In 2021, it had a population of 294,800. The borough is third-most populous of Greater Manchester.
Stockport was a rural district in the administrative county of Cheshire from 1894 to 1904. The district was the successor to the Stockport Rural Sanitary District formed in 1875.
Stockport County Borough was created by the Municipal Corporations Act 1835 when the existing Borough of Stockport was reformed as a municipal borough. Until 1835 the town was governed by a charter dating from circa 1220 granted by Ranulph de Blondeville, 4th Earl of Chester.
