Australian rules football in Queensland was the first official football code played in 1866. The Colony of Queensland was the second after Victoria to adopt Australian rules football, just days after there rules were widely published. For two decades it was the most popular football code, however a strong desire for representative football success saw Queenslanders favour British football variants for more than a century. 120 years later in 1986 Queensland was the first state awarded a licence to have a club, the Brisbane Bears, in the national competition, also its first privately owned club. However the Gold Coast based Bears had a detrimental effect until the 1993 redevelopment of the Brisbane Cricket Ground (Gabba). In contrast the Bears transformation into a Brisbane and traditional membership based club resulted in enormous growth, and a tripling of average AFL attendances by 1996.

Greg Veivers is an Australian former rugby league footballer who captained Australia in a Rugby League World Cup match in 1977. He represented Australia in seven World Cup matches from 1975 and 1977. He was a front-rower and a regular Queensland state representative from 1970 to 1978.

John Alexius Bathersby was an Australian bishop of the Roman Catholic Church. He was the sixth archbishop of the Archdiocese of Brisbane, serving from 1991 until his retirement in 2011. Bathersby was conferred with the title Emeritus Archbishop of Brisbane.

Hugh Denis Macrossan was a politician and judge in Queensland, a State of Australia. He was elected as a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly, and was later to become a judge and also the Chief Justice of Queensland. He was the son of a prominent Queensland politician, and he was elected as a member of parliament. He served as a judge from 1926, until his appointment as chief justice in 1940 and his death later that year. He was the shortest serving chief justice in Queensland history, serving only one month, and was one of only two chief justices to have a brother and nephew served as chief justice.

John Murtagh Macrossan was a distinguished barrister, chancellor and judge in Queensland, Australia. He was the 16th Chief Justice of Queensland and the third person from the Macrossan family to occupy that position. His grandfather John Murtagh Macrossan was Colonial Secretary for Queensland and his two uncles Hugh Denis Macrossan and Neal William Macrossan were also Chief Justice of Queensland.

Michael Desmond Veivers was the Member for Southport from 1987 to 2001 and was Minister for Emergency Services and Sport in the Borbidge Government. He had previously been a Rugby League international.

Dr. John Clement "Clem" Windsor was a rugby union player who represented Australia and a surgeon.
