Its name derives from a Lenape word, applied by European-American settlers of Western New York State to a trail that followed the Allegheny River; they also named the county after this.

New York State Route 17 (NY 17) is a major state highway that extends for 397 miles (638.91 km) through the Southern Tier and Downstate regions of New York in the United States. It begins at the Pennsylvania state line in Mina and follows the Southern Tier Expressway east through Corning to Binghamton and the Quickway from Binghamton east to Woodbury, where it turns south to follow the Orange Turnpike to the New Jersey state line near Suffern, where it connects to New Jersey Route 17. From the Pennsylvania border to the village of Waverly and from Binghamton to Windsor, NY 17 is concurrent with Interstate 86 (I-86). Eventually, the entire east–west portion of NY 17 from the Pennsylvania border to Woodbury will become I-86 as projects to upgrade the route to Interstate Highway standards are completed.

The New York State Thruway is a system of controlled-access toll roads spanning 569.83 miles (917.05 km) within the U.S. state of New York. It is operated by the New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA), a New York State public-benefit corporation. The 496.00-mile (798.23 km) mainline is a freeway that extends from the New York City line at Yonkers to the Pennsylvania state line at Ripley by way of I-87 and I-90 through Albany, Syracuse, and Buffalo. According to the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association, the Thruway is the fifth-busiest toll road in the United States. The toll road is also a major route for long distance travelers linking the cities of Toronto and Buffalo with Boston and New York City.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Interstate 86 (Pennsylvania–New York)</span> Highway in the United States

Interstate 86 (I-86) is an Interstate Highway that extends for 223.39 miles (359.51 km) through northwestern Pennsylvania and the Southern Tier region of New York, in the United States. The highway has two segments: the longer of the two begins at an interchange with I-90 east of Erie, Pennsylvania, and ends just beyond the Chemung-Tioga county line at the Pennsylvania border, while the second extends from I-81 east of Binghamton to New York State Route 79 (NY 79) in Windsor. When projects to upgrade the existing NY 17 to Interstate Highway standards are completed, I-86 will extend from I-90 near Erie to the New York State Thruway (I-87) in Woodbury. The portion in Erie County, Pennsylvania, is known as the Hopkins-Bowser Highway and is signed as such at each end. In New York, the current and future alignment of I-86 is known as the Southern Tier Expressway west of I-81 in Binghamton and the Quickway east of I-81.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Interstate 95 in New York</span> Highway in New York

Interstate 95 (I-95) is part of the Interstate Highway System and runs from Miami, Florida, to the Canada–United States border near Houlton, Maine. In the US state of New York, I-95 extends 23.50 miles (37.82 km) from the George Washington Bridge in New York City to the Connecticut state line at Port Chester. The George Washington Bridge carries I-95 across the Hudson River from New Jersey into New York City. There, I-95 runs across Upper Manhattan on the Trans-Manhattan Expressway for 0.81 miles (1.30 km) through Washington Heights. It continues east across the Harlem River on the Alexander Hamilton Bridge and onto the Cross Bronx Expressway. In the Bronx, I-95 leaves the Cross Bronx at the Bruckner Interchange, joining the Bruckner Expressway to its end. North of the interchange with Pelham Parkway, it then continues northeast via the New England Thruway out of New York City into Westchester County and to the Connecticut state line, where I-95 continues on the Connecticut Turnpike.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">New York State Route 19</span> North–south state highway in New York state

New York State Route 19 (NY 19) is a north–south state highway in Western New York in the United States. It is the longest state highway in that region, and the only other one besides NY 14 to completely transect the state from the Pennsylvania state line to the shore of Lake Ontario. It continues south into Pennsylvania as Pennsylvania Route 449 (PA 449) and ends at an intersection with the Lake Ontario State Parkway just south of the lakeshore in Hamlin. NY 19 does not serve any major cities or metropolitan areas and remains a two-lane rural road for almost its entire length. However, it follows the Genesee River for much of its lower length, and offers easy access to the gorges of Letchworth State Park midway along its route.

New York State Route 244 (NY 244) is an east–west state highway in Allegany County, New York, in the United States. It runs for 15.80 miles (25.43 km) from an intersection with NY 19 in the village of Belmont to a junction with NY 21 in the town of Alfred. The highway is located about 3 miles (4.8 km) south of the Southern Tier Expressway, which loosely parallels NY 244 between Belmont and Alfred. NY 244 was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">New York State Route 248</span> State highway in New York, US

New York State Route 248 (NY 248) is a 31.43-mile-long (50.58 km) state highway in a remote part of the Southern Tier region of New York in the United States. The route, located close to the Pennsylvania state line, passes through Allegany and Steuben counties. In the former, it runs mostly east–west from its junction with NY 19 in Stannards; but in the latter turns northwards to its north end at NY 36 in Canisteo. NY 248 used to be signed north–south in Steuben County, however, those designation were replaced by new east–west signage around 2013.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">New York State Route 280</span> State highway in Cattaraugus County, New York, US

New York State Route 280 (NY 280) is an 11.59-mile (18.65 km) long north–south state highway in rural Cattaraugus County, New York, in the United States. The southern terminus of the route is at the Pennsylvania state line in South Valley, where it becomes Pennsylvania Route 346 (PA 346). The northern terminus is at exit 18 on the Southern Tier Expressway in Coldspring, west of Salamanca. NY 280 follows both the eastern edge of the Allegheny Reservoir and the western boundary of Allegany State Park for its entire length.

New York State Route 417 (NY 417) is an east–west state highway located in the Southern Tier of New York in the United States. It begins at exit 20 of the Southern Tier Expressway in the city of Salamanca and ends at a junction with NY 415 in Painted Post, west of the city of Corning. At 105.25 miles (169.38 km) in length, NY 417 is the longest of the state highways that were formerly part of NY 17 before the construction of the Southern Tier Expressway. It also diverges the most from the current NY 17, coming within 100 feet (30 m) of the Pennsylvania state line at one intersection.

New York State Route 17F (NY 17F) was a 49.11-mile-long (79.03 km) state highway located in the Southern Tier of New York in the United States. The western terminus of the route was at then-NY 17 in Andover, Allegany County. The eastern terminus was at NY 17 in Addison, Steuben County. NY 17F was an alternate to NY 17 between the two locations, branching north to serve Almond, Hornell, and Canisteo.

New York State Route 101 (NY 101) is a 3.58-mile (5.76 km) long state highway in northwestern Nassau County, New York, in the United States. It runs north–south as Port Washington Boulevard from NY 25A in Flower Hill, west of Roslyn and east of Manhasset, to Astor Lane in Sands Point. It becomes County Route 101 (CR 101) south along Searingtown Road to Shelter Rock Road (CR 8) and becomes Middle Neck Road north of Astor Lane, continuing north and west to a dead end at the Long Island Sound as the unsigned County Route D55 (CR D55).

New York State Route 276 (NY 276) is a state highway located entirely within Clinton County, New York, United States. It connects the town of Champlain to the village of Rouses Point, with both termini situated at intersections with U.S. Route 11 (US 11), approximately 5 miles (8 km) apart. The middle third of the route runs along the southern edge of the Canadian border and connects to Quebec Route 221 by way of the Overton Corners–Lacolle 221 Border Crossing, midway between the villages of Champlain and Rouses Point. In Rouses Point, NY 276 is known as Church Street and Pratt Street. All of NY 276 was originally designated as part of NY 348 before gaining its current designation c. 1963.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Interstate 81 in New York</span> Highway in New York

Interstate 81 (I-81) is a part of the Interstate Highway System that runs from I-40 at Dandridge, Tennessee, to the Thousand Islands Bridge at Wellesley Island in New York, beyond which the short 2.7-mile (4.3 km) Ontario Highway 137 (Highway 137) links it to Highway 401. In the US state of New York, I-81 extends 183.60 miles (295.48 km) from the Pennsylvania state line southeast of Binghamton to the Canadian border at Wellesley Island northwest of Alexandria Bay. The freeway runs north–south through Central New York, serving the cities of Binghamton, Syracuse, and Watertown. It passes through the Thousand Islands in its final miles and crosses two bridges, both part of the series of bridges known as the Thousand Islands Bridge.

Interstate 84 (I-84) in the U.S. state of Idaho is a major Interstate Highway that traverses the state from the Oregon state line in the northwest to Utah state line in the southeast. It primarily follows the Snake River across a plain that includes the cities of Boise, Mountain Home, and Twin Falls. The highway is one of the busiest in Idaho and is designated as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">New York State Route 382</span> Former highway in New York

New York State Route 382 (NY 382) was a state highway in the town of Red House in Cattaraugus County, New York, in the United States. The highway was 0.8 miles (1.3 km) long and served as a connector between NY 17 and the Red House entrance of Allegany State Park, where it connected to Allegany State Park Route 2. NY 382 was assigned in the early 1930s and removed in the early 1970s after the highway's connection to the park was dismantled, and the hamlet it served evacuated, as part of the Southern Tier Expressway's construction. The NY 382 designation is currently reserved by the New York State Department of Transportation as a replacement for NY 88 in Ontario and Wayne counties.
