New Zealand Knights Football Club was a New Zealand professional football club based in Auckland. The club was formed in 2004, and played their first competitive match in July 2005 when they participated in the 2005 A-League Pre-Season Challenge Cup. The club played its home matches at North Harbour Stadium. The Knights was dissolved in 2007, following two seasons of football.

Club captains

Two players held the position of captain of the New Zealand Knights between 2005 and 2007. The first club captain was Danny Hay, who led the side in 2005. [49] The longest-serving captain was Darren Bazeley, who was captain from 2005 to 2007 after taking over from Hay. [50]

New Zealand Knights Football Club were the only professional association football club in New Zealand before they became defunct. Based in Auckland, New Zealand, they played in the A-League, Australia's premier football competition and have since been replaced by the Wellington Phoenix.

The 2005–06 A-League was the 29th season of top-flight soccer in Australia, and the inaugural season of the A-League. After over 12 months without a national professional club competition since the close of the 2003–04 National Soccer League season, the first match in the A-League was played on 26 August 2005. The competition was made up of a triple round robin league stage before a championship playoff featuring the top four teams.

Daniel John Hay is a retired New Zealand professional footballer who is currently the manager of the New Zealand national football team, New Zealand U-23, and New Zealand U-20. Hay played as a central defender for Premier League club Leeds United and National Soccer League side, Perth Glory. He also captained Waitakere United in the New Zealand Football Championship.

Noah Hickey is a New Zealand former footballer who last played for Gisborne City in the Central Premier League and last played professionally for the New Zealand Knights in the Hyundai A-League. He plays as either a striker or a right-winger and was an established member of the New Zealand national team, the 'All Whites'.

Darren Shaun Bazeley is an English-New Zealand football coach and former player. He played as either a right full back or right-sided midfielder. He is currently Caretaker head coach of the New Zealand team and head coach of the national U-23 and Olympic sides.

The 2006–07 A-League was the 30th season of top-flight soccer in Australia, and the second season of the A-League since its establishment the previous season. Football Federation Australia hoped to build on the success of the first season and on the interest generated by the Socceroos competing in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Fox Sports had signed a A$120 million deal over 7 years for the exclusive broadcast rights of the A-League, AFC Champions League, and national team matches.

The 2005–06 New Zealand Knights FC season was the club's inaugural season in the Australian A-League. Picking up just one win and three draws out of the 21 regular season matches, the Knights finished at the bottom of the table, 20 points behind 7th placed Melbourne Victory.

The F3 Derby is an association football rivalry between Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets. It is the longest standing derby in the A-League Men. The rivalry originated due to the team's relative geographical proximity, with the Mariners located on the Central Coast of New South Wales, the Jets in Newcastle, immediately to the north. The two clubs were also the only two clubs from outside capital cities in the inaugural A-League seasons, which contributed to the rivalry.

The 2015–16 A-League was the 39th season of top-flight soccer in Australia, and the 11th since the establishment of the A-League in 2004. Melbourne Victory were both the defending A-League Premiers and Champions. The regular season schedule was released on 29 June 2015. The season commenced on 8 October 2015 and concluded on 10 April 2016. The finals series commenced on 15 April 2016 and concluded with the 2016 Grand Final, held on 1 May 2016.
