Breweries in Maine produce a wide range of beers in different styles that are marketed locally, regionally, and nationally. Brewing companies vary widely in the volume and variety of beer produced, from small nanobreweries to microbreweries to massive multinational conglomerate macrobreweries.
In 2012, Maine's 43 brewing establishments (including breweries, brewpubs, importers, and company-owned packagers and wholesalers) employed 390 people directly, and more than 5,000 others in related jobs such as wholesaling and retailing. [1] Altogether 47 people in Maine had active brewer permits in 2012. [2] Including people directly employed in brewing, as well as those who supply Maine's breweries with everything from ingredients to machinery, the total business and personal tax revenue generated by Maine's breweries and related industries was more than $142 million. [3] Consumer purchases of Maine's brewery products generated more than $49 million in additional tax revenue. [4] In 2016, according to the Brewers Association, Maine ranked 5th in the number of craft breweries per capita (7.6 Breweries per capita) with 77 breweries. [5]
For context, at the end of 2016, there were 5,301 breweries in the United States, including 5,234 craft breweries subdivided into 1,916 brewpubs, 3,132 microbreweries and 186 regional craft breweries. [6] In that same year, according to the Beer Institute, the brewing industry employed around 65,000 Americans in brewing and distribution and had a combined economic impact of more than $350 billion. During the past several years the number of craft breweries in Maine has increased. According to the most recent information from the Brewers Association, which is an advocate for the Craft Brew industry, Maine now has over 90 breweries of various sizes across the state. [8]
Craft beer is a beer that has been made by craft breweries, which typically produce smaller amounts of beer, than larger "macro" breweries, and are often independently owned. Such breweries are generally perceived and marketed as emphasising enthusiasm, new flavours, and varied brewing techniques.
The U.S. state of Oregon is home to more than 200 breweries and brew pubs that produce a large variety of beer.

Goose Island Beer Company is a brewery in Chicago. The oldest currently-operating brewing company in Illinois, it began as a brewpub that opened in 1988 in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, and was named after a nearby island. A larger production brewery opened in 1995. A second brewpub, in Wrigleyville, opened in 1999 and closed in 2015.
Geary Brewing Company is a Craft Brewery currently located in Portland, Maine, USA. It was incorporated in October 1983 by David and Karen Geary. As of March 2017, Geary Brewing Company is now owned and operated by Robin and Alan Lapoint of Freeport, Maine.

Craft beer tourism refers to tourism where the primary motivation of travel is to visit a brewery, beer festival, beer related activity or other event that allows attendees to experience all aspects of the craft beer-making, consuming and purchasing process. Travel and tourism constitute one of the largest industries in the world, with Americans spending a total of $1.1 trillion in domestic and international travel in 2018. The beer tourism industry has evolved from the larger culinary and beverage tourism category in which people began planning travels based around experiencing food and drink of different geographies. Informally, vacations centric to the theme of enjoying beer have been dubbed "beercations".
