Yalova Province Province of Turkey in East Marmara

Yalova Province is a province in northwestern Turkey, on the eastern coast of the Sea of Marmara. Its adjacent provinces are Bursa to the south and Kocaeli to the east. The provincial capital is the city of Yalova. The population of the Yalova Province was 203,741 in 2010. Prior to 1930, the area around Yalova constituted a district of Kocaeli Province; from 1930 to 1995, it was made part of Istanbul Province; in 1995, the area was separated and made into the current Yalova Province.

Yalova

Kadıköy is a belde (town) in the central district of Yalova Province, Turkey. At 40°37′N29°14′E it is 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) south west of Yalova and at the midpoint of Armutlu Peninsula. The population of Kadıköy is 5414 as of 2010. The settlement was founded by an Ottoman kadı ("judge"). Hence it was named as Kadıköy. During Ottoman Empire most of the population was composed of Greeks. But according to Population exchange between Greece and Turkey agreement the Greek population was replaced by Turkish population from Greece. Refugees from Caucasus after the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878) were also settled in the village. The village was declared a seat of township in 1991. Intensive farming such as green house farming and floriculture is the main economic activity of the town.

It is 8 kilometers from central Armutlu and 63 kilometers from the capital of the Yalova Province. The main sources of income for the village, which lies on the coast of the Sea of Marmara, are olive tree cultivation and fishing. Located in Fıstıklı are a village health clinic and an elementary school.

Koru is a belde (town) in Çınarcık district of Yalova Province, Turkey. Situated at 40°39′N29°10′E it is between Çınarcık to west and Yalova to east, all coastal places on the Anatolian side of Marmara Sea. Distance to ÇInarcık is 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) and to Yalova is 9 kilometres (5.6 mi). The population of Koru is 5257. as of 2010. Up to 20th century the population was composed of Greeks. The name of the settlement was Kuri. After the Population exchange between Greece and Turkey agreement, the former population of the settlement was replaced by the Turks from Serres and Drama in 1924. Former name was changed to a Turkish name with a similar sound and meaning small forest quite suitable for Koru. In 1992, the settlement was declared a seat of township. In 1999 the town suffered from the Great earthquake. Now the town is flourisahing as a center of floricıulture. Many agricultural crops are also produced.

Armutlu Peninsula is a peninsula extending westward into Marmara Sea in the Anatolian section of Turkey. In addition to Yalova Province, parts of Kocaeli Province and Bursa Province are on the peninsula.

Kaytazdere Town in Yalova Province, Turkey

Kaytazdere is a small belde (town) in Altınova district of Yalova Province, Turkey. At 40°41′N29°32′E it is almost merged to Altınova. Distance to Yalova is 25 kilometres (16 mi). The population of Kaytazdereis is 5278 as of 2010. The settlement was founded at the end of the second Balkan War by Turkish refugees from Bulgaria. After the second World War an airbase was established around Kaytazdere. The economy of the town depends on small industries and agriculture.

The ferry dock is only 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) to Tavşanlı and the picnik places around the town can easily by reached in daily tours from İstanbul. Taşköprü is a coastal town in Çiftlikköy district of Yalova Province, Turkey. Taşköprü is situated on a peninsula at 40°41′N29°24′E. It is 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) from Çiftlikköy on the Turkish state highway . The population of Taşköprü is 3237 as of 2011. Taşköprü was founded by a group of Turkish families from Bulgaria in 1902. The name of the settlement refers to a 400-year-old Ottoman bridge at the east of the town.

1894 Istanbul earthquake Fatal earthquake in Turkey

The 1894 Istanbul earthquake occurred in the Çınarcık basin or Gulf of Izmit in the Sea of Marmara on 10 July at 12:24pm. The earthquake had an estimated Ms magnitude of 7.0. At least an estimated 1,349 people were killed in towns around the Gulf of Izmit such as Yalova, Sapanca and Adapazarı, and in the nearby city of Istanbul. The main shock caused a tsunami 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) high.
