and Member of Legislative Assembly of the Byatarayanapura Constituency, in office since June 2008. Born in Bangalore, Krishna is a graduate from the American University in Washington and Christ College in Bangalore. He was a project associate at the Ethiopian Embassy in Washington before earning his M.A. degree. He then worked as an agriculturalist at his family-owned farm in Kolar district between 2000 and 2002. In 2003, he again worked as a project associate at Development Alternatives, Inc. He has served three times as an M.L.A. of Karnataka state, twice from Vemegal in Kolar district from 2003 to 2007, and from 2008 to 2013 from the Byatarayanapura Constituency in Bengaluru.

Matada Patil Prakash, was an Indian politician. He served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka during 2005-2006. A highly respected leader known for his simplicity and integrity, Prakash was also a theatre enthusiast. He directed and acted in Kannada plays. He died on February 9, 2011 in Bangalore at the age of 71.

The 1999 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election took place in October 1999 in 224 constituencies in Karnataka, India. The elections were conducted to elect the government in the state of Karnataka for the next five years. The Indian National Congress secured a huge majority winning 132 seats. The National Democratic Alliance composed of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (United) faction was a distant second winning only 63 seats. The Janata Dal (Secular) faction of former prime minister Deve Gowda also bit dust winning only 10 seats. The election was held simultaneously with the Lok sabha elections. The Janata Dal government collapsed in mid-1999 owing to a split in the Janata Dal. The Chief minister J.H.Patel and many other prominent leaders joined the Janata dal (United) faction and along with Ramakrishna Hegde allied with the Bharatiya Janata Party where as the former prime minister Deve gowda and his associates including the deputy chief minister Siddaramaiah joined the Janata dal (secular) faction. Owing to the anti incumbency against both the factions of JD, the Congress won handsomely. S.M. Krishna of the Congress was sworn in as Chief minister on 11 October 1999.

G. Parameshwara Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka &  Former President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee

Parameshwara Gangadharaiah better known by name Dr. G. Parameshwara, is an Indian politician served as the 8th Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka. He is the first Dalit leader to hold the Deputy Chief Minister post in Karnataka and also the longest-served President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee for two consecutive terms.

H. S. Mahadeva Prasad Karnataka politician

Halahalli Shreekantha Shetti Mahadeva Prasad was an Indian politician from the state of Karnataka and five-time Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Gundlupet constituency of the Chamarajanagar district. He first won the Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections in 1994 while representing Janata Dal. He was re-elected in five straight subsequent elections in 1999, 2004, 2008 and 2013. Throughout his political career he had been member of Janata Dal, Janata Dal (United), Janata Dal (Secular) and the Indian National Congress. At the time of his death in January 2017, he was the incumbent state minister for Cooperation and Sugar in the Government of Karnataka led by Siddaramaiah as Chief Minister.

The Siddaramaiah cabinet was the Council of Ministers in Karnataka, a state in South India headed by Siddaramaiah that was formed after the 2013 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections.

Chief Minister of Coorg

The Chief Minister of Coorg was the chief executive of the south Indian state of Coorg State. As per the Constitution of India, Chief Commissioner was a state's de jure head for a Part-C state like Coorg, but de facto executive authority rests with the chief minister. Following elections to the Coorg Legislative Assembly, the President of India invited the party with a majority of seats Indian National Congress to form the Government of Coorg. Then appointed the chief minister, whose council of ministers were collectively responsible to the assembly. Given that he had the confidence of the assembly, the chief minister's term is for five years and is subject to no term limits.

Tumkur Ramaiya Satishchandran was a Padma Bhushan winning 1952 batch Indian Administrative Service officer of Karnataka cadre, who served as the Governor of Goa and also served as the 7th Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of India, the Chief Secretary of Karnataka and Power Secretary of India.
