These films typically feature action, adventure, fantasy, and/or science fiction elements. The first film of a particular character often focuses on the hero's origin story—the story of how they got their special powers. The first film frequently introduces the hero's nemesis.

The events of the film take place during the fifth season of the series. It is the most recent feature film to date from Warner Bros. Animation to be released theatrically outside of Warner Animation Group, and was the second time Warner Bros. Animation released a theatrical feature film based on a popular television series, after 1993's Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, in addition to being one of the very rare times a theatrically released animated feature film was done entirely with Flash animation, as well as the first wide theatrical release based on a show airing on Cartoon Network since 2002's The Powerpuff Girls Movie.
