T. G. Vinayakumar, professionally credited as Vinayan, is an Indian film director, screenwriter, producer, and lyricist, who works predominantly in Malayalam cinema and occasionally in Tamil cinema. He has directed 40 Malayalam films, 4 Tamil films and 1 Telugu film.[ citation needed ]

Career

Vinayan started his career with the film Super Star. [2] And he has directed the following films like Vasanthiyum Lakshmiyum Pinne Njaanum , Akasha ganga 2,Karumadikkuttan , Oomappenninu Uriyadappayyan , Dada Sahib , Vellinakshatram , [3] Aakasha Ganga , Rakshasa Rajavu , Kalyana Sougandhikam , Kasi (Tamil), Enn mana vaanil, Independence, Sathyam, Albhuthadweep, Athishayan, Dracula and Sipayi Lahala. The genres of his films include comedy, horror, action, fantasy and family drama. [4]

Vinayan also introduced a handful of actors and singers in the Malayalam film industry. Jayasurya, Indrajith Sukumaran, Anoop Menon, Honey Rose, Priyamani, Manikkuttan, Suresh Krishna, Meghana Raj, Lakshmi Menon, Sithara(singer), Sudeep kumar(singer)etc. are some of the actors and singers Vinayan has introduced in Malayalam.

In 2005, Vinayan wrote and directed the film Albhuthadweep (Wonder Island) which cast around 300 dwarfs for the first time in a film. The two-foot-high hero of the film, Ajayan, was written in the Guinness Book of Records and Vinayan himself was listed in India's Limca Book of Records. The film garnered the FilmFare and the Cinema Express awards, and was successfully remade in 2007 in the Tamil language by Vinayan himself. [5]

Vinayan has also remade a few of his films into Tamil. He is also a script writer and lyricist. He directed a Malayalam television serial Iniyonnu Visramikkatte before making movies. [6]

Vinayan is the founder/president of the MACTA Federation. He has also launched a co-operative society (with the assistance of the Government of Kerala) for the benefit of film workers. [7] Vinayan is also the Advisory Member of the Cine Workers Welfare Board, sponsored by the Government of India. [8]

Albhutha Dweep is a 2005 Indian Malayalam-language fantasy survival film written and directed by Vinayan. The plot is set on an uncontacted island where men are dwarfs and women are of normal height, where four Indian Navy men gets stranded. The film stars Guinness Pakru and Prithviraj Sukumaran with Mallika Kapoor, Jagathy Sreekumar, Jagadish, Indrans, Kalpana, Ponnamma Babu and Bindu Panicker in supporting roles.

<i>Traffic</i> (2011 film) 2011 Indian film by Rajesh Pillai

Traffic is a 2011 Indian Malayalam-language road-thriller film written by Bobby-Sanjay and directed by Rajesh Pillai. The film features an ensemble cast of Sreenivasan, Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Sandhya, Rahman, Anoop Menon, Remya Nambeesan and Roma. The film has its narrative in a hyperlink format. The film was released on 7 January 2011, to a positive reviews and since has been given a cult status. A multi-narrative thriller that intertwines multiple stories around one particular incident, Traffic is inspired from an actual event that happened in Chennai. Owing to its critical and commercial success, Traffic was remade into Tamil as Chennaiyil Oru Naal, in Kannada as Crazy Star and is also remade in Hindi, with the same name. This was also the last film of the veteran actor Jose Prakash.

Aakasha Ganga 2 is 2019 Indian Malayalam-language supernatural horror comedy film written and directed by Vinayan. It is a sequel to his 1999 film Aakasha Ganga. The film stars Ramya Krishna, Veena Nair, Vishnu Vinay, and Sreenath Bhasi in the lead roles. Its soundtrack and score are by Bijibal and cinematography by Prakash Kutty. The film was produced by Vinayan under the banner of Akash Films. In the film, years later, when Arathi, daughter of Maya (Daisy) and Unni, accepts the challenge of exposing an ashram, which claims to help its followers communicate with the dead, she gets haunted by an evil spirit of Ganga that once tormented her family.
