The Mayor of Srinagar is the first citizen of the Indian city of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir. He is the chief of the 74-member Srinagar Municipal Corporation. He is elected through a popular vote in a quinquennial election. Seat is vaccant since 5 November 2023
On 6 November 2018, Junaid Azim Mattu became the mayor of Srinagar, after getting 07 corporator votes, as a candidate of Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference. [1] On 16 June 2020, he was removed from the position after losing a no-confidence motion. [2] In November 2020, Junaid Azim Mattu was once again elected as Mayor of Srinagar after six months after he was ousted from the office through a no-confidence motion. He joined Altaf Bukhari led Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party. [3] [4] [5]
There is also a Deputy Mayor of Srinagar post in Srinagar Municipal Corporation. Current Deputy Mayor of Srinagar is Parvaiz Ahmad Qadri [6] [7]
The elections are held in all 74 wards in the city to elect corporators. The party that wins the maximum number of seats holds an internal vote to decide on the mayor. [8]
The mayor of Srinagar holds a status equal to a minister of state as of 20 August 2019. [9]
Mehbooba Mufti Sayed is an Indian politician and leader of the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party (PDP), who served as the 9th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 4 April 2016 to 19 June 2018. She was the first female chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir. After the revocation of Article 370 of the constitution in August 2019, Mufti was detained without any charges at first and later under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act.

The Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is a state political party in Jammu and Kashmir, India. The PDP was headed and founded by Mufti Mohammed Sayeed. His daughter, Mehbooba Mufti, succeeded him as party leader and as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir following his death in January 2016. The party is a member of the People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration electoral alliance. The party is also a member of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance since its founding on 18 June 2023.

Ganderbal is a town and a municipality committee in Ganderbal District in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It is the headquarters of Ganderbal district. It is in Central Kashmir; it has an average elevation of 1,619 metres. Kulgam, known as Kolgom in Kashmiri, is a town, an administrative division and capital of the Kulgam district in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It is located at a distance of 67 km (42 mi) from the summer state capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar. Sher-e-Kashmir Stadium is a cricket stadium located in the Sonwar Bagh neighbourhood of Srinagar in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It is home to the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association and the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team which represents the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir in the Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments in the country. National Cricket Academy is currently constructing an indoor complex at the stadium.
Shah Faesal is an Indian bureaucrat currently posted as Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Culture (India) In 2010, he became the first Kashmiri to top the Indian Civil Services Examination. He tendered his resignation from the Indian bureaucracy in protest on 9 January 2019, citing "unabated killings" in Kashmir among other things, which, reportedly, was "never accepted" by the central government and he even withdrew the same later.
Elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are conducted in accordance with the Constitution of India to elect the representatives of various bodies at national, state and district levels including the 114 seat unicameral Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and the Parliament of India. The first elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir took place between 28 November and 19 December 2020 in the form of by-elections to District Development Councils and municipal and panchayat level bodies. A fresh delimitation process for assembly constituencies began in February–March 2020.
Parvez Ahmad Nengroo is a Kashmiri politician who was born in 1964 at Kaprin, a village in South Kashmir's Shopian district. Parvez Ahmad was chairman and CEO of Jammu and Kashmir Bank. He was removed by the state government on the charges of "mis-governance". He is the second chairman and CEO of J&K Bank, after Haseeb A Drabu, to be suddenly removed by the J&K state government. On 23 September 2021, Nengroo joined the Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference
Popular sports in Jammu and Kashmir include cricket, football and winter sports along with sports like golf, water sports, Ice stock sport and adventure sports. The National Winter Games have been held in Gulmarg in 1996, 2004 and 2009. The first Khelo India Winter Games were held in February and March 2020 in Leh and Gulmarg. Jammu and Kashmir won the most gold medals while the Indian Army team came second with 8 gold medals. The second edition of the winter games were also held successfully in Gulmarg in 2020 with Jammu and Kashmir coming first and Karnataka second.

Mohammad Ashraf Khan, chiefly known as Ashraf Sehrai or just as Sehrai, was a Kashmiri separatist leader and chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, a Kashmiri separatist political party. He was elected chairman through a first-ever election conducted in the history of Hurriyat when Syed Ali Shah Geelani relinquished office due to his deteriorating health.
Junaid Azim Mattu is an Indian politician from Jammu and Kashmir. He was Mayor of Srinagar till November 2023.
The 2019–2021 Jammu and Kashmir lockdown was a preventive security lockdown and communications blackout that had been imposed throughout the Indian-administered union territory of Jammu and Kashmir following the revocation of Article 370 which lasted until February 2021, with the goal of preemptively curbing unrest, violence and protests. Most separatist leaders had and have been detained in the crackdown. The Indian government had stated that the tough lockdown measures and substantially increased deployment of security forces had been aimed at curbing terrorism. The government did not want a repeat of the death and injuries seen during the 2016–2017 Kashmir unrest.

A District Development Council is a form of elected local government in Jammu and Kashmir facilitated by the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989 and created under Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Rule, 1996 of the constitution of India. They are primarily aimed at electing the members from the rural and urban areas for the District Planning Committee and the councils themselves with fourteen members from each district for speedy development and economic upliftment.
Mohammad Ashraf Mir is an Indian politician from Jammu and Kashmir. He is an MLA from Sonawar Assembly constituency in Srinagar district. He won the 2014 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election representing the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party.
