Since 1840, South Holland has ceded five municipalities to the province of Utrecht: Oudewater in 1970, Woerden in 1989, Vianen in 2002, Leerdam and Zederik in 2019.

South Holland is a province of the Netherlands with a population of over 3.7 million as of October 2021 and a population density of about 1,373/km2 (3,560/sq mi), making it the country's most populous province and one of the world's most densely populated areas. Situated on the North Sea in the west of the Netherlands, South Holland covers an area of 3,307 km2 (1,277 sq mi), of which 607 km2 (234 sq mi) is water. It borders North Holland to the north, Utrecht and Gelderland to the east, and North Brabant and Zeeland to the south. The provincial capital is the Dutch seat of government The Hague, while its largest city is Rotterdam. The Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta drains through South Holland into the North Sea. Europe's busiest seaport, the Port of Rotterdam, is located in South Holland.
Vianen is a city and a former municipality in the central Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht. It is located south of the Lek River. Before 2002 it was part of the province of South Holland. Vianen is made up of a historic town centre that dates back to the medieval period and was once surrounded by a defensive wall and moat, as well as more extensive modern housing developments to the east, south and southwest and an industrial and commercial area. Vianen is intersected by two major motorways leading to Utrecht: the A2 (Amsterdam-Maastricht) and the A27 (Breda-Almere). Both roads can be notoriously congested near Vianen during peak commute hours. The municipality was merged with the municipalities of Leerdam and Zederik on 1 January 2019. The name of the new municipality is Vijfheerenlanden which is a part of the province Utrecht.
Bodegraven is a town and former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The former municipality covers an area of 38.50 km2 (14.86 sq mi) of which 1.02 km2 (0.39 sq mi) is water.
Leerdam is a city and former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht. The municipality was merged with the municipalities of Vianen and Zederik on 1 January 2019. The name of the new municipality is Vijfheerenlanden which is a part of the province Utrecht. The former municipality Leerdam was a part of the province South Holland.
Leidschendam-Voorburg is a municipality in the western Netherlands, located in the province of South Holland. It had a population of 76,433 in 2021, and covers an area of 35.62 km2 (13.75 sq mi) of which 3.07 km2 (1.19 sq mi) is water.
Pijnacker-Nootdorp is a municipality in the Randstad conurbation in the Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The municipality covers an area of 38.62 km2 (14.91 sq mi) of which 1.54 km2 (0.59 sq mi) is water.
Reeuwijk is a former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The former municipality covers an area of 50.11 km2. Since January 1, 2011 Reeuwijk merged with Bodegraven to Bodegraven-Reeuwijk.
Zederik is a former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The municipality covered an area of 76.50 km2 (29.54 sq mi) of which 2.77 km2 (1.07 sq mi) is water. It had a population of data missing in 2021.
HTM Personenvervoer NV is a public transport company in the Netherlands operating trams, lightrail and buses in The Hague, Rijswijk, Leidschendam, Voorburg, Delft, Zoetermeer, Wateringen, Pijnacker and Nootdorp, the so-called Conurbation Haaglanden. The lightrail connection to Zoetermeer is operated in cooperation with RET, the Rotterdam-public transport company, which operates the connection between The Hague Central Station and Slinge in the south of Rotterdam, thus giving a fast and easy connection between the two city-centres. Regional transports are serviced by Connexxion, Arriva and RET.
Nootdorp is a small town in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is bordered by Zoetermeer to the north, by The Hague to the west, by Delfgauw to the south and by Pijnacker to the east. Nootdorp was a separate municipality until 2002, when it merged with Pijnacker to form Pijnacker-Nootdorp, which is a part of Greater The Hague.
Tienhoven is a village in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is a part of the municipality of Vijfheerenlanden, and lies about 10 km southwest of IJsselstein.
De Meije or Bodegraafse Meije is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland and has a second part, de Zegveldse or Stichtse Meije in the province of Utrecht. The first is a part of the former municipality of Bodegraven, and lies about 7 km northwest of Woerden. Bodegraven has made part of the new municipality of Bodegraven-Reeuwijk since 2011. The second is part of the municipality of Woerden. A third part, across the little river De Meije, belongs to the municipality Nieuwkoop.
Vijfheerenlanden, literally "lands of five Lords", is a municipality in the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands. The municipality was created on 1 January 2019 through the merger of the former municipalities of Vianen (Utrecht), Leerdam and Zederik. Vijfheerenlanden has 59,150 inhabitants on 1 January 2022.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rotterdam is a Latin diocese of the Catholic Church in South Holland province of the Netherlands. The diocese is a suffragan in the ecclesiastical province of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Utrecht. Since 2011, the bishop has been Hans van den Hende.
Zuid-Holland West is an official region of the province of South Holland in the Netherlands.
Haaglanden was a conurbation surrounding The Hague in the Netherlands from 1992 until 2015. The city's position as the country's seat of government made the region prominent in the Netherlands. Located on the west coast of the province of South Holland, the region had a population of 1,050,543 in September 2013, and covered an area of 405 km².
Bodegraven-Reeuwijk is a municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland with a population of 35,278 in 2021. It was established by a merger of Bodegraven and Reeuwijk on 1 January 2011. The municipality covers 88.64 km2 (34.22 sq mi) of which 13.26 km2 (5.12 sq mi) is water.
