Norwich City Football Club is an English professional football club based in Norwich, Norfolk. As of the 2021–22 season, the team competes in the Premier League, the top tier of English football, after winning the 2020–21 EFL Championship title. They will compete in the EFL Championship in the 2022–23 season following their relegation. The club was founded in 1902. The history of Norwich City F.C. stretches back to 1902. After a brief period in amateur football, Norwich City F.C. spent 15 years as a semi-professional team in the Southern League before admission to English Football League in 1920. For most of the next 50 years, Norwich City F.C. played in Division Three (South), then the joint lowest tier of the football league, a period that was distinguished by "a thrilling giant-killing sequence which took them to the FA Cup semi-finals" in 1959. Shortly afterwards, the club won its first major trophy, the 1962 League Cup. Norwich finally reached the pinnacle of the league structure in 1972, with their first promotion to the top tier.

The 1988–89 FA Cup third-round match between Sutton United and Coventry City was an association football game played at Gander Green Lane in Sutton, on 7 January 1989. Coventry City entered the FA Cup in the third round, as they participated in the Football League First Division, the top tier of English league football. Sutton United of the Conference, the fifth tier of English football, had started their cup run in the 4th Qualifying round, winning three ties to reach this stage of the competition. Coventry, the away team, went into the match as strong favourites, a reflection of the gulf in divisions that separated the two teams.
The 2013–14 season was the 112th season of football for Norwich City. It was Norwich City's third campaign in the Premier League since achieving promotion during the 2010–11 season and was their 24th season in the top flight of English football. Norwich spent most of the season in the bottom half of the Premier League table, but only in two short periods, in September and October, were they actually in the relegation zone and this is where they slipped back to in the final few matches of the season. They finished the season in eighteenth place in the Premier League and were subsequently relegated to the Championship. Norwich lost in a replay to Fulham in the third round of the FA Cup and to Manchester United in the fourth round of the League Cup. It was a season that saw the sacking of manager Chris Hughton and the appointment of former Norwich player Neil Adams as his replacement with five games left to play.
The 2014–15 season was Norwich City Football Club's 113th season as a professional club. It was their first season back in the Football League Championship after their relegation from the Premier League in the 2013–14 season. Neil Adams began the season as manager, to embark on a first full season in charge, however this was not to be as he was replaced by Alex Neil in January 2015. Norwich started the League Cup in the second round and exited in the third round following a defeat at League Two side Shrewsbury Town, and were also eliminated in the FA Cup Third Round, following a defeat by Preston North End. Norwich finished third in the regular Championship season, qualifying for the play-offs. They were promoted back to the Premier League after a single season's absence by defeating Middlesbrough 2–0 in the play-off final.
